The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

So basically taking a leaf out of the strategy of the NSW adverts which have been highlighting freedoms and a return to normal as the reason to vaccinate for over a month now.
The trouble is that whilst NSW has been talking about real freedoms, the best Vic can come up with is minuscule polishing of the lockdown. There’s no carrot there.

VIC first doses have overtaken TAS. VIC now has over 2/3 (66.82%) with a first dose. TAS is just under 2/3 with 66.64% for 16+.

NSW at 78.76% is at least a few days away from passing 80%.

Around 80,000 short of 80%, so yes should get this with tomorrow's jabs, with the numbers released on Wednesday afternoon.

Week day first jabs have been just over 40K even at their lowest.

Gladys also confirmed today that a new category for reporting will be added to report vax rates for the 12-15 year-olds who do not form part of the 80% criteria for opening up. Have seen multiple friends confirm their 13 and 14 year olds were booked in for appointments within minutes of the bookings opening this morning.

We’ve been taking bookings in NSW for age group for a while now… do you mean in the mass hubs?

VIC had a record Sunday vaccination day which is great. Hopefully all the new hubs and clinics opening up in the N and NW surge will see even more records fall.

Has Tassie really slowed down?

Yep, as hubs are the preferred channel for most in inner Sydney. Whilst some GPs have been taking appointments for teens earlier, you haven't been able to book at hub until today and pharmacies dont have any Pfizer and are yet to receive their Moderna so that not a option yet.

The friends that booked hubs today (first dose locked in before end of the month) have given up on GP channel after not being able to get appointments for themselves there, and being very satisfied with the hub experience.

WRT reporting, none of it (federal or state) has included 12-15s to date, even though we know high risk teens have been being jabbed since July - they will now need to disclose this.

Tassie is way ahead of VIC on 2nd doses. I haven't looked into the trends from previous days, but I would suspect it is more VIC speeding up rather than Tassie slowing down. Edit: Sky News is saying that the first dose number in TAS is slowing as they get out to the regions.

I understand some VCE students doing year 12 subjects were vaccinated on Sunday in VIC which probably helped the first dose numbers. There's a real drive on to give every student doing a year 12 subject the opportunity to have at least one dose before sitting exams.

If you look at the jurisdictional breakdown 1.9% of 16-19 year olds in VIC had their first dose yesterday and 0.1% had their second. So 2% of 16-19 year olds in VIC had a vaccine yesterday.

Oops:

Misreporting leads to big cut in Indigenous vaccination rates in Victoria

Almost half the people who had been counted in Victoria’s Indigenous vaccination rate were incorrectly identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
A number of regional GPs unwittingly incorrectly identified that many people who had received a COVID-19 jab were Indigenous.
The federal government released data last week that stated 48,000 First Nations Victorians had received at least one dose, and 31,000 were fully vaccinated.
That number has been revised down to 21,559 and 12,200, respectively.

Put me out of my misery. A Union rep in the Building industry says some are reluctant to get vaccinated because they don't trust the Governments to open up at 80% 🤦‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️

I think maybe in October or November they will have to at least consider offering some incentives. They really should leave no stone unturned to speed things up if demand doesn’t keep pace with supply.

Incentives for the tardy disadvantage the majority who did the right thing and got vaccinated in a timely fashion.

Privilege of being protected and able to dine out, attend entertainment venues, cross state boarders, take flights and generally be part of society should be incentive enough. There has been enough stalling, the Atates/Territories need to publish and start rolling these priviliges out now.

Then its time to add the stick:

1. Confirm publically that the unvaccinated will not be able to dine out, shop in person (click & collect / delivery only ), go to movies/theatre/museums or fly until global pandemic is over.

2. Add an extra 2% medicare surcharge (or loss of health card if you dont pay tax) for anyone 16+ who isnt fully vaccinated by end of November and doesnt have a genuine medical reason not to be (and no conscientious objection or religious beliefs are not a valid reasons).

3. Give legal protections to private business to deny employment and service to the unvacinated and non-government schools authority to deny enrollment to unvaccinated kids 12+ etc from term 1 next year.

Of all of the reasons presented to date to be vaccine hesitant, this is one at least plausible based on past performance of our government(s).

In NSW vaccination is key to construction workers being allowed to return to site, and things will start opening up more widely for the vacicnated from 70%, it just opens more so at 80%

Plus incentives like a lottery could be open to everyone who has had both jabs not just those who get it in the month or two before the lottery.

Sweden dropping most restrictionsat 79% vaccinated 16+.

For everything Sweden copped, I believe history will show they took the right approach. Unlike so many others, the Swedes didn’t lose nearly two years of their lives. Hard to put a price on that.

So daily vaccinations must be just about to greatly increase. Possibly did today, and if so we will know when the numbers are announced tomorrow.

Frewen and Hunt:
Well, good afternoon, everybody. This is fantastic news about the additional million Moderna that we are about to receive from Europe. This is in addition to what we were anticipating in the rollout, and this now means that we will have more than 11 million doses of mRNA available in September, and this will be followed by 12 million doses in October and then 12 million doses in November. This means many additional appointments.
Though note that there may be some lag from becoming available to actually getting into an arm. We also know that a lot more GPs and Pharmacists will be added over the next 4 weeks.

Plus there are still first and second dose AZ occurring at present, and second doses at least will seem some AZ for another month or two. So that is in addition to the numbers above. But I will ignore those AZ number for this exercise.

Pfizer and Moderna:

  • So far in September 22,802,573 - 20,028,084 = 2.8 million doses or 230K per day (Some will have been AZ though).
  • 16 days to go. So roughly 8+ million doses to go or 500K per day.
  • 12 million in Oct would be roughly 390K per day.

So speculating we will quite possibly not average that 500K per day for rest of Sept as there are many more GP's and Pharmacists still coming on board over the next 4 weeks, though some of these additional GPs/Pharmacists are meant to be vaccinating as of this week. But each week should ramp up on the previous week.

If so, October will probably be more that 390K per day as it soaks up the overs from September. All assuming that enough people present in a timely manner.

And joining the over 16s there are now 1.2 million 12 to 15 year olds now eligible to be vaccinated.
JOHN FREWEN:
Thanks, Minister. So you've heard today by the middle of October, we have enough vaccine to fully vaccinate all the eligible population. So we have the vaccines. I'll say again, it's now just about people turning up. We have just opened up to the 12 to 15 year olds. That's 1.2 million additional people. So we just want to bed that in for the next week or two.
The over 60s are the last piece of the puzzle, but I will acknowledge that our over 70s now are at 90 per cent first dose and 70 per cent fully vaccinated, and our over 60s are also up in that same sort of close to 90 per cent first dose as well.
So I mean, there is very, very good coverage in that age group already, but we will be looking at that as the next priority to open up. But right now we're just keen to get the 12 to 15 year olds through.
