The Operational Upgrade Thread

what, nobody got upgraded for a month? long time no posts here.

Well today I was on a fully booked SYD-MEL QF flight as a QF gold I was op-upped at the gate along with my bronze travel companion who was on the same booking. Got to be happy with that!

On Thursday 7 Feb myself and +1 (also WP) received an Op-up at the gate from discount Y to Y+ NRT-SYD.
Thanks Qantas :)

Friday the 8th got an op up from CNS to SYD on QF925, first upgrade in 66 QF flights over 2 years of regular travel for work. When I was handed the boarding pass on check in at POM I thought they had it wrong. I was happy just wonder how long it will be till the next one.

If you fly QF between SYD and CNS often, your chances are probably going to be pretty high. Usually packed with holiday makers IME even on the 767s, last time on QF926 (73H) was op-up'ed as a SG along with a WP and the flight had 2 tour groups. And the last 767 flight I did CNS-SYD in November was full of various Americans, had some interesting chats with some about their views on American politics.

Got upgraded on BA16 SYD-SIN today. My long-haul op-up record on BA since having OW status currently stands at around 40%. Although I wasn't quite keen on the op-up this time - my friend was travelling on the same flight, on a different booking.

CaviAck,
I have done it a bout 8 times over the last 18 months but first op up (6th time since WP), but yes the flight was full with an American tour group, and it was only half the group from what one of them told me.

I received an op up from Y+ to J on QF10 from SIN to MEL on Saturday 16th. Not sure why, the Y+ would have been pretty full I'm guessing as I had to fly QF2 from LHR to SIN as no Y+ was available on QF10.

It was a very pleasant surprise on checking in Friday at LHR, and overall a good trip. The service for the Y+ leg was excellent too. Very friendly and professional cabin crew.

Well today I was on a fully booked SYD-MEL QF flight as a QF gold I was op-upped at the gate along with my bronze travel companion who was on the same booking. Got to be happy with that!

Out of 226 QF flights I have had four upgrades:

17/10/2012 QF 117 ECONOMY/BUSINESS 16OCT12 SYDNEY/WELLINGTON (not an OpUp per se)
28/08/2012 QF 409 ECONOMY/BUSINESS 28AUG12 SYDNEY/MELBOURNE (first flight as P1)
1/03/2012 QF 409 ECONOMY 15FEB12 SYDNEY/MELBOURNE (weather cancellations in SYD)
13/01/2012 QF 401 ECONOMY 12JAN12 SYDNEY/MELBOURNE

Of those 226 flights 177 of them were potentially upgradeable (i.e. I wasn't in the highest cabin in the AC) giving me an upgrade % of 2.26%. Of the 226 flights I was QF WP on 186 of them.

So although I am "pleased" for you I am not "pleased" that I am not getting the same rate as others...

You are all doing better than me - I have never had an op-up on QF when flying QF and crediting to QFF. (Other airlines give me op-ups semi-frequently).

I've managed 5 from a possible 33 since P1, so 15%. Previously it was around 5%.
I do sense though that the revised upgrade system has somewhat queered the pitch for op-ups on international flights.

SO got an op-up on EK Y to J MXP/DXB recently.

He got status matched to Skywards Gold as a QF WP and asked at MXP if he could pay to upgrade to J. CSA went away and checked then came back & said "I've got a surprise for you, due to operational requirements we've upgraded you to Business Class".

Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

On my First QF Domestic flight (all previous INTL), received free op up to seat 1E in business ;) Just asked the CSM nicely...

You asked for an OpUp onboard and got it? Wow that's a bold DYKWIA move. While I'm sure you were nice and pleasant about it, my manners would never allow me to be so bold. Maybe I'm the fool, you're the one in 1E ;)

Why do you think it was an opup? It just seems like a free upgrade. If it is done for operational reasons then it is an opup.

What you describe would be quite rare for that to happen unless there are some sort extenuating circumstances. Otherwise everyone would be asking the CSM for an upgrade expecting to get one.

Oops, forgot to post.

In December, first long haul flight with VA, SYD-LAX, op-up at the transit desk from Y+ to J.

On Saturday, checking in for my KA flight (in Y) from HGH-HKG was also given my QF128 (HKG-SYD) boarding pass which had me upgraded from Y+ to J. Very enjoyable it was too!

On board upgrade today on cx400 HKG to TPE. CSM told me to take the walk of joy up to J.

Interestingly the A330 was the long haul version so had Y+ seating anyway.

Flew Y+ MEL/HKG for my first taste of Y+ on CX, it was good, although still prefer QF's Y+

I wonder what the reasons of on board upgrades are...

No shows that aren't known until flight closure one presumes, then to give more space to other elite pax perhaps? Certainly isn't for operational reasons. Although doubtful, could be for trim/load balancing reasons but that is a bit of a stretch...
