The Operational Upgrade Thread

Received my 3rd OP-up for the year last week when flying Perth - Darwin. Unfortunately while in the lounge I had to cancel my trip. They couldn't get my bags off so they enjoyed a return trip while I stayed in not so sunny Perth.:(
.

Wow, I'm surprised they didn't get the bags off, that's a major security risk and not the way qf usually act. Every flight I've been on they remove any luggage of pax that fail to board.

They should have pulled the bags unless the OP was on a connecting flight, which is probably not a possibility here but who knows, bags are also Ok to go if they have been fully screened.

50 stays? You must have a corporate deal there or really like being greeted in Aussie accent french... I got sick of that hotel after 3 months...

(a) showers in bath tubs (pet hate)
(b) waiting 10 mins for the lifts to get up to levels 35+...
(c) poor service considering the amount of time I spent there
(d) the A-Club loyalty card compares really poorly to its competitors

I just read this reply...

The ONLY thing I ever hear in French is "Bonjour". I hear that at EVERY Sofitel. Does not bother me in the slightest.

I have NEVER had a shower over the bath at Sofitel. I do not stay in the "standard" rooms though. I am with you though in that I HATE a shower over a bath.

The lifts can be a pain in the neck.

I get terrific service at the hotel. (BTW... If anything is not up to scratch I will make it known)

I have to admit that until I was Gold with A-CLub it was nothing special. However now as a Platinum the little extras all do add up.

The thing with me is that I tend to be incredibly loyal when it comes to restaurants, hotels, airlines, etc. Maybe sometimes my loyalty is misguided.... I think though overall it has done me well.

It was awesome to be welcomed into the reastaurant this morning by name and the complimentary Moet started the day nicely! :)

LOL I was just being a bit cheeky about the French greeting thing ;)

I stayed there weekly for 3 months. Had A Club Gold and would occassionally get upgraded to a slightly larger room which had more windows. I asked at reception whether they have any rooms without the shower in the bath tub, and was told that they didn't... Clearly your photo proves otherwise!

On one occasion I was checking in with a colleague. Was given a standard room and asked if there were any upgrades available given a standard perk as A Club Gold. Was told that only the manager can upgrade rooms. Asked if I could speak to the manager given I was going to be there for 6 months (ended up switching to Park Hyatt after 3 months and several poor experiences). Was told that the manager was not on duty on a Sunday. So I think, "ok she is just doing her job". Then my colleague checks in next to me with another lass and I hear him asking for an upgrade. A minute later I hear "yes, I can upgrade you to a xx_ room"... I decided not to say anything because I just don't like making a big fuss

Glad your experience has been much better. I'm all for loyalty but I think it has to be a two-way street.

Cheers,

JOBU

i had an interesting one for my last trip syd to joburg, free upgrade from business to first on the way over, requested points upgrade on the way back and didnt get it (even though there were only 4 people up front). maybe they were short of hosties.

See what happens this week on the same leg, I find >50% of the time I am upgraded with QF

Not to derail the thread, but you list your status as QF PS (OWR) and were upgraded to J only, but you managed to use the F lounge! How? What am I missing?

I am not very familiar with lounges being only a PS, but I believe Qantas contracted the JAL F Lounge for the use of their Business Class customers (the BA lounge in FRA T2 is closed). The flight I was on did not have an F class.

Oh cool. Just was trying to get my head around it ;)

over 50% of the time? I haven't got one yet... you full fare business?

Does this count as an op up, I always had the impression that you turn up and they change the boarding pass on you...

About 10 hrs before my flight from BA to Sydney I was given the option of choosing J seats when I was on a PE ticket when selecting seats. The option wasn't available the night before.

The service was the same as PE ie the food, we got the Skybed rather than the usual PE seat.

Most of the time it is full fare - it could also be the route, mainly to Joburg and Buenos Aires. My trips to LA I used points once and work paid for the other times.

Also I do quite a bit of travel with emirates on a 4 sector trip. Each time I have used points on one sector I normally get an upgrade on another. First with emirates is like a different world where as business is like premium economy (well at least on the A340)

all emirates F class the suites?

gumpy, what you came across is one of the cabin redefinitions that Qantas have been doing since the GFC impacted.

Many people in PE have scored skybeds during that time with PE service. Quite a few have also received PE seating with WHY service.

Happened to me in Jan - op-upped from economy to PE and was able to select a skybed. ;)

man that is the mother of all op-ups...

The best one I've ever heard of (and it's another AFF member, so it's probably posted around here somewhere) was a flight from LHR to MEL in discount whY with a successful points upgrade to J and then an on-board upgrade to F.

Was seriously unimpressed..!

I'm still maintaining my 100% perfect record of absolutely 0 op-ups on any carrier ever.. :(

I'm zero international op-ups and also zero on use of points upgrade (tried 5 times) including a number of cases when F open and J0
(although I have been gifted and used a SWU on AA DME-ORD)

Domestically a bit better
2 syd-bne-syd and 2 syd-mel-syd and a syd-cns
Decent strike rate on odus when I ask.

man that is the mother of all op-ups...

Can slightly one-up that one, upgraded from Y to J on LHR-MEL service a few years back, and ended up being bumped to F (Someone had been bumped to F but his wife wasn't allowed up, so she asked if I minded swapping with him so they could sit together, asked the CSM and all was done, that was a nice flight back home!)

I had something similar. Was flying in S class LHR-SIN on A380. Points upgrade to J cleared, and then when checking in at Brussels BA counter, was given 4F by the checkin machine. That was my third flight on the A380 in F.

So far, oddly enough, I've flown more sectors in F than any other class on the A380, though I don't expect that to continue for much longer (4/3/3/2 at the moment)
