I have nothing against Thatcher ... in fact my political beliefs generally lean her way.

Plenty of discussion in local newspapers about how the funeral will cost 10 million pounds, but really who gives a toss? The recent royal wedding probably cost 3 or 4x that.

I thought she had requested no state funeral?

I believe that a state funeral has not been offered (the Brits are very select when it comes to them) although there will be a ceremonial funeral. I have no idea what the difference is.

The principal difference between the two is that for a state funeral there must be a vote in Parliament. It must also be approved by the Queen - she did also assent to the decision to give Lady Thatcher a ceremonial funeral, though.

The coffin would also usually lie in state - something Lady Thatcher did not want.

Does anyone else think that security and riots will be an issue with the Funeral? I am thinking GB is just busting with disenfranchised people; no Olympics to look forward to and itching for a fight.

Sadly yes. Whilst I detested virtually all of her politics she was popularly elected and is considered a transformational leader.

For those who were adversely affected I think that rather than protest etc if they have a private function away from the funeral area, invite the press and remember what she did that was so bad to them. It would legitimise their grievances much more and in a positive way rather than a negative way.

There are divisions of the PIRA & RIRA (Dissident Republicans) who are under close surveillance at this stage!! I would imagine there is a real threat to the funeral that the British Intelligence would be taking seriously.

Personally, I despise the woman, what she did, what she stood for, her ethics, morals and her character, however I would never in a million years host, attend or even acknowledge a party celebrating somebody's death, thats just sick! Its interesting how many people I saw on the news celebrating her death who were not even alive when she reigned!

I hope based on posts in another thread, JohnK, that you will keep checking and double checking the departure boards(Not flying Virgin are you?)

Most unusual experience last night. Had been to indoor beach volleyball and took 6 y.o. daughter so she could play with a schoolfriend. We both came home with sand everywhere so I to shower. I was washing my hair, positioned slightly off left of centre and suddenly my elbow (with some downforce) comes into contact with the ceramic soap holder which shears off and breaks into quite a few sharp pieces. Lucky my daughter was standing in the opposite corner. Looks like a repair job for my father-in-law

You shower with your 6 yo daughter! I had to stop doing that when the oldest was in kindy/pre-school/whatever the thing is they do the year before starting school. Kindy teacher secretly gave my wife a picture of "dad in the shower". Embarrassment plus . Around the same time youngest daughter had a curious moment while I was washing my hair.  I almost broke the soap dish as well, that day.

About to relocate to the wine bar at the office for a meeting :)

When Yugoslav Dictator Josip Broz Tito died, many people across the world held parties (including my family). I am sure their would have been people who celebrated when Stalin and Hitler died.

And that's one of the joys of this world we live in, it's filled with all types of different people!

I imagine a state funeral would include something like Churchill had - coffin on the back of a gun carrier through the city.

I am intrigued by the family's thoughts on this. I would interpret no state funeral as not requiring current world leaders to attend. Very few of them would be relevant to her period of power.

There are no circumstances that I would click on a link to the Mirror.

Sadly yes and I expect the rioters to blame her for them rioting.

You and I are on opposite sides of politics and this is certainly one of the most rational posts on this topic. I am reviewing my Facebook friends on the basis of their reaction to this.

To equate Tito, Stalin and Hitler (jointly responsible for the murder of close to 30 million people) with Thatcher is disgraceful.

.

Agreed, I was thinking of doing the same until I realised that I would have to delete almost all the Scots and most of my relatives from my Facebook feed
I am now maintaining a dignified silence ;)

I am especially reviewing the one who came from a comfortable background, went to grammar school and then university. Not sure how badly they were affected by Maggie...
