The Planespotting/General AV Geek Thread

I saw a really weird looking bird coming in to land at YMX...for a moment I thought I was hallucinating, a 747SP with an engine mounted by the coughpit!
A bit of search of Google told me that this is in fact a P&W aircraft used to test engines (registration C-FPAW). I didn't have time to take a picture as I was on the highway, but here are some I found:

A very interesting find defurax the engine looks quite small and I guess there would be a limit on the amount of thrust that mounting would take. I wonder if the test engine would fly the 747 at cruising altitude?
I once flew in a QF 747 Sydney to Beijing with a spare 747 engine attached under the wing, it was a high fuel burn with a top up required in Manila.

The flight I was talking about was in 1986 and it was one of the first Qantas flights to Beijing. I think at that stage Qantas maintained engines for the Chinese in their Sydney workshops. As it turned out we carried another engine on the return journey back to SYD.
It was interesting to look around the Beijing airport at that time. Almost all of the metal was Soviet and I guess it has all crashed by now.

Great flight CBR-BNE today for several reasons.

1. Watched a 4-ship formation group taxi and depart in unison, impressive flying. Not roulettes from yesterday's ADFA open day, smaller trainers I didn't recognise.

2. Left this for balmy Brisbane winter (21 deg sunshine):

...and 3. The VIS REDUCING 8000 IN PASSING SH above was a snow drift. Not sure I've flown through a snow shower in CBR before. It was beautiful. SEV TURB not so much :)

Whilst searching for something else, came across this interesting page (for those in/visiting BNE)

Brisbane Airport Corporation - Plane Spotters

Great page! More airports should do this - not just those flogging viewing decks.

Sydney Airport support these activities as well...

https://www.sydneyairport.com.au/corporate/sustainability/community/aviation-enthusiasts

They're upgrading one of the public plane spotting areas at the moment.

And I didn't realise Rydges at the airport hosts planespotter events: https://www.rydges.com/accommodation/sydney-nsw/sydney-airport/things-to-do/plane-spotter-event/

Time to go start a thread in the events area.

Some help needed to ID this USAF? tanker? at BNE today. Sorry for poor photos, taken from the Airtrain on a phone.
