I guess if we get a holiday* for a horse race, you can have one for a carnival.

*With the exception of shift workers :(
Melbourne used to have a half day holiday for "[Royal Melbourne] Show Day". This with a half day Holiday for "[Melbourne] Cup Day".

Some time ago, these were generally merge to just the one full "Cup Day".

It was a full day holiday until 1994 from want I recall.

Actually it depended on where you grew up, in the metropolitan area of Melbourne they were full day holidays. In regional areas they were sometimes half days or even no days with local show days being used in lieu.

Jeff Kennett got rid of Show Day.

And yes I have done shift work where they were just another day, in fact Show Day was even busier given I was working in the area.

I'd so get that statement on a t-shirt or a badge!

At my Place of Employment, they had to make NYE a holiday (in lieu of Bank Holiday) so people would turn up to crew trains. Arguably the biggest night for trains at single time - many people went sick. That stopped to a large degree when the holiday rate was applied.

Just today I had a sookylala to my union rep. They have all the union meetings at 1000 or 1100. I like to start 1500 & later. No way am I coming in at the earlier time for a union meeting then either go home (45 min average commute each way) or hang around for my shift.

But that's exactly what my union rep suggested. HAPPY RAIL SAFETY WEEK!

We used to have a holiday for Adelaide Cup. (Horse race). That's gone but I'm not sure what the new one is for. Any excuse'll do.

We have really creative names here. Summer Bank Holiday. Spring Bank Holiday. Yep, we had all those smart people at Cambridge and Oxford team together to come up with those names. ;)

We still had the Adelaide Cup public holiday this year - it was Monday 11th March. It just moved from later in the year to join Mad March. Next year Adelaide Cup day is scheduled for Monday 10th March. Has something happened

Yup. The race is in May. :)

Ok that's weird. I thought it was changed back to may because there were too many other things in March. Hmm. Ok, in 2015.

I am only basing March on my 2014 diary which could be wrong. Lets wait and see.
Personally I would prefer the holiday to be moved back to May.

Our union meetings are held at 9.30am and then a repeat meeting at 7pm to try to get as many people as possible. You could suggest that, as they may get a better turnout.

My former employer would roster people on for NYE, but start them half an hour earlier than a usual shift. This meant people worked the majority of their shift on NYE and not get paid a public holiday rate.

Anyone reporting sick would receive a visit at home to confirm the same.
