I'm finally getting a replacement for my 2009 (10?) Dell vostro 1520. Helps when the screen dies and I can't do any work (well, I did know to attach a desktop screen, but that's unworkable for any length of time and totally inappropriate for travelling :o :D ;))

What are you thinking of getting?

Samsung and Toshiba seem to get good reviews. One thing I would like to do is stick with Win7.

Might need to check out MSY but not sure if they stock quality models or only the "cheapies".

Wouldn't it be good if we could do an AFF bulk buy. :)

Not a happy chappy this morning - my just on 12 months old Ultrabook is playing up. I suspect the coffee spill  has taken its toll.
Doubt that it will be cost effective to repair so it looks like a new Laptop or Ultrabook will have to be purchased

Most laptops these days have a layer under the keyboard to guard against spills. Your keys are probably not working from the coffee gunk that got in. It is possible to cleans the keys or even taking out the whole keyboard to clean or swapping the whole keyboard. Connect up a keyboard to your laptop to see if the external keyboard works or not?

Thank you for your advice whatmeworry. I contacted the dealer in Sydney and have already sent back the laptop for them to check under warranty as it is only 9/10 months old. Hopefully they will have reasonably good news (unlike our Dyson which also blew up this week and is not repairable). Otherwise it might be time to head towards Toshiba or Samsung. Unfortunately Samsung don't seem to have much in the 13-14 inch screen size which is what I prefer. Not sure about Toshiba so may have to research if it comes to that.

Warranty repairers will often pickup quite easily that something has been spilled on it and charge accordingly (or offer to....), if not - then you've had a stroke of luck! Depending on budget, this could be a good option to consider: X1 Carbon | ThinkPad Ultrabook | Lenovo (AU)

It's probably like mobile phones. They can check very quickly with some sort of hidden device if there's water damage.

The ABC are having a little problem with language tonight on the news.Talking about illegalising something but also spelt it as ilegalising as well.
Then in an article from the USA they called the Marine drum and bugle Corps a band.As they tell it it is a Corps not a band.

Spelling is my "thing". (Grammar, not so much. :D although I groan when I see "should of" instead of "should have".) It amazes me the poor spelling I've seen even on the ABC.

There's a report going around quite a bit (I think U Melbourne ran the study, or so it was portrayed as such in one news cast) that Australians, in general, are quite dumb (and getting dumber) when it comes to scientific knowledge.

I'm sure it's the same trend for maths.

But I'm also sure that there are tons out there who claim that:
  • You don't need maths or science in life to succeed
  • Since when do you use either heavily in daily life (except for those who need it as part of their professions)
  • That's what Wikipedia, Google and calculators are for

Which of course begs to reason why Australia is academically one of the poorest performing nations in the developed world (though suffice to say, the culture of cheating in China may have something to say about skewing those observations).

Perhaps the fact most of our "leaders" were poor academic performers yet seem to have done well for themselves is a factor, at least from a business owners perspective, life experience leaves academic performance for dead. The corporate world is full of honory degrees etc.

For a moment I was afraid the moron of a streaker would deny QLD.

To those that don't care about State of Origin - we know...

Anyway, word has it that the NSW Premier was going to welch on the long term tradition, and the QLD flag will not be flying on the Sydney Harbour Bridge this year. Really sore now, aren't we?

Samsung have a new 9 series 13" ultrabook being released soon - 2 models - ATIV Book 9 Plus and ATIV Book 9 Lite (lower specs than the Plus).
The Plus has impressive specs - 3200 x 1800 resolution, i7 Haswell CPU, 256 SSD/8GB etc. Plenty of reviews and full details available on Google. The Lite model is being released at the end of this month for $799 in the US - no release date or price for the Plus yet.

Hmmm ...do you think AUD pricing is likely to be significantly more? I'm in the market and US bound October

Cheers for that info. I am looking at the Sony SVP13213 ultrabook range w i5 haswell, 128gb ssd, 4gb ram, 13.3in FHD touch screen for ~$1350. If only it had 256gb ssd, I would have already bought one. Now I'll wait for the Samsung model and compare - hopefully its not too high in the $1,000 range.

Was it a maroon moron?
from the few glimpses I could see, pale Caucasian ...

... seemed to run out of ideas nears the goal posts ... so just flopped on their belly and waited for the yellow coat tackle ...
