Yep, younger (quite a few years too). And works in a similar profession to me. I think they had a very big helping hand with the house. Here I was offering them some second hand stuff for their kitchen etc only to find they were fully furnished with new and very nice stuff

Well my sister (younger, 2 years) did dentistry rather than specifically follow her heart or what not. But she does have her own place and well set up for herself. The folks did try to give her lots of things, but she ended up buying mostly all new stuff herself: bed, dresser, appliances...

Only thing I have on her is that I've seen more of the world. If that is something worth being proud of.

I don't think it's restricted to Asian youth. Something like the Asiana crash could be reason enough for the crew (hope not!).

Agreed, and I did think about that.

Japan and Korea are very much set in that way - a "death before dishonor" code. It's kind of dropping off but still relatively strong (especially as people get old). In Japan, suicide can occur from the student who failed their uni entrance exam, to the old CEO who failed to successfully guide their company.

A common suicide method in Japan is jumping in front of a train. The Japanese have tried to combat this by enforcing that the family of the dead must be responsible for the damage.

What is it with hotels in Australia having balconies and opening windows on high floors?

They will find a way regardless.. Hotel/Apartment availability, cheap rates & close proximity make it somewhat easier..
coughet & Pattaya are the same..
Perhaps Thais are not as 'pressured" for 'success" as the west though?

Yes they do find a way but you don't need a balcony or opening windows on 21st floor.

My friend committed suicide last year. I still do not understand how he was able to do it. That would be the furthest thing from my mind regardless of what was troubling me.

Yep.. 'tongue in cheek"
My kids are in tuition in asia after school as we speak.. :D

I didn't know that there was juku* in Australia. Hope you're not overpaying for it.

* No, juku is not tutoring or kumon...

A service failure when on the road to success.
However, I went to wear them and realised the fly was sewn shut on two pairs.
Very common for mass-produced Chinese-made garments to have both fly and pockets sewn shut - did you check the pockets?: simply done to indicate the garment is new and unused. I rarely buy clothes in China that don't have this.
Edit: Stitching is usually quite broad and very easy to unpick - snip one end and pull the other.
The rest of your customer "service" experience had me laughing out loud though - the woman's response reminds me of the old adage: "Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and remove all doubt."

Well I guess not allowing the jumbo to exit might be considered an enhancement. ;) :)
Never had anything much bigger to enhance than a Super Cub so I'm not sure what you mean about exiting the jumbo… I have been given a go around on short final a time or two though…:(

I can't fathom it either..
Sadly it is an all too common occurrence.. I also have several friends that left unannounced. I just wished I could have helped to prevent it somehow.

Perhaps your dad is waiting for you to make a commitment as well before helping! ;)

I love the Japanese railways & their way of life. I'm looking forward to coming home via Japan from America in February. I just wish that VA or one of their partners would fly direct instead of needing to go via SIN on SQ.

This is a strange game of football that my meal room colleagues are watching on Fox Sports. The advertising signs haven't moved once.

I don't have (or want) control of the remote. Beats the hours of wildlife shows that were on until someone who wasn't me changed the channel.

Arrived yesterday at QT Hotel, Surfers Paradise around 2pm.

Saw the cleaners washing down an area of the driveway and there were cones up restricting access.

Find out later that they had a jumper from the 21st floor at 11am.

Sad when things are that overwhelming. I saw a jumper (after the event, not during) about 5 years ago at the Rendezvous/Observation City at Scarborough in Perth. Was also likely a morning jump and TBH they didn't do a great job covering the body.

On a much nicer note, watched the Aust v Japan match last night. 3-2 loss to the Aussies but was looking like a 2-0 loss until mid-way through the second half when the Aussies scored 2 goals in as many minutes - but then let in the winning goal a minute later.

Oh well, onto the next World Cup as we haven't qualified for this one

In other interesting news, read this Virgin Australia job of the week in LinkedIn this morning:

Then I would consider him to be very sexist and old fashioned. Like the time he said that when I get married, he would have to "approve" of the groom. That attitude has no place in my life. Will be interesting to see what (if anything) I get for my upcoming birthday (assuming he graces me with his presence at all).
