Just checked....I have nearly 27 weeks' worth of sick leave:shock:. Clearly, i have not been "gaming the system" well enough....

I have 2.5 days sick leave available. That is the highest it has been since I started working for this company.

I lost ~26 days when I was sick in 2010. I am not a hero. Should it be on my conscience that I use my sick leave entitlement and dont save it for a rainy day?

P.S my brother had something like 170 days unused sick leave days when he went on compo. Had a lot of troubles and in the end they forced him to leave but luckily still paid him his sick days.

I think sick leave is for genuine illness so that being the case it isn't a matter of saving it for a rainy day. I think I've had about five days sick leave in my life. Unfortunately that happens in your own business.

When I used to work for the Guvenment where people never left, those that didn't have a "friendly" doctor would start working short weeks due to sickness where a certificate wasn't required, years before retirement. Strangely it was a trend for people to be unwell on Mondays and Fridays. :D

Yep, I had a retired union rep cab driver once who told me it's crazy to accrue more than 200 hours of sick leave. I left my last job after 8 years having use about 8.5 days of sick leave. My current sick leave balance is 254 hours.

If you're sick, you're sick. You should be able to take sick leave so you don't spread it around.

I know of several people whose sick leave bank can be counted in multiples of 1000, are over 60 & are still doing shiftwork. Many of them have 20+ years service. Should they lose those hours?

I hit my 20 years service near year. Not bad for someone who was only hired for 6 months at first.

Yes they should lose those hours it's not like holiday pay.

is sick leave factored into wages? as a consultant I pass on estimated sick leave to the client (based on 5 days potential sick leave divided by the ~220 working days per year)

115 linear centimetres, and 7kg per item is probably the most common.

NB: If you have a bag/case (as I do) that is 114.5 linear centimetres, it actually "looks" too big (and can comfortably hold a lot more than 7kg).

I normally try to buy bags around the 80-100 linear cm mark, with a long handle.

That's why I like BA, however I don't quite understand it .... as long as the bag fits, you get up to 23kg onboard!

At my Place of Employment, you get 15 sick days a year. The Absence Management Policy can kick in even if you use under your 15 days a year depending on the circumstances.

So if you've been there 20, 30, 40 & 50 years (in a couple of places), that's a lot of sick leave that can be built up.

As a person reaches retirement age, there would be a lot of people with niggling compliants & illnesses so there should be something in place to avoid the need to see Dr Holiday - there will be people who would not be sick per se but want to take a break, reduce their workload & reduce their leave that they'll lose.

And if that means that someone who is (say) 64 retires from work with full pay for a year or 2 to use up their leave that they haven't wasted, give someone else their job & let them enjoy their retirement.

Yes. I agree with that. That's my point. If you are sick then you don't ask yourself "should I save these for a rainy day?" You are sick so take sick leave.

Sick leave can be part of a salary package but unless stated you don't receive it as a payment if you leave. So yes, you would lose those hours. They aren't an entitlement unless you are - sick.

Flashback to the seventies, there's a bloke in the BKK J lounge wearing a beige safari suit with brown shoes. Even got the 70s style beard to go with it.

Not this time , and my beard is grey. Not at all 70s style.

I am proud to say I've never owned a safari suit. Probably the worst suit I ever wear is the one I got for my birthday. ;)

If only your name was Larry ;)

I have a theory on that one.

Work hard enough Monday-Thursday and you could be burned out by Friday.

Overdo it on the weekend and you will certainly not be fit for work on Monday.

I am hardly ever sick on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday but I can be sick on a Saturday and Sunday.

Go figure....

You could have had a color coded 70's fondue party - pick a number, pick a colour ... :p
I have expunged almost all memory of fondue parties....seem to remember copious quantities of red wine and much late-in-thenight port. Probably because the fondue tasted disgusting
