The Operational Upgrade Thread

Here's hoping I'm still in favour with the op-up gods in December/January when Mrs MatF and I go to Europe :)

The up-op gods for both airlines and hotels are known to favor the single traveler, SWMBO gets sick of hearing my upgrades when she is not with me, the double last week with a great suite and J upgrade almost meant I got to sleep in the car when I got home ;).

Heh, sadly I think you're right, though SWMBO so rarely travels (with me or without), I don't have a good basis for comparison.

We've booked PE on the way to LHR, but are in economy all the way back.
We've broken the trip back with a 2-day stopover in HKG, as neither of us could face it in one go.

Business there and back would have been wonderful, but we booked on points, and sadly my balance was lacking (as it was we paid for the HKG home leg).

I have been fairly lucky with hotels lately. When Myself and +1 checked into the Sofitel in Melbourne last time, I ws surprised to be upgraded to a large suite on the 50th floor. It turned out it was my 50th stay!!

Also on our trip to NZ last month +1 decided to come along at the last minute on a red e deal both ways. He got an Op-Up to sit next to me no questions asked. In the First check in area the Lady just said... "Oh you are not seated together" and printed out a J boarding pass for him. Win!

What, not the JohnK one? ;)

You've had a pretty good run the past 12 months I believe though...

+1. You've had a good swag of domestic op-ups.
Yes I have had ~8 domestic op-ups in the past year but I would much rather have a complimentary exit row pre-allocated each time I book an international QF flight or an op-up to business every second international flight. :p

Seems fair to me going by what is reported regularly on AFF by a lowly Silver. ;)

Excuse me:!: DYKWIA:?:

50 stays? You must have a corporate deal there or really like being greeted in Aussie accent french... I got sick of that hotel after 3 months...

(a) showers in bath tubs (pet hate)
(b) waiting 10 mins for the lifts to get up to levels 35+...
(c) poor service considering the amount of time I spent there
(d) the A-Club loyalty card compares really poorly to its competitors

Just wanted to spread the joy at my lucky streak with op-up's recently. Touch wood it continues. Maybe it was due to commercial loads, maybe due to my forward bookings at the time, who knows and who really cares.
MEL-SIN from J to F in late May
SYD-BKK from Y to J in June (not sure how I managed that, my fellow traveler got a Y to Y+ (he is Silver) and was not impressed. I told him to pull his head in and respect us WP... LOL.
BKK-SYD (this is a beauty - I had a Y ticket but my plans changed and I had to get home urgently so had to get another flight and due to load had to rebook in J, then at check in got a F upgrade, too good.)
I also got a Y to J from PER-MEL on 11th July at check in.

On all these flights I never put in for an upgrade using points. Prior to this my luck was not as good. I maybe thinking since I am flying QF to BKK more often instead of direct with JQ *class they might love me more.

Hi All,

I recently had my very first Business class experience via my very first op-up.

The flight was QF6 FRA-SIN, I was opped-up in FRA at the Business check-in desk when I went to get my boarding passes printed (I was connecting in FRA from another carrier). The upgrade was from discount Y to J, with the reason printed on my BP as "UPGRADE DUE TO OVERSOLD ETKT".

Many people on this board would be familiar with the difference between QF Y and J, so I will leave out the details. However I would like to say that the flight was by far the most pleasant 12 hours travelling I have ever spent. Being able to have a shower in the JAL First Class Lounge at FRA T2 was also a nice bonus. Instead of getting off the plane tired and dishevelled, I was rested and refreshed. My only complaint was that I did not have enough time to finish the movie I was watching, due to oversleeping in the comfortable flat seats.

I can now appreciate how some people cannot fly Y after experiencing J.

Another op-up SYD-CNS nice full QF932 in the evening, got the pleasant news at SYD Int-Dom TFR desk :)

Well, its has been a while. Forgot about AFF after dropping down from WP to SG last May :(.

Op-up during my Easter travels:

08APR10
QF32 LHR-SIN
Y -> Y+

Possible reason for op-up:
Were scheduled on an A380 however it broke down and was stuck in JLounge for about five hours (not a bad place to be stuck).

Anyway, equipment change to 747 and op-up'd at the gate.

Nowhere near a full flight.

I am SG.

Op-up today CBR-MEL. Myself and NB colleague travelling on fully flexible fares on a flight showing Y0. J on these flights is nothing great but beats Y any day.

I had a absolutely fantastic run on my recent trip to Mexico and the US.

My partner and I flew 11 legs (QF, AA and MX) and of 11 legs, got opUp'ed on 7 of them!! All discount economy

1. Darwin>Syd, Y>J / QF
2. Syd>SFO, Y>Y+ / QF
3. SFO>JFK, Y>J / AA
4. JFK>MIA, NA / AA
5. MIA>CUN, Y>J / AA
6. CUN>MEX NA / MX
7. MEX>Dallas, Y>J / AA
8. Dallas>IAD, NA / AA
9 JFK>LAX, Y>J / AA
10. LAX>SYD NA / QF - :( would of traded all of the short hops for an upgrade on a long haul!
11. SYD>DRW Y>J / QF.

Overall, I think AA looks after their QF high ranking members better than QF do!!

Received my 3rd OP-up for the year last week when flying Perth - Darwin. Unfortunately while in the lounge I had to cancel my trip. They couldn't get my bags off so they enjoyed a return trip while I stayed in not so sunny Perth.:(

Before this year I've only received one other OP-up. It's my 3rd year at WP and have several trips already booked in the next 6 months including a return flight to Europe so this probably helped:).
