That's really sad. Plus, the engagement ring cost the husband to be money .. not the wife to be! If they can't afford certain basics then they shouldn't be splashing out on the ring ............ YMMV ;)

Given they live together, and are getting married, it's "their" money anyway. They've just been to Europe so things can't be too bad. I'm thinking I my choose my own present, I'm not against a gift so much, just the listing of a registry on the invite.

I didn't think a gift registry was compulsory but a preference.

From memory I was invited to a wedding once (I haven't been to many weddings) and the gift registry was Grace Bros at the time and the cheapest gift was some ridiculous amount.

I purchased them my own gift.

A lot of Australians have a delusion of being well off.. But are way beyond their means.

Absolutely agreed:
Succinctly: the Federal, State & most Local Governments in Australia & the apparent flow on effect to the 'disciples"
I would like to see the real value of net worth of the average Australian.. I'm sure it would be a surprise to some..

our dad has always spoilt her, so it's no major surprise.

At least with this registry, each item is broken down into smaller amounts, so you can purchase part or all. But you lose that feeling of going out and choosing something nice, wrapping it, and gifting it.

Arrived yesterday at QT Hotel, Surfers Paradise around 2pm.

Saw the cleaners washing down an area of the driveway and there were cones up restricting access.

Find out later that they had a jumper from the 21st floor at 11am.

:( I'm guessing that didn't have a happy ending

Yes, it's not very good for business to walk to reception and pass a lifeless bodily heap or a puddle of blood, right.......

Gold Coast being Gold Coast...........

Politician?

In Australia? Not sure about that. Maybe in one of those Latin American nations it would make sense...

Must be the: Shh.... 12th one on GC for the YTD..
Heard the CSI franchise recently were scouting around for new destinations & the GC came up as a contender.
Sadly so..
But seriously..
I was just also trying to digest & understand the high suicide rate figures of youth in Singapore.. why o why??

No-one was happy with the outcome. The Organising Committee for our conference was meeting on the same floor and must have heard something - went out to the balcony. He must have jumped out a fair way as he hit a concrete balcony on the first floor and then the driveway. One of the arriving delegates unfortunately saw the body as it was being transferred.

If it's around teenage years or so, it could be academic pressure. A similar reason for said age bracket suicides exist in countries like Japan and Korea.

Quick Time..

Fast Check Out..

I actually worked in several of the major hotels in Surfers Paradise over the years & it was/is well reputed for sadly some guests to find a 'quick exit".
I often have seen bodies & or had to console shocked guests during the early hours.
Japanese were well renowned for this as well as several other guests, particularly of recent, mostly Australian domestic guests if the stats. serve correct.
It is often hushed, though it also happens in Hawaii, Las Vegas, & parts of Thailand so very often as well.

Younger or older than you?

Must be doing alright for themselves to have a loaded house on two years. Dentist?

Politician?

Younger sister?

Yep, younger (quite a few years too). And works in a similar profession to me. I think they had a very big helping hand with the house. Here I was offering them some second hand stuff for their kitchen etc only to find they were fully furnished with new and very nice stuff

What is it with hotels in Australia having balconies and opening windows on high floors?

I don't think it's restricted to Asian youth. Something like the Asiana crash could be reason enough for the crew (hope not!).

At my Place of Employment, we were warned about death by train & that each driver can expect to hit one person each in their career. In India, that figure is about 70.

I've come close (including so called friendly fire) on several occasions.

I don't envy anyone who has to see and/or clean up.
