I never want to hear Magistrate Michael Rafferty or Snr Sgt Tom Croydon mention that he was on the couch watching Masterchef after popping a Vigara. Thanks for ruining my life, ABC1!

On my way home from Red Rooster, I saw a ute with a green P plate cube hanging off the back of it. I wonder if that would encourage people to use their plates?

Perhaps it's bad that I feel the need to open this post with a disclaimer: In absolutely no way am I defending the political situation in Germany in the 1930s and early 1940s with this post.

Just reading in the paper about a painting in the National Gallery of Victoria. Apparently, it has been positively linked back to the collection of a German industrialist Richard Semmel who fled german in 1933 and sold his artworks in Amsterdam. Apparently, the heirs to his estate are tracking down his collection and trying to get them back because they were sold off under stress. I just wonder what is the possible justification for that action in quasi-legal terms. The paintings were not stolen from him, at least that's not stated in the newspaper story. Yes, he was under stress but he did sell them and no doubt used the money to fund his move to the USA.

One of my great grandfather's owned all the property/shops on one side of Sandgate Road at Albion in Brisbane. But he had to sell them during the depression, no doubt under stress. I'm sure that I have no ability to go and claim back that property because he was forced to sell due to the circumstances of the time.

Anyway, I'm puzzled that his heirs can do what they are doing. Am I looking at this wrong or something?

I'm also struck by the situation of the heirs as well. Semmel actually died childless. The heirs are actually the descendants of his companion after the death of his wife. Sure they're the heirs to his estate, but I also wonder about their connection to the art collection.

stress in the depression is different to stress being pursued by the naz_s.

without seeing the actual legal claim, it is too hard to tell what cause of action the heirs think they have. it would be interesting to see.

a lot of factors may come in to play here. for example who bought the paintings? how much was paid? what happened in the lead up to the sale of the paintings? was the sale of the paintings conditional on some other action taking place (for example safe passage to usa)? was the sale of the paintings conditional on right to repurchase later?

All very interesting questions. Thanks for the thoughts. I guess it just strikes me that 1933 was rather early in the time period of things that would make a Jew leave Germany. I can't think he would have been pursued by the naz_s, but dodgy laws and such would have only just been coming in. Anyway, a complex situation, and good to have some other factors to consider.

Life is extremely interesting, varied and distressing. Yesterday, I caught up with a colleague that talked about his escape from Serbia (he is Croatian) and how he decided at a moments notice to drop/leave everything and start an extremely stressful, fearful and life threatening journey to safety.

20+ years on - he talks about property & life's collections that he left behind - as a secondary concern.

I knew that I hadn't gone SYD - LAX or vice versa 5 times in total! That that would mean that I'm still in the US (I'm not) or that I came back from America a different way (I haven't). For some reason, the Flight Tracker imported an extra LAX - SYD.

No way....

On Big Brother, Jasmine the VA FA has revealed that she's only had one boyfriend. She's totally cool!

If she does go back to work after her BB contract ends, she is going to get hit on by guys (and maybe some girls) so much.

I was actually considering what it would be like to audition this year but I was working on the day.

Watching The Layover about NYC.

There's a vegetarian in the most expensive hamburger joint in the city & all he can eat is a grilled cheese sandwich. But he does eat fish. *facepalm*

Another guy says there's no sushi places in NYC. The host says that the sushi is better in NYC than Tokyo.

Having done an International to domestic transfer at ORD yesterday it has gone to the top of the worst LOTFAP transfer experiences.LAX comes in at number 3 with MIA at 2.
Never had to queue to get into the queue to get into the lines before.

Repositioning LAX from number one to number three makes me feel warm inside seeing we go there regularly.
Australia may get closer to the top as our Government starts that long journey of "right sizing" those departments.

As opposed to every day that she works already? She probably is being hit on less in the house than an average day at work. Lol.

Hope it was a good return on the big bird! I'm off for a frolic in the snow, SLR in hand whilst mrs and miss bass_ke are still sleeping!

I've never been to LAX but decided to go back to the UK that way next year with my 12 y old son instead of the usual HKG route.

Managed to get 2 first class tickets for $948 + points in the Qantas A380 courtesy of the ATO :)

What can she do about it at work though compared to potentially 3 months in a house where no one can leave?
