I've had a gnawing ball of nervousness in my stomach since a surprise phone call from my boss after 5 pm 3 fridays ago. Have just crunched some numbers and the relief is washing over me in waves. Dodged a major bullet on this one. Well worth the $25k for consultants, especially as I didn't have to pay for them. Let's hope their calculations match mine.

I'm also going to try to get 3 conference papers out of this and all.

Mal, you moved to the UK last year you don't need to keep reading Brisbane news,

I used to do weekly updates on my move to the west but I guess I found more interesting things to do, which includes not reading news from Brisbane. :p

Brisbane is still here slowly inching it's way into the 1980's.

I see your move has been much more successful than mine and you have only been there a few months....

Actually the 80s was the decade when Brisbane woke up and started becoming something more than a sleepy town. I know the entertainment on offer doesn't suit your criteria, however it is really hard to say that Brisbane is stuck in the 70s... For one, the prices aren't ;)

I know you see Brisbane one way and some others see it another way. I could never compare Brisbane to London (as an example). But you will never resolve the issue until you either accept Brisbane and its quirks. Or leave it. Take your pick. (And yes I realise work does create a dilemma in this situation).

Um, Brisbane join the 1980s about 6 months after Joh left office in 1987

Funny how things change quickly.

- Current lease expires end September
- Renewal sent early July for another 10 months
- Receive email this morning to vacate by end of lease as owner is thinking of selling

Creep. Now I have to find new place before I go overseas end September.

Or return home but airfares booked through end March.

And if you sign another lease you're committed for the period of that lease. I was lucky I was on a periodical tenancy when I finished up in CBR.

I know the conundrum you're facing and have absolutely no regrets at moving to MEL last year.

Hope it all works for you John.

Might be a circuit breaker you haven't been looking for.

FWIW I've had a few in my working life - made some big calls of the back of them and everything has flowed without missing a beat.

Best of luck working thru these things and remember - always back yourself!

At least it's a good time to be looking, it's a renters market at present.

Not quite what I needed right now but it is character building.

Melbourne would have been good. Biggest issue is there are no jobs in my specialty yet this company keeps bringing them in from off-shore at a fraction of the cost of an experienced local.

Hope to view 2 places next week and choose one of them. One around the corner from where I am now and the other is Park Regis.

Is a serviced apartment an option?

Is a serviced apartment an option?

Too expensive from what I have seen.

I prefer fully furnished studio and that appears to be around $330/week. Slightly more than ideal but not the end of the world.

Can get cheaper if sharing or not close to transport but neither of those is ideal either.

Have 2 inspections next week and hoping to secure one of them.

You should get under that at Kangaroo Point, and free ferry to the city.
75 Thorn St Kangaroo Point Qld 4169 - Apartment for Rent #411164903 - realestate.com.au

I saw that listing this morning.

My concern with Kangaroo Point is cost and travel time increase to/from airport and then travel time to/from work will also increase.

I prefer walking distance from Central or Roma St Station.

Same zone as the city and well serviced by bus or ferry (free and paid).

It is zone 2 whereas I am now in Zone 1.

But that is not the issue. I leave the Mill at 9:20am and I am in the office at Toowong at 9:40am. Similarly I leave the office at 7:50pm and I am the Mill at 8:15pm.

That time through the week is important to me.

Its 1 or 2, ie on the boundary, so heading into the city is same as being in the city. I understand now your preference, working in Toowong would make it more of a commute.

Good luck with finding a new place JohnK. That's one of the PITAs with renting.... No real security.
