The Operational Upgrade Thread

Got a call from Emirates lounge Sydney while I was at work telling me my flight was 90 minutes late EK419 tonight.

At the airport I checked in and the lady at check in was having difficulty getting my seat which I preselected at 18A, she says sometimes towards the end of check in it allocates seats to others if the planes pretty full (I had turned up quite late as the lounge staff had told me not to rush in and to check in late). Eventually she gets me moved back to 18A I thank her head to the lounge. I went to both the Qantas Flounge and moved closer to the Emirates lounge just to check it out as it was close to the gate.

Both times boarding pass scanned and nothing. Then I get to the gate and the lady who checked me in waved me down and said "I've been waiting for you" and passes me a new boarding pass before telling me to go to the premium lane. Moved to business class 8F and saved from the dread 10 across on a 777 :). Business class was absolutely full on the flight I assume the economy cabin was the same.

This is the second time I've flown Emirates, the first time as a platinum and going well so far.

I'm 2 for 2 after my 20 hour stopover in Bangkok went back to check in.

At Checkin I asked if there are any exit row seats available the lady went "Sorry sir we over book have to upgrade" needless to say I didn't complain now in 25A for EK373 BKK to Day Emirates A380 quite excited now.

Was on 3K yesterday, and got moved from 16D to 1A free of charge. I guess that's an op up?

On another story, on CX HKG-SIN today, the flight was completely full - with around 12 DMs in Y down the left side of the plane and a handful of GOs as well. Given that the flight had J5 yesterday, the infamous BN probably came into play.

Whoops haven't updated you guys yet.

I'm now 3 for 3 on the 12th I flew EK151 DXB to CPH, arrived 110 minutes before departure, at check in asked for an exit row, of course being so late in the check in process all were gone. but the lady added "It is an overbooked flight though sir so hopefully you might get an upgrade." Headed to the lounge had some breakfast then went to the gate. Was delighted when the machine only beeped once my boarding pass was ripped up and a new one handed to me. Once again avoiding the dreaded 10 across economy on a 777.

I'm becoming very happy with Emirates, so far I've had 4 op-ups total, 3 have been in the last week getting to Europe on a cheap $1600 5 leg ticket. Before that was a year ago with South African, codeshare with Qantas out of Perth. Anyway I can see more Qantas Codeshare on Emirates in my future.

Well... while QF still exists anyway ;)

I'm flying QF SYD-BKK on Good Friday and coming back the day after Anzac Day. Flightstats is showing J9 Y0 for both flights. Do I have any real chance of a first ever op up here as a WP?

Is it an A330?

I hope you get one. I have never had an op-up on a QF international A330 flight.

Just back from a bit of an odyssey. QF op-upped me from J to F MEL-LAX, and then from J to F LHR-DXB on the way home. That's 5 from 5 from J to F on QF93/94, which I'm not complaining about at all. Got stuck in J on the DXB-MEL leg, which was a nice reminder of what it's like back down the middle of the bus :p

These both happened a while ago, but since most of these reports seem to be on QF flights, I figure there's some value in reporting these as they were on other OW carriers as a result of my QF status:

  • AY81 HEL-SIN in September 2013, Y to J. Op-uped at the gate with an apology that I had to be moved from my chosen seat (in Y) to a seat in J... Being an A340 it was the old slope bed, but it was free and the new Finnish chefs menu was delicious!
  • CX137 HKG-PER in February 2014, Y+ to J. Handed a new boarding pass as I deplaned from my connecting flight in HKG. I had been anticipating this as for some time EF had shown that Y was oversold and J was empty. Onboard the J cabin was full so it seems as though CX oversold the Y cabin by a lot and upgraded a good portion of the Y+ cabin.

Op-up Y to J just now on my upcoming QR flight MUC-DOH (which has been delayed an hour). Gate agent said the upgrade was due to overbooking and my having OW status. KVS currently showing J4 C3 D2 I1 Y0 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0.

Op up for me, Mr Katie, and Little Miss on Friday 11 April on QF513 BNE-SYD. I had tried to request an upgrade online in the week prior due to hurting my back recently, and kept getting a "computer said no" message. I found that odd, as Flightstats was consistently showing U or D8 or 9 in that week. I'd checked us in online the day before, and seats were all row 25.
I got out boarding passes re-printed in the J Lounge after arrival, and was surprised and delighted to see we were all in row 5 now. :D There were still about 7 or 8 empty seats on the way to Sydney (767).

My first op up on QF metal since becoming a WP in May 2011. And it occurred when travelling with the family!! (Mr Katie is SG, Little Miss is PS)

A big one!

I am travelling on Qantas Transpacific to LAX today - Last night I went from 5B to 12E and this morning I was given a BP for 5A on check-in.

Sorry - I'm feeling cryptic this morning ...

There are four configurations of aircraft that Qantas use transpacific, three are B744 and one A388.

Of the B744 configurations only one has a row 5 - it does not have a seat 5A! ;)
