The Planespotting/General AV Geek Thread

@Pliny
The aircraft modelnumber B767-2AX might be the clue
It is owned by Saudi Aramco with a rego N767A (Aramco = Arabian and American Oil company but now a nationalised company)
Usually these aircraft are Flight tracking app silent (as per request by owners of these aircraft)
Same reason you cant see James Packer's flights

Probably carrying a Saudi ambassador /dignitary.

I thought initially King Hussein of Jordan but he flies in an Airbus.

Thanks Quickstatus for the info. If it wasn't for the contrail I'd have thought it was just a regular commercial flight. Others down here in Tassie made comments about the huge trail it left. It probably was going to the Memorial service then. The slow descent into Christchurch was interesting and flying at 31,000 feet.

Nothing unusual about contrails (condensation trails). Depending on several factors such as such as temperature and humidity at the altitude which the engine is travelling in, the contrails may dissipate or in minutes or persist for several hours and be several miles wide. The position of the sun at the time and your position may give an enlarging or brighter visual effect.

NZ175 was at 37000 ft when over Tasmania. Nothing really unusual about 31000 ft.

@Pliny @Quickstatus
Quickstatus is corrrect, flight was carrying Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir. He attended the memorial service in Christchurch.
Also believe the return flight was carrying the body of a Saudi national killed in the attack. Flew RUH-PER-CHC-PER-RUH

I guess the question has been answered. Hopefully not something that will happen again. Thank you both Quickstatus and Boca.

Sorry for the duplicate files - should have used the laptop, not the tablet!
Today, the bucket list was reduced by one - a flight on a B17 Flying Fortress.
We flew out of John Wayne airport, along the coast - if you look closely, you will see the Queen Mary.

Getting in was fun - where is the airbridge when you need it!

Comfort plus - had trouble finding Business Class, and we never did see the drinks trolley!

Queen Mary is down there at Longbeach

All in all, it was a fantastic flight, courtesy of the Collings Foundation.

WOW! That looks awesome! Thanks for sharing :)

Lined up behind, and then watched an interesting takeoff in Cairns the other day.

Not the best shots but grateful for any info on the bird.

On that, what causes the smoke rings clearly evident on the close-up of the pipe?
In afterburner, the exhaust flow is supersonic, so you end up with a number of shock waves, which appear as rings here, but often as diamonds.

If you look around on YouTube, you should be able to find numerous fighters setting power at take off. Look at the exhaust nozzle. In most cases you'll see it change shape, from a converging duct, to a diverging duct. Subsonic air accelerates in a converging duct, but supersonic air does so in a diverging duct....and you want your exhaust flow to be accelerating, otherwise you've effectively blocked it.

The supersonic flow is why afterburners are so noisy.

A rare visitor to ASP today, Rex Saab VH-KDQ operated ADL-ASP-ADL as ZL9430/9931. Purpose unknown, as Rex doesn’t operate RPT to ASP...
