The totally off-topic thread

Sounds like the stuff spouted about CBR being a good place to live. It's not.
Maybe.

I used to listen to all the stuff about "Queensland beautiful one day, perfect the next" and then I lived here for 5 years. It could not be further from the truth.

Someone recently described Brisbane/Queensland as "the place that always sleeps" and that just about sums up my experience. Sugar coated it any way you want but that is the truth.

LOL, unlikely to offend anyone, its all about your quality of life, Sydney for me has no attractions of interest despite having been born there and lived a significant part of my life there. I am glad my son and daughter are Queenslanders, they have a chance at living life where the mortgage is not a nightmare,....

I often invite Sydney and Melbourne colleagues home for a BBQ on the balcony, its interesting to watch the stress leave over the course of the night. Life is good, and I am glad we don't all want to live in the one place.

When it comes to state of origin who do you support.

Looking at a JFK/LCY one-way redemption on BA's A319 Club World service.

What would you prefer to spend:
  1. AAdvantage - 50k miles + USD 438
  2. BA Avios - 24k miles + GBP 549

The above prices are all inclusive of taxes and so on. The Avios co-pay is much higher because it normally takes 40k Avios to make this redemption, so it's actually an Avios+Money redemption, plus the usual taxes and fees.

The forum should set up a political party devoted entirely to flying. It would be nice to have an AFFer in parliament getting more funding for our airports.

Strewth, have you seen the political thread in "playground"? The Sydney government will have a second airport built before we agree on anything.

I would love Sydney to have a second airport and Melbourne to have a rail connection to the airport. If the current government and the previous government did not waste money on middle class welfare and vote buying (Bonus money) but instead focused on spending money on much needed infrastructure, like more airports, better transport to airports and fast rail from MEL via SYD to BNE.

Are you sure you don't want to outsource that job? No FF points on any work travel... though the SCs (and perhaps CL) would be beneficial I suppose! :p

Glenlivet 18yo in a J lounge? Special Promo in the GLA BA lounge...

And they stupidly left the keys in the cabinet where there are more bottles. Lol. (And no, I didn't grab one as a take away)

Out of all the places I've seen in the world, there is nowhere else I would rather live than Canberra. Fantastic to have so much open space. I live three blocks from the Canberra Centre in one direction and one block from bushland in another. Not just an itty bitty green reserve, but many square kilometres of reasonably rugged and untouched country.

The facilities - for a city this size - are excellent. Top notch institutions just a few minutes away along excellent roads.

Yes, if I was a billionaire, I might live somewhere else, but for a householder with a family, it's fabulous.

Sounds like the layed back, relaxing lifestyle of QLD is too stressful for some.

Maybe.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. You really do not seem to be making the most of the Qld lifestyle. Your choice. But when I moved from Cairns to Brisbane it took me 8 years to get into the lifestyle of the place. I still really miss it. I miss being able to do things at a whim and not having to put on a 3 act play just to do anything like is required in Sydney. As for sleeping, my life was on 24/7 in the last few years I lived in Brisbane. It was actually a bit of a break to go to a job that required me to be rolling for shift change over at 5-6 am and to work 10+ hour days.

As for the weather, the main thing is it's warm. It's always warm, except for about 3 weeks around Ekka time. it doesn't matter if it's raining when it's warm. In fact, surfing in the rain is rather good.

I like to think we'd agree on transport related matters without too much debate.

What lifestyle? In bed by 9:00pm and up at 5:00am? To do what? Feed the cows?

The problem with Brisbane is the people have not adjusted to city life and anyone that moves here (hint: think people from outside of Brisbane) quickly adjusts to the boring life as there is nothing else they can do.

I am glad I can leave and not stuck in this time warp.

Ha!

I worked in Brisbane for a year, when someone asked me to describe what I thought about QLD'ers, my response was "Lovely people, just seem a little slow and too laid back for my liking"

But, afterall, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! ;)

Sounds somewhat about right :)

I think many people from south would say we're laid back - maybe too much for liking.

We're definitely not a SYD or MEL which is bustling all hours of the day. In fact, someone said ages ago that BNE is more like a student town due to our massive student population (mainly international tertiary students).

Some say that BNE is on the alternative edge as well, with new "hip" places like in Fortitude Valley, West End and so on with a different cultural spin to the equivalent kinds of establishments in MEL and SYD (the latter if there are any).

Whatever you say about BNE, we're definitely viewed as not quite the eastern seaboarders that at least 8 million people would have you believe (i.e. in the south). Compared to the south, especially those from SYD, maybe we're not going fast enough.

But hey, we're probably a better place still to live than some other freak places. *cough* Canberra *cough* :p  *runs*

Mind you, I was born and bred here and in the back of my mind I'm yearning for a sea change....

Also, I believe QLDers must be one of the few Australians - or at least eastern seaboarders - that think it's possible to deliciously combine fruit and seafood or meat in a dish. Watching the cooking shows, every time a QLDer puts fruit on a warm dish of seafood or meat, they get slammed.
