The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

It’s been my strategy since early April - not as successful as yours, as being retired we don’t have as much contact. However anyone I see - neighbours in the reserve, dental assistants, people at playgroup and bop tots - just everyone.

Amusingly in June Mr FM went to Queanbeyan to order a gate to be made and the woman assisting him, asked if he had been vaccinated - there are lots of grass roots people pushing ....
And don’t forget your good work on AFF - you can claim a big part in converting me.

Actually looking at these stats and how little they have moved in the last month I think there is an outside chance of us making the top 10 to 80%.

Don't forget, that's entire population. I think 80% 16+ is equivalent to ~56% total population for us. UK is pretty much at 80% now.

Big move could stop Covid spread

Widely vaccinating children and teenagers could be a key to stopping the spread of Covid, according to one expert.

An exclusive report in The Australian today reveals University of Melbourne modelling suggests vaccinating three million young people could halve the spread of Covid once state borders open back up.

The research, led by epidemiologist Tony Blakely, estimates that "vaccinating children from the age of five and up would halve the infection rate that Australia is likely to see once interstate borders are opened."

At present, only those aged 16 and over are eligible to be vaccinated.

“I think the adult vaccination is going extremely well and I don’t see why, if we really wanted to, we couldn’t double vaccinate all school kids by Christmas,” Professor Blakely told the Australian.

“We might even be able to get a single shot into all primary school kids as well.”

The report comes as Australia today recorded its highest Covid case numbers since the pandemic began.

Quelle surprise but you missed the broader point

No you are claiming people are waiting for Pfizer, but there is available supply, so if they arent taking those appointments then obviously there is a different reason.

More like ~64%

The 56% figure would imply under 16s comprise 30% of our population which is incorrect.

I would like to think so but what all these countries show is that after early great take up they inevitably reach a point where take up slows down, probably mainly due to vaccine hesitancy. Why do we think we are so different?

Well at least in Vic ignoring the special categories it is only the 40-59 year olds who can get Pfizer.

So there are plenty of people in 16- 39 and 60 plus age groups who are waiting for Pfizer still.

The supply has only recently increased in the last few days with another tranche of Pfizer actually arriving. They do not allow bookings until they know they have the stock. More stock just arrived which is why they were today promoting that more slots were now available. Two days ago the slots were much less.

Supply is very constrained which is why the minimum age is 40 in Vic still.

It’s 75% of those 16 years and over isn’t it ?
Only vulnerable 12-16 year olds are being vaccinated right now and the roll out in the Uk was extended to 16/17 at the beginning of August.

Not sure and that is part of the problem, the main stream media publish stats that suit whichever angle they wish to push. My assumption is that this is 18 and above but I am not certain.

edit - just checked the UK Govt site and these stats are for 16+

Herald Sun website - “Construction jab blitz as longer, harsher lockdown looms” - “Thousands of construction workers are set to get vaccinated at their worksite, while the state government weighs up whether to extend the lockdown and impose even tougher measures on Victorians.”

I guess the VIC government could consider requiring construction workers to be vaccinated similar to SYD as a way to keep that industry going under tightened restrictions.

I think it will come very soon, if not from government, then from industry. Checking the vaccine very will be like checking the white card.

I'm curious why the construction industry is so much more exalted than other industries to deserve such special treatment. Is it a bigger version of tradies parking wherever they like with disregard to pedestrians and others?

We are all still waiting to hear from VA2 and Rexy…

Top CEOs prepare to follow Qantas, SPC on no jab, no job

Optus and outsourcing platform Airtasker are among the major companies putting workers on notice that they will soon follow the lead of Qantas and SPC in enforcing strict no jab, no job policies to protect staff, their business and customers from COVID-19.

It comes as the West Australian government diverted thousands of vaccines to the Pilbara to increase vaccination rates among Rio Tinto’s fly-in, fly-out mine workers and Indigenous communities in the region from September.

Optus boss Kelly Bayer Rosmarin said mandatory inoculation was “sensible for certain roles to protect our teams and our customers”, which mirrors the stance of rival Telstra chief Andy Penn.

Great to see individual businesses doing their thing. It will be interesting to see if the federal APS moves to make any decisions on this, as that will be a catalyst for many more to follow, I am certain.

We are not allowed to manadate vaccine apart from our frontline workers in and out of healthcare which was mandated…(sigh)

We are giving people 1 free day of annual leave if they do (this is not to be used as sick leave if they have a reaction - that is sick leave!)

They can use this annual leave day for a long weekend whenever they like).

We also donate $100 to a charity of their cause and they get a little present from us to show their coworkers they have done the right thing - think very visual celebration.

Has been very successful. I hope everyone on here who is senior / influential in their jobs is asking their management to do something!
