The Operational Upgrade Thread

Got an op-up from Y+ to J on BA15, BKK to LHR. I was surprised and delighted at this, totally unexpected.

I was going to start a thread asking if Qantas Frequent Flyers had any experience of OP-UPs on BA flights too.

Mind you I have to say that BA J is looking a little tired.

Sep 2 by chance? I was on that flight but got no such luck..

On 15 September 2010, I was booked LHR to SYD via HKG on QF30, QF88, business class, classic frequent flyer award flight. This was to be my first time on international business class. I received one of the biggest surprises of my life when I was upgraded to First at the LHR departure gate for the leg to HKG. My status is only Qantas Club bronze.

I have never heard of anyone being upgraded from an award flight.

Congrats on the upgrade.

I claimed a classic rewards ticket for my mum from MEL-HGK in J a few years ago. She was upgraded to F even as a Bronze only QFF. I was shocked and happy for her so it does happen once in a blue moon.

hey congrats :) :p reminds me of two colleagues with no 'status' at all (altho one had QC), BOTH upgraded Y to J to LAX on MEL-ORD flight a few years ago! good for them :)

This raises a qn i've been meaning to ask, tho, for ur experiences, what's more likely to get the op up?

No/low status with YY or Y+, or WP with discounted (even deeply discounted!) Y?

There is no rhyme or reason as to who gets it. It's all luck, most of the time.

August 9 2010, checked in for QF302 - BKK-SYD, and was extremely surprised to be upgraded to World Traveller Plus.

Got to the Gate and asked to wait before being told I was now upgraded to Club World!

Was a nice change to actually get some sleep on that route - kudos to BA, smooth journey and even arrived early!

Out of my last 2 trips to the US since July this yearI have been upgraded to Premium Economy 3 out of 4 international Flights.
Flying again tomorrow. Hope I get bumped up again, first time on the A380...

Which routes/flights were these on? I'm doing well on QF73/74, but I've got a QF93/94 run in a few weeks and am crossing everything for a bump up out of a Y seat. Even a Y+ seat would be good (747 unfortunately).

QF107 X2 and QF 74 X 1 were Op upgrades. I think it may have been because they were 747's so not many prem economy guests were travelling? not too sure if luck would hold out on the A380. It's great service from Qantas though.:)

I do not believe this is true in general.

The far majority of such op-ups are based on a passengers perceived value to Qantas.

Search this forum for the term "Proactive Onload" or see these threads:

QF1 on Friday 1/10. Booked in J, and was paged in the SYD Flounge about 40 minutes before the flight (as was a fellow WP travelling with me). Upgraded to First SYD to BKK.

Then as one of the last to board in BKK! my boarding pass beeped and got an new boarding pass for 4E again through to LHR - turned left at the door to find my colleague in 4F again. Doesn't get much better than that!

It is good when your luck is running in the right direction. :D

The Qantas Operational Upgrade Thread

Checked in earlier for QF846 SYD-DRW. Booked on red e deal. BP now says 1F (763). This is my second op up on this particular flight. Both times have been on a Sunday ( I normally travel Thursday which is usually a 738) on a 763. Thanks Qantas!

Not sure this is the correct thread as this relates to a BA op-up, and I did not want to create a new one so thought I might just post them here:-

Last night (04/10) the GF and I returned home on BA15 SIN-SYD (which also codeshares with QF320 iirc), with separate bookings in N and V class respectively. We were both got upgraded at the gate from Y to J. The J cabin was completely full.

You code the codeshare correct. Were you booked and ticketed as the metal BA15 or the codeshare QF320?

In any case, well done. Don't see that very often and more so with a jump from Y to J rather than just to Y+ (although Y+ would fill up quicker than J would).

After a two year drought with no opups, last Friday CNS - MEL super cheap rock bottom price red e deal to J. Lunchtime flight too. Noice! Upgraded at check in, after asking for exit row, CSA responded "we can do better" - better indeed.

Sadly no J SC's or points.

And for an op-up, of course no J SC/miles would be awarded.

Finally broke the drought tonight.

SYD-MEL, OLCI'd this morning (Seq <20), O class fare (part of the QF Ultimate Amex annual return flight).

Since I printed my BP (which I never usually do), didn't bother with Quickcheck, and decided against checking my bag as it was pretty light. Helped a NB colleague get a BP for an exit row at the J lounge, but didn't think to get them to print one out for me or try for an exit row myself.

Got to the gate early to try and make sure I got some overhead room for my bag. BP did the magic red beep, but the FA told me it was fine and to go ahead. Naturally, I was somewhat disappointed having been trained to look for the magic beep. Boarded, stowed bags and took my seat towards the front of the 763 economy cabin.

Halfway through boarding, another passenger (SG by the look of it) shows me their boarding pass for the same seat as mine. FA took the passes and returned after a fashion with the one I should have been handed after the beeps, and off I went back up the aisle to fight for the little-remaining stowage space in J. :)

Sorry for a longer post that was probably summed up in the first paragraph, but hey, it was my first ever QF Op-up. The J seat/service really isn't that special on the SYD-MEL commute, but I was happy in principle to finally receive an undocumented 'halo' benefit of getting to WP. ;)

Also goes to show that even though you should never get your hopes up, op-ups really can happen right up until the door shuts. :p
