The Operational Upgrade Thread

Myself and fiancé were upgraded from business to first on qf 12 from lax to syd on the 29th march. She was on an award ticket with mine being a paid fare. Was a great way to cap off a nice holiday

Had you booked directly through MH website or through a TA?
Was it a cheapy fare or one of the more flexible ones?

It was booked directly with the website. Was a MH Smart fare. Which it is as far as MH fare families goes it is 2nd most flexible out of the 4 economy fare classes.

First ever domestic OP UP today (last time was to SIN as a SG years ago) to CBR for that matter. Was surprised as I am a lowly WP.
Used the pole to check-in, SMS received showing my original 4A selected Y seat, then on boarding, the little docket spat out 1F :)

Had a rather strange one last night on a very full 737.
I was ensconced in 4A with doors closed and everyone seated when the CSM approached with manifest in hand.
Expected the usual greeting but she then asked if the two ladies in 4B & C were my family, which initially seemed odd, but once I had disavowed them I was invited forward to take the last seat in J.
Wife and daughter were not impressed.(Just kidding)

Very curious indeed, the usual explanation of every seat in Y full obviously not applying in this case.

I've seen that happen once before on fairly empty VA flight, but not QF (I assume this was QF given the reference to row 4). Interesting.

I always wanted to post on this thread and finally got my very first opup on Anzac Day- funnily together with my partner (who is QF Silver only) rather than just traveling by myself. We were traveling on a YASA SYD to ADL and noticed when checking in at the poles that our seats had been upgraded from 4A&B to 1A&C.
Lovely surprise and the perfect start to a wonderful short winetasting break in South Australia :p

Wonder who went into 4A? Maybe someone in a middle seat got moved forward into the one you vacated.

If assume to "fix" some other seating issue. Broken belt, broken recline, multiple pos sitting together.

How full was the rest of the aircraft?

Sorry, I didn't think to check after the move, but I wasn't aware of any other shuffling. Thought it might have to accommodate a family couple but nothing was said to 4B or 4C about that.
There were only a few empty seats in Y; EF was showing J2, Y4 just before departure so I definitely wasn't expecting an op-up.

I had one in the last couple of week Y to J SYD-ADL flight. Oversold in Y, tracking the fare classes before the flight and it seemed pretty clear what was going on. Final check and hour or 2 before flight time was J0, YB1. Something like that. The J and high Y fare classes had been switching around for a day or so.

Mmmm I was wonder is there anything I can do to improve the chances of getting an upgrade. Currently sitting on a PNR for 3 pax, 2 NBs and me as SG. Anyway to unlink me from the others but retain seating benefits for them to try nabbing an op-up to Y+ in the chance of Y being full. Flying QF11 on 27/6 and QF12 23/7 as part of a multicity to Canada.

I guess first & foremost it depends who the other 2 NB's are on the pnr. If it's SWMBO & offspring I would say right now - don't even think of it!

However if it's a couple of colleagues & you don't really need to be joined at the hip either call the TA if it's an agent booking or QF direct (if made via QF website)& ask them to split the pnr & divide you out. Most likely the other 2 pax will retain the original pnr & you will be assigned a new one.

Although you can ask for yourself to be "de-linked" from the other pax at checkin, by the time you're at the airport the op-ups will have been actioned by then so you will have missed the boat. I take it you have already done the seat allocation for all 3 of you & if that's the case, the others will not lose that allocation just because they're now in separate pnrs.

Keep in mind too that pax who have 'opted in' for an airport upgrade would obviously get upgraded to the higher class as per their request prior to any op-ups being done. June/July is however a busy time as it's both US & Australian school holidays so with flights usually full anything is possible.

Interesting, so why is it that some reports of op-ups occur at the gate - after checking in and going to the lounge? Surely they would want you to know ASAP?

All 3 pax are on the one PNR bought through QF on a multi-city booking. And in my case I'm the offspring (I'm sure my parents won't mind me getting a free upgrade :) )
I have assigned all three seats, got seats in the upper cabin on the way over and row 81 on the way back :D

Would splitting the PNR have any affect on our other flights on AS and AA? Also would a PNR affect op-up chances?

A couple of reasons I can think of is a seat goes u/s on a full flight, or it's a last minute plane swap.

I'd say that op-ups occur for the convenience of the airline, not the (lucky passenger), and the 'operational reasons' that lead to an op-up can happen right up to boarding and sometimes even once airborne. The regrade isn't designed to give pax access to a better lounge or time to anticipate the delights of the higher cabin, so I wouldn't say early notice is something the airlines would go out of their way to do if an op-up is on the cards - the better seat is just a bonus.

Would splitting the PNR means that you'll get different treatment in case of IRROPs, e.g. sending you to a hotel different from the others (if multiple hotels are used), or having you sent on the next available flight while the others have to wait for another flight?
