The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

I have an AAward for QF Y SYD-MEL, and then JL Y+ MEL-NRT on the next day. It is 22 hour transit but stay at MEL overnight.

Can I check through all the luggages to NRT at SYD and pick up both boarding passes at SYD, or I have to pick up all luggages at MEL, and then check in at MEL to NRT next day?

Im trying to set up a fare alert, but it seems to deafult to whY and I cant seem to find a way to get an alert only for J on specific date. Any clues?
Unless you deliberately provide a low price that may never get met, doesn't this simply provide the airline with insight into how much over the odds you're prepared to pay?

No overnight baggage in Australia afaik. So yes you'll need to take your bags then check in again thr next morning

My understanding is that it just notifies you if the price drops below the price at the time you set the alert, you don't set a price.

Given the route I'm watching Is not currently on sale, it would just let me know if that changes.

I have purchased J on the route before, so QF already knows what I've been willing to pay in the past, not worried about that at all.

My issue is that it only seems to work for whY and given there is not always a correlation between whY and J sales that doesn't help me.

Off to Haneda, Tokyo tonight. Originally was flying at 2:50pm from Adelaide to Syd, then 9:30pm out of Sydney to Haneda.

Qantas cancelled the ADL-SYD flight, and changed the flights to ADL to MEL, then MEL to SYD, landing at 8pm - with only 1 hour, 30 mins to transfer from domestic to international and get on the plane.

I am concerned that is not enough time... calls to Qantas to see what else could be done were futile.

Do we have any chance at all?

Should be enough time. Certainly meets the minimum connection time.

More than enough time! Five mins to get off plane. 15 mins to wait for the transfer bus. 5 min journey time. 25 mins.

Security and passport control is really quick these days at Sydney.

Provided the flights are in time… you’ll be at the gate in plenty of time for boarding.

If late, you’ll still be protected, but might have to overnight in Sydney.

I would still call to see if there’s an earlier set of connections, or ask at the check in counter at ADL… they have a lot of leeway to move you to alternative flights.

Question for the experts re: cancelling a booking for a flight credit please -:

I made a booking earlier this year for 2 pax on the same PNR. I unfortunately need to cancel this, but was wondering how it works when 2 pax are named on the booking? i.e. I know the PNR is retained, but are both pax "linked" to that same flight credit (and PNR) such that the credit has to be used for the same pax on a future booking?

TIA.

Actually, I may have answered my own question. Looks like a flight credit can include multiple pax (assuming the cancelled booking included multiple pax). Perhaps someone can please help to confirm whether my understanding is correct?

The credit is issued in the same two names. Usually that means both have to use the credit. But if you ask nicely QF will split it into two credits, one for each person.

Thanks for confirming. I shouldn't need to split it, but perhaps for future reference or for anyone who comes across this particular question, I'm guessing splitting into two credits would result in two separate PNRs?

Haven't found this after a few google searches of AFF, but it may have been asked before.

Can you upgrade a QF metal Award flight using QFF points, via Classic Rewards Upgrades, if it's booked through a partner airline? I don't think so, but asking to be sure (I think this falls under the Oneworld alliance-wide upgrade program that's in progress)

I have some spare Avios points (AY) and want to redeem QF128 (HKG SYD). Only X is available, no U.
If this isn't possible, then I only see a ticket change with Finnair being the only way to "upgrade" to U, albeit with a 50EUR fee. AY don't seem to have much J availability in Asia anyway so this would be a stretch.

25k Avios seems reasonable vs. 35k on CX on the same route.

Do I get my QF Gold baggage allowance benefits if I'm flying Qantas Melbourne to HKG and then HKG to Taipei via EVA Air? I'm looking to book on the Qantas website as one trip, and I am assuming the baggage will be automatically transferred onto the 2nd leg.

I dont believe so. For upgrades I believe you need to be ticketed on a QF ticket stock and any other FF program would not be using QF 081 tickets.

Wouldn't the most significant carrier (MSC) rule apply? In this case, QF would be the one crossing the region boundaries, therefore their limits apply.

Cathay had a good explanation of it. Yours would be the point 2 on their list.

Hi all
Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong thread. I'm a Gold QFF and have been for approx 5 years mainly from work travel domestically but also internationally in business and economy. I've been a member since 1998 and held gold and platinum at various points in that time. I'm on mat leave atm and my membership expires end of Nov. I submitted a request for a status hold but qantas will not honour it because I am outside of the 6 month period you can apply after the birth of your child. My maternity leave ends in January and the age of my child matters naught to my membership date and maternity leave date. Any insight as to why they insist you apply before your child is 6 months? I've got flights to London booked in Jan in fully flexible eco and was hoping my gold status would help with upgrades. Will now likely to downgraded to silver. Loyalty matters not to qantas it seems.

Presumably the time when most people pause their travel is very near to the time of birth.

Why six months specifically, no idea. But they need to draw the line somewhere.
I could understand if it was linked to the date your membership expires (i.e. you must apply before your membership date lapses) but I can't understand the logic. The date of my leave and the date my membership rolls over are fixed. The dont change and are not linked to my childs age. The outcome, had I applied when my child was 6 months old - would have meant my membership was extended for up to 18 months. Because I am doing it shortly after 6 months, it has been denied.
