The totally off-topic thread

I noticed yesterday on Facebook that some people were using it as a defacto Mothers Day for single mums.

I was brought up in a single parent household but despite that, I don't see why people need to hijack days for other purposes.

But if your mum acts as both your mum and your dad, then why shouldnt you do something nice? Father's Day isnt compulsory; my mum and I went out for coffee and had lunch together yesterday.

I think I'd consider it the day when you don't have to run around making breakfast for, providing lunch or dinner for, your parents. I don't begrudge this, but after mutterings from my husband who dislikes that Father's day ends up with running around to see his Dad, my Dad (and luckily for him, not usually my step-father as well!), he doesn't feel like it's still "his" day. I've tended to either be out of the country (with or without my child and spouse) or leaving the country on QF15 for most of the past 5 or so Mother's days. I've suggested to Mr Katie that maybe he'd like to leave the country for Father's day, so it can be all about him. Hopefully we can make it up to him for his birthday next week!

Father's day and Mother's day can be a lot like Xmas as you do heaps of running around.

Get out of the country.

It is easier

I guess I'm of a same theory as expressed earlier - if you do things every day rather than on one day only, that's a lot better. Of course, that's not always possible.

As a father - I'd be happy to scrub commercially contrived days out of the calendar.

We stick to the basics - birthdays, anniversaries, X-mas......the rest is life with it's ups & downs.

100% agree with the above. In my books its Birthdays and Anniversaries.

Same ol' same ol' entertainment announced for the AFL grand final. Can mow the grass right up to the first bounce without worrying about missing anything and the snags won't burn at half time!

Seriously AFL....

And that would be?.....
Anything is better than meatloaf. That was just awful.

Totally agree about Meatloaf - woeful.

This year we can look forward (or back) to Hunters & Collectors, Tina Arena and Mike Brady (Up There Cazaly).

Seen it all before, a couple of times.

Tina Arena knows how to belt out a tune at least.

I went to the '98 granny and saw the Hunters perform, was a pretty darn good day ;)

I'm going to see them next year, as they're touring with The Boss! I am looking forward to that show :D

Is Dragon still playing support to the Westgate Bridge? ;)

Next year, we must be due for The Black Sorrows, Farnsy, The Angels, Angry Anderson, Colin Hay, all the X Factor winners. Hey, I loved them all back then, and still sing along, but really....

Love Dragon too.

After watching Brian Ritchie and his lovely house on TV......my vote goes to Violent Femmes:cool:

VIOLENT FEMMES-Add it Up - YouTube

Seems perfect....

Don't shoot that thing at me......don't, shoot, shoot, shoot that thing at me:D

For somewhat obvious reasons, these incidents probably won't get reported in the media. But if 3 people died in Sydney in traffic crashes, you bet it would be.

There is some unwritten rule in the media that suicide is not reported.

Dragon are not the same since the sad loss of Marc Hunter

Christmas is the king of commercially contrived days .. so scratch that one!

I personally think mothers day and fathers day is a load of cough - and valentines day is the worst offender. Everyday should be those days.

I also particularly hate it when people try to put me on a guilt trip when I say its a load of cough too.."aww but its a reminder about the people that you love".. I don't need no cheesy Merchants event/reminder for that thank you very much and I think a token day for that kind of defeats the purpose

Yes the nub of the issue is the commercialisation of what were celebrations for a completely different reason. Just look at Christmas and Coca-Cola (& now all retailers), a Saints day turned into lover's lane for commercial gain etc. However, what others do with celebrations should not detract from whether you celebrate a particular day, or if you do celebrate the day, doing it in any way you wish.
