Left a very sour taste in my mouth. Does everyone turn a blind eye and say this is not my problem?

These days you just don't know what they are carrying concealed. I guess in the USA it'd be a gun. In Aust, a knife.

RIP Maggie Thatcher. A grocers daughter made good in a (then) class riddled country.

I remember the Mickey Mouse club but not repeats unfortunately. (Interesting that the show only ran for three years but is so well known by so many.)

I think I am the same, but I can't remember! :) scarey.

Fawlty Towers only had 13 episodes but everyone knows them. That is impressive.

First day back in the office since the dog died on Friday - first time I have turned off all the lights in the house when leaving for work in a long time - we always used to leave one on for her. Very sad day.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your loved dog Simon. As a child Mr Pushka wasn't allowed to have a dog because his father thought the angst of the (eventual) loss wasn't a good thing for a child. But I think that misses the whole point of loving.

My nic is of my cat - Pushka. This was a stupid thing to do in hindsight as she is now quite old and will eventually pass in the next few months. But my nic is everywhere. So a continual reminder of her, which maybe isnt a good thing.

It was my birthday last week, and I'm really starting to feel
my age.

I'm definitely not young anymore :(
But keep in mind that its a scientifically proven fact that the people who have the most birthdays also live the longest :p

I hoping to soon start thinking about the memories we had rather than the loss. I worked from home yesterday and didn't have to get up to let her out once - that made the day quite depressing.

Sorry to hear of your loss Simon , I think non animal lovers underate how deeply people are moved when they lose a dog , I have been there myself and it was a tough time .
I think you mentioned you have a four old child maybe when things settle down and it is not so raw it would be a good time to introduce a pup and your child and pup can grow together enjoy one of lifes great experiences.
All the best

Sorry for your loss. My two dogs are getting on (13 and 15) and I dread the day they won't be around. They've both been with me since I was in high school, so I imagine it will be like losing a member of the family.

Thanks Rallo. That is definitely the plan. This was my fifth Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - in fact my family hasn't been without a Cav since 1987 - I even brought the family dog with me to Oz (four of teh five have been rescue dogs as well). After we lost the last one 18 months ago we meant to get another to keep this one company but couldn't find a rescue dog and didnt want a puppy at that stage.

This time we will get a puppy but wait until later in the year (after a large overseas trip) and then my parents will be visiting so can assist with house training.

I suspect we will also look for a slightly older rescue dog as well - it feels odd in the house with just one dog and now even more odd with none.

A cavvy - my parents had one called Buddy. Sadly he developed heart disease when he was about 8 and he was put to sleep. He was my Dad's dog really, and at the time he was being treated for pancreatic cancer, and that is a wicked cancer. And sadly he died a couple of months later. That was a dreadful time for my mum.

They are beautiful dogs. I love their eyes, so round and black. Just gorgeous.

We've got two Std Fox Terriers......litter pups. Don't know how wise that was - very active & keep the four of us on our toes.

I grew up with 4 Border Collies and then nothing for 25 years.......it's nice to have dogs again.

Great thing with dogs is that it doesn't matter how bad a day you have had they are always glad to see you .

Three of the five had heart conditions - Rosie was on three different pills just before we lost her - always trying to find new ways of hiding the pills in food...

That's interesting Simon, my parent's vet said they were prone to this problem and you have just confirmed that. I have to give blood pressure pills to Pushka each day - she is quite ferile and the males in the family can't believe I force her jaws open each day - they aren't brave enough. This is the cat that has bitten me so many times, and several doses of antibiotics later as she gave me an infected hand. Cat teeth are like needles - they bite, and then the wound immediately closes over, leaving the bacteria inside and they become infected. This happens almost immediately - my hand swelled within the hour. I cant hide the tablet in her food as she then refuses to eat.

Damn pets. :)

We tried many things with Rosie - she was generally ok but at times would manage to eat whatever vessel we used and spit out the pill - smoked salmon worked fairly well. And slivers of sausage with a pill shaped recess scraped out of them.

Quite a gourmand, that Rosie. Things we do.... :)

I can certainly relate to the pet thread here being a fairly new cat owner, a rescued Burmese if you will. She is very demonstrable and wags her tail quite a lot, especially when she's not happy.

She will greet me at the door when I return home and demands tummy tickles before I enter the house properly.

One thing about Burmese cats is that they are very heavy, she's 5kg with no fat. The fur lined brick that you really notice when she is sitting on your lap as you watch television together.
