The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Currently booked in QF Y+ out of LAX but looks like there is reward availability in AA J. Does anyone rate their 777 product?

I am QC so already get access to the business lounge

Hi, can I book classic reward seats using points and then other part of the trip with cash? I can find reward seats from A-B and return but not B-C (and return). The B-C is not with qantas but they do code share with the other airline. I haven't found a way to book this on their website, do I have to call to book this or is there another way?
I also would need to add our child (8 months by the time of flying) to the booking. Can this done later or needs to be with when I book the seats?
TIA

Probably not possibly via QF.

You can book them separately but obviously not “protected” if there’s a mis-connect.

If you have the time, book the A-B return on points. Have an o/n stay and pick up the paid fare B-C return. You might take the risk on the return to avoid another o/n and connect on same day.

Gday All, I'm trying to find out about check-in on Qantas for the domestic leg of an international trip - the most recent post on here seems to be from 2008, so apologies in advance if it's still relevant.

A mate and I fly MEL-SYD then SYD-JNB on one ticket. Do we need to check in at international or domestic in Melbourne? Qantas don't seem to have any info about this kind of ticket, unfortunately.

Many thanks!

You check in at domestic. There are a set of dedicated counters for international connections in T1.

I've never originated a DOM-DOM-INT flight in Melbourne, but have in HBA, where I just check into normal domestic desks (the only ones :) ). Why do they have separate check-in desk at Melbourne? Anywhere else?

Why not? I think it is helpful to have separate desks tbh. If ghese agents are constantly doing this they're more used to dealing with things like flying earlier, checking the (sometimes complex) requirements for international travel, properly tagging etc (plus I've had F tags affixed there as an aside).

Plus I think it is helpful to separate specific needs pax from general to speed processing for both.

Could a regular desk do the check in? Yes for sure, but the dedicated area is actually good for pax imo (something not often said of QF!)

No reason why not, but you've given a good reason for them - dedicated desk is possible due to volume. But I'm surprised they haven't been enhanced into the regular check-in machines.

If you try to check in with the machines at regular check in area, does the machine send you to the other desk?

When compared to HBA? I would think it be economics and the number of PAX connecting so from MEL being generally much more than the number of such PAX from HBA.

No, not really compared to HBA, just noting that 'ordinary' agents there always get me away OK (but I guess I don't see it when they don't for others:) ).

Can’t comment on the machines, but at BNE if you’re eligible to use the premium lounge entry and try to check-in there with an international connection you be sent back out to the check-in hall to use the International desk.

Newb question and I think I probably know the answer - want to confirm my understanding.

Flying MH140 (SYD-KUL), in Y, QF WP - can the staff at SYD QF F lounge change seats on a MH metal? My understanding is QF lounge staff won't be able to change seats.

Want to snatch a seat in the extra leg room rows (9 and 10) in A330 for free, if possible (right now charges $91 approx) OR can ask nicely at check in?

I believe also you should check in 90 minutes prior, to check documents etc and are not able to check in online.

We are doing this early June, did have a quick look in February when we were at Tulla, the desk is to the right of Security. It did not appear to be manned mid morning. If that is the case, I would imagine you would just approach one of the kiosk staff.
If you are doing this shortly, would appreciate if you can report back with your experience.
And welcome to AFF @Tango101
Happy travels ✈️

Nope, they wouldn't have access - specially for a function like that abd prob refer to gate staff. Best to sort that at check in ratger tgan waiting for liunge (even if connecting in SYD you still would pass by check in and as WP can use MH J check in of course)

I've checked in an hour prior for connection with no ussue (for flying to US). Really more about checking API via passport and asking the standard questions (Are you flying with an ESTA etc). Pretty painless. Probably could do it under this as per dom check in requirements, though I wouldn't chance it.

Many years ago due to a foul up in the Tulla freeway I arrived running at check in barely :30 prior. Luckily was HLO and they grudgingly made it happen (probably only because I was P1 tbh). I did have a buffer as could have taken the next flight, but I was happy I did get on my original flight. Think it took me half the flight to calm my nerves. I do not recommend this! :D

A tiny fix of typos... ;)

Though, in all honesty, I find the QF check-in agents usually competent. And if they ever get stuck, they usually have adequate support available to them on spot.
D'oh. Yes, fixed those. Phone phat fingers strike always (and I did not notice!)

But yes, I agree those agents do seem definitely on the ball and more responsive / able to do things like fly ahead for int connects in SYD etc.

Bit of a random question. Can you use the QF airside transfer bus if you haven't had a connecting international/domestic flight.

Eg. I stay at the Rydges but have a domestic flight. Can I go to the T1 domestic check-in and drop my bags there and take the bus across to the domestic terminal. I'd have a valid domestic boarding pass.

Conversely, if I check-in online for an international flight and HLO. Could I enter through the domestic terminal and take the bus across to T1?
