The Operational Upgrade Thread

In my experience CX love OWE's

Also my experience. I'm hoping for a J-F upgrade on an upcoming CDG-HKG CX260 77W, although with the new CX J being the best in the sky and being seated in the mini-cabin, I don't think I will mind if I don't get past the curtain ;)

Why do you think it was an opup? It just seems like a free upgrade. If it is done for operational reasons then it is an opup.

What you describe would be quite rare for that to happen unless there are some sort extenuating circumstances. Otherwise everyone would be asking the CSM for an upgrade expecting to get one.
Touche, it wasnt operational, but I DID just ask. I have a sayinv that always accompanies me on my travels - if you don't ask, you don't get (wise words)

Just scored the holy grail of upgrades from Y to F on AA's brand new 777-300ER from DFW to LHR. Booked a cheapo consolidator fare in Y, used one of my Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs) to upgrade to J, op-upped to F at the gate. :p

My travelling companions booked under the same PNR remained in J (basically the same seat as CX's new J), so I got to try out both products. I might post a trip report.

First ever upgrade on VA/DJ today - 3C swapped for 1D. :) Thats one QF (but J to F longhaul) and one VA. Both times as WP.

With 14 flights at the end of the year, will be crossing fingers/toes/everything hoping for an op-up on one of them (though I know it's unlikely) to get my first experience in a premium cabin!

After having been devastated at being in 27J (I didn't recheck my seats after changing flights) it was a great start to F1 day to get a boarding pass for 3F today - international config (763) as well I think!

What seat were you in before you got 27J?

If there were no "B" seats ie the 1-2-2 config where seats are A/EF/JK then you would've been on an intl bird.

I went to do online check-in this morning for QF 660 ADL-BNE tomoorow morning and found my J upgrade had come through, so then went to check QF15 BNE-LAX and my pre-selected seat (44K) had changed to "window" and I had no seat selected! And to add salt to the wound, 44K had gone :<(
Called Qantas and she put me back in 44K but said she could not promise it "as there is still an upgrade pending"!
The fare I purchased on the BNE-LAX-MEL sector is non upgradeable, so I'll be curious to see what happens.
I'm happy with 44K, but will be happier if I'm further forward or upstairs!!! And I cannot do on-line check-in. I get a message to check at the airport.

Not sure if this counts as an op up - and not sure why it happened. Was flying canb-melb-cairns November last year and on the return melb-canb leg my ticket was changed at the gate for an exit row seat. I thought maybe it was to seat people together, but the plane was 1/3 empty, so not sure why I would have been chosen for this? Is there a rule that exit rows must be populated? For reference I am a lowly bronze but with quite rapid points growth.

Yes. There are minimum pax requirements for over wing exits. Not sure if its an airline or casa rule.

Whatever that rule is, it certainly doesn't apply elsewhere. e.g. I was on a 3K flight ex-SIN, and I was the only pax in the 2 exit-rows. The load factor was around 80%. Surely, they couldn't be relying on me to open 4 doors?

my flight from sin to kul on mon not a single pax on the exit rows

The interesting thing with it was, the plane had other empty rows, and the other passenger in my exit row asked the flight attendant if he could move to one of the empty rows, with which she had no problem. So I was the only one left in that exit row - a rather low minimum requirement!

Party of three op-upped from W to J on BA15 from LHR-SYD.

Particularly happy about this because I wanted to use miles to upgrade (75,000 Avios for the three of us) but was knocked back because our OTA-booked itinerary included QF segments (currently, it's only possible to MFU ba.com bookings with non-BA segments). I'm 3/3 (100%) on BA long-haul op-ups in the past year (my 4 other long-haul BA flights were in F). Also very pleased to score two op-ups in a row on this particular trip (see my previous AA Y to F upgrade)! :D

Was that with the AA or BA FF number?

I was using my AA number for this particular trip, but my two companions used their BA Silver numbers. I think in the BA order of precedence BA Silver outranks OWE, so their status probably helped us more in scoring the op-up. (Funnily enough, the BA Silvers seemed to get better service than I did too, being addressed by name whereas I basically just had food shovelled in front of me by the same FA.) :)
