Is that verifiable?

That would put the clock back to 1983 - so you could be playing the Beatles, The Who, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, early Elton John, Springsteen and just about every other FM radio staple.

Or put it another way: I'm thinking there's not a hell of a lot from 1983 onward I'd want to pay to play.... YMMV, of course.

How come Michael Jackson bought the Beatles back catalogue for millions then?

Not that it did him any good but I'm sure someone is benefitting from it.

I play music at my business - the radio. I play it for me (and my staff) Hello. it's a public broadcaster... anybody can listen to it, it's free to listen to. Why should I pay APRA? Didn't the station do that already? It's not as though I'm broadcasting some pirate ship radio. And I'm sure cutomers don't come to listen to the music, they come to do business. And so what if they hear the radio playing? Is it hurting anybody? Maybe I should throw a burqa over the radio  Next thing you know APRA will be walking past your house wanting to charge you if the radio can be heard by people walking past because it's considered a public broadcast.
Better tell Mrs Buzzard not to listen to the radio whilst gardening.... you never know who is listening.

I had a client who got into some trouble playing CD's at his salon recently - ended up setting him up with a deent internet connection and now he streams UK radio.

Yes APRA is genuine.I did not pay.And no Medhead I am not inconsistent as I want everyone out of my pocket.
Play music over 30 years old.No royalty payments required. That is the law.So not screwing some unfortunate young artist.Perfectly legal.

Sorry ddron, that's not Australian Law:

Copyright has expired if the creator died before 1 Januray 1955 and the material was published during his or her lifetime. If not, then the general rule for musical works and lyrics is that copyright lasts for the life of the creator plus 70 years – there are various exceptions to this rule, including:
• where a work was not published, performed or broadcast during the creatorʼs lifetime; and
• where something was published anonymously or under a pseudonym, and the identity of the
creator couldnʼt reasonably be ascertained.

Sound recordings
Copyright has expired in any sound recording made before 1 January 1955. If not, then the general rule for sound recordings made after 1955, is that they are protected for 70 years after the year in which it is first published.

From my perspective it seems the AFL were incredibly soft.

I haven't had time to read deeply into the news around the decision (in fact, didn't know it happened until I read AFF).

My guess is that the sport, AFL, is trying to avoid further disrepute. Had they come down heavy handed on a key club (i.e. imagine if it were GWS rather than Essendon), there would've been untold backlash and my suspicion would be that anger would not be directed in majority to the club itself.

Remember when the Melbourne NRL team was punished for breaching the salary cap? The punishment was quite "harsh" (according to some of the pundits; I had no problem with it in principle, notwithstanding bias) and some say it really impacted on the sport itself (and NRL was already having a hard enough time keeping good players and maintaining its popular image).

I think the AFL were hoping they could rule on this and let it just go away, i.e. "let's get on with it". If the relevant larger bodies argue otherwise, I don't know if the AFL can be implicated due to its apparent leniency.

So what happens if you stream a local radio station instead of actually having the radio on :?:

Do you still have to pay APRA

No idea - we didn't even look into local radio. We found international radio had no licensing rights in Australia and many had very few if not no advertisements. He wanted nightclub style music in his salon so we found a UK station (i forget which one) and a German one (Gay fm.de) that had no ads. His issue was he was playing to customers though. Don't know how it would work in an office. We have channel V on in my office. The music is no different either. If I were looking local I'd look at ABC.

Used to work at a shop that played JJJ, and got pinged.

You can get away with foxtel as long as you buy foxtel business (not residential) which costs a mint. You could produce your own music for less. Only places outside my office who I see with foxtel are TAB's for fox sports and racing.

Yes, it's the content and origination that matters, not how it gets there.

I think then the law has changed.I wasn't responsible for my rooms after 1998.APRA did have a go at doctor's surgeries in the 90s sometime. The AMA got an opimion that APRA did not have the power then and certainly they did not follow up after a second visit and politely being told no.

I am trying to book Aust Open tickets and there is no delivery option that does not include a minimum of $5.50
Cheapest is 5.50 for being texted to your phone
Dearest is reg mail $11.30 and $7 something for just holding it for you to collect.
Funnily enough I've just written to "Choice" with the same beef. Bought 2 tickets today for a concert through Ticketmaster. Chose the "print myself" option. My printer, my electricity, my paper, my ink - and a "Handling Charge" of $5.75. I've no idea how they can justify what is simply a rip off, in my opinion. I'll be interested to see what the consumer watchdog says.

Apartment hunting not looking so good.

How was J and MEL? Will have to catch up next time you are around - Last week was a bad week for me (too much hangover).

I can't believe how quickly having the radio on in my car accidentally left to the On position in the key area drains the battery. Flat in 10 minutes. I need a new car. :). And am now stuck in a car park for an hour.

The trip was awesome! All 4 VA flights were good - obviously better in J but I enjoyed every minute of it! Can't wait for the next time down there, especially considering I know more people there now. Not sure when the next trip will be, though. I've got a few days in Brisvegas in September & then my US/Asia trip Jan/Feb.

I've got all my photos up & my TR is done.
