The AUD - will it go any higher in the short term (1-3months)?

[1 AUD currently buys around 0.72US, 5.6HKD, 67.8JPY]

So why am I still holding $US, $hkg and stg from my last trip? The least the currency could do is go DOWN for me until my next trip.

Seems to be too much on the topic of flying so i will talk about drinking-a topic I know only too well.As I am in dubbo working i was able early this week to go down to Orange to meet up with my best man and his son<my god son ,who has just got engaged(along with their partners and mrsdrron).
Now my god son is a winemaker so we partook of quite qa few of his various offerings.Started with a sparkling white-not meant to be a champagne style. It was Rolling pinot grigio/chardonnay.Certainly quite different to a champagne but very easy drinking and may suit those who dont enjoy champagne but would like to celebrate with a bubbly.
The other really good drop was the Rolling shiraz-2005.Fortunately I had previously tasted this in the JAL Flounge LHR and on CX.He tells me that QF and UA have also purchased this wine-do try it if you see it.
So there you have it-Drron the Godfather felt quite seedy yesterday!

IIRC, there are 3? Rolling, Climbing and one other (perhaps Falling Down, after consuming too much of the first two? :))...well recall the first meeting with one of them several years ago (Rolling, I think), and was a very drinkable drop!

Re: The next set of (fun?) questions...

The next set is coming soon...

Once again - answer any, many or all... the choice is yours...

21. Beer, Wine, Spirits or none?
22. Based on this version of the all-day dining at the SYD F Lounge, what dishes (up to 3 + 1 side dish) would you order? (You can assume you have 2 hours before departure, so no rush.)
23. What would the world be like if flight upgrades never existed/ceased to exist?
24. Describe how well you are able to sleep on board an aircraft.
25. In Economy class: aisle, middle or window seat?
26. In your opinion, which Australian capital city has the best domestic airport? And which has the worst?
27. A very weird (AFF?) genie appears and says: "On only one sector in the Australian domestic network of your choosing, I shall grant a guarantee that this sector will have 100% on-time performance and 0% cancellation rate, forever."

Which sector would you choose?
28. Describe the time when you were travelling with the most check-in luggage you have ever carried.
29. If travelling on longhaul international for a company/work purpose, would/do you prefer:
  • Travelling in J but being expected to work (and return) as soon as possible, or
  • Travelling in Y but having a day's allowance on either side (i.e. of arriving and departing) of your trip?
30. Describe a time in which you almost missed a flight (but still made it).

21. Usually wine for me. Don't really drink spirits.
22. Salt and Pepper Squid, Duck Liver Parfait sided with snap peas, Cheese platter. (I was thinking about the steak, but I can hardly bring myself to have steak anywhere else when we can get the best steak in QLD. ;))
23. Wouldn't make a lot of difference for me.
24. Fairly well - I can sleep on a train or bus.
25. On a sector I've never flown before, window, otherwise usually aisle.
26. Best is ADL; worst is PER.
27. SYD/PER.
28. When I was younger travelling with Mum and sister in Malaysia, the airport at KBR was still just a small building. We checked through KBR-KUL-BNE, all in Economy (no Enrich at that time). 20kg allowance a piece - we brought home over 80kg.
29. (a). A small price to pay in terms of timing and workload but travel in J.
30. HBA-MEL at the end of Oz Fest #5. I had other bookings that day (MEL-SYD on JQi, then SYD-BNE on QF), so had I missed this I would have been utterly sc***ed. HBA-MEL was a ~0605h departure, so had to be at check-in by 0520h (with bags). I was supposed to meet up with some others going to the airport at around 0440h. Turns out that I actually woke up at 0440h. I called the cab companies in a panic and one said, "If you want to go to the airport, you have to be ready now." (The other one said they didn't have enough cabs to offer me a service to the airport.) Of course I wasn't ready right then, so frantically opened up both my bags and literally ran around throwing everything into them. Quick shower and change; 9 minutes later called the cab company again and they said, "You're lucky; we have a cab available."
End result was that I unintentionally ditched on my taxi buddies so they had to pay more and I had to pay the exhorbitant fare on my own taxi, but I made the flight.

Iam quite a fan of the rolling/climbing wines - polished off a few recently :)

Re: The next set of "questions"...

31. Sightseeing: do you prefer tours or doing it alone?
32. If I spend money overseas, I usually (a) use cash I changed before leaving Australia, (b) use cash I changed after arriving at my destination, (c) use my credit card, (d) use traveller's cheques, (e) use a preloaded cash card/EFTPOS from my bank account (e.g. Cirrus, debit card)?
33. Hot weather or cold weather?
34. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan. Rank them in priority of wanting to visit/holiday.
35. You've booked a standard room at a hotel and on check-in you are offered only one of the following complimentary options - room upgrade to suite, daily breakfast (full hot range, not just continental), internet access - which one would you select?
36. Do you usually plan your holidays (a) far in advance, (b) fairly late, (c) at the last minute?
37. Do you usually pack your bags for holidays (a) fairly early, (b) quite late, (c) at the 11th hour?
38. Do you prefer very long (months) holidays, long (weeks) holidays or short (days) holidays?
39. Do you book holiday flights usually via (a) a travel agent, (b) direct via airline websites, (c) using generic travel websites (e.g. TravelKey, Webjet), (d) direct to airlines over the phone?
40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?

Re: The next set of "questions"...

31. Sightseeing: do you prefer tours or doing it alone?

Absolutely on my own. Tours are awful (both being on them, and if you're someone crossing paths with a big tour). Pretty much everywhere I go, I can find locals that are willing to point me in the right directions and I can get a feel of what it's like being there without being in the "bubble" of a tour.

Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard preloaded with money. Been wonderful. Previously it was using an account with Westpac that I used to open just to take advantage of the free global ATM alliance deal.

33. Hot weather or cold weather?

Cold - every time. You can put clothes on, but you can't always take them off!

34. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan. Rank them in priority of wanting to visit/holiday.

Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand.

35. You've booked a standard room at a hotel and on check-in you are offered only one of the following complimentary options - room upgrade to suite, daily breakfast (full hot range, not just continental), internet access - which one would you select?

Suite, probably, if I was going to be there for more than a night. Otherwise, I would go for the breakfast. I can get my own internet access usually.

36. Do you usually plan your holidays (a) far in advance, (b) fairly late, (c) at the last minute?

In advance - half of the joy is planning and thinking of all the possibilities and contacting friends to see when they are available and coming up with the routing!

37. Do you usually pack your bags for holidays (a) fairly early, (b) quite late, (c) at the 11th hour?

I'm always packing less than 3 hours before going to the airport, despite my plans to do otherwise all the time!

38. Do you prefer very long (months) holidays, long (weeks) holidays or short (days) holidays?

Long trips of 4-6 weeks are my favourite - they allow me a RTW trip with 12-15 stops.

39. Do you book holiday flights usually via (a) a travel agent, (b) direct via airline websites, (c) using generic travel websites (e.g. TravelKey, Webjet), (d) direct to airlines over the phone?

A travel agent, after ensuring that all the sectors are available. I usually just email it to them and deal with everything over email/phone.

40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?

It does hit me badly. I find that taking melatonin as most of the studies in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews helps a lot. There's good evidence that it does reduce the symptoms, but only when used effectively.

31. Sightseeing: do you prefer tours or doing it alone?
Most definetely alone.couldn't think of anything worse than what my sister did last year-
a 30 day Greyhound tour of the USA,up at 6.30 am every day,on the coach, travelling for
hours at a time, being told when you can eat etc,not for me I'm afraid.

Combination of (b) and (c).
33. Hot weather or cold weather?
Cold, for reasons given by previous member.
34. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan. Rank them in priority of wanting to visit/holiday
Japan,Korea,Vietnam,Malaysia,Thailand,China.
35. You've booked a standard room at a hotel and on check-in you are offered only one of the following complimentary options - room upgrade to suite, daily breakfast (full hot range, not just continental), internet access - which one would you select?

Deffo the full hot breakfast.
36. Do you usually plan your holidays (a) far in advance, (b) fairly late, (c) at the last minute?

(b) I usually decide about three weeks before I go.
37. Do you usually pack your bags for holidays (a) fairly early, (b) quite late, (c) at the 11th hour?
I usually pack, for any trip, about two nights before.
38. Do you prefer very long (months) holidays, long (weeks) holidays or short (days) holidays?

Short,I get bored doing nothing and find myself wanting to go back to work after about 5 days.
39. Do you book holiday flights usually via (a) a travel agent, (b) direct via airline websites, (c) using generic travel websites (e.g. TravelKey, Webjet), (d) direct to airlines over the phone?
(a) I always use an agent
40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?
Fairly susceptible but recover quite quickly.

31. Sightseeing: do you prefer tours or doing it alone?

Both, mainly self - on !10% of initial visits to a location I may find tour to get bearings but rarely on subsequent visit

Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard preloaded with money. Been wonderful. Previously it was using an account with Westpac that I used to open just to take advantage of the free global ATM alliance deal.

33. Hot weather or cold weather?

Can't really say, if warm climate only it reduces luggage weight. No real issue, to paraphrase Descartes "I travel therefore I'm here!".

34. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan. Rank them in priority of wanting to visit/holiday.

Japan, Thailand, China, Malaysia, Korea, Vietnam.

35. You've booked a standard room at a hotel and on check-in you are offered only one of the following complimentary options - room upgrade to suite, daily breakfast (full hot range, not just continental), internet access - which one would you select?

I would go for the breakfast.

36. Do you usually plan your holidays (a) far in advance, (b) fairly late, (c) at the last minute?

(a) far in advance

37. Do you usually pack your bags for holidays (a) fairly early, (b) quite late, (c) at the 11th hour?

I am always ¾ packed; I have a prepared travel kit awaiting fulfilment. I finish off a few hours before departure to ensure items I wish to take/wear are availabl/charged/laundered etc.

38. Do you prefer very long (months) holidays, long (weeks) holidays or short (days) holidays?

Long trips are my favourite, being Self employed reduces such opportunity. e.g. My last ATW has been broken into 3 separate trips (June, April, May)

39. Do you book holiday flights usually via (a) a travel agent, (b) direct via airline websites, (c) using generic travel websites (e.g. TravelKey, Webjet), (d) direct to airlines over the phone?

(b) & (d)

40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?

I am rarely, if ever, "jet lagged" per se. I have a basic 6 hours in 24 need for sleep; If I get this I'm fine, if not I am tired and need sleep. This is irrespective of where I am ..

40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?
31. Depends where I go. I would prefer a tour but I am comfortable exploring on my own although I am slightly lazy and may end up in the hotel room all day drinking instead of sightseeing
32. A combination of cash changed at destination and Wizard Mastercard
33. Somewhere in between but mainly hot climates
34. Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia. Not sure whether I want to go to China, Korea or Japan although Mission Hills may be a possibility in the future.
35. Daily breakfast! A room is a room is a room....
36. Try to plan as far in advance as possible but I have also been known to make last minute decisions
37. Mostly pack at the 11th hour. Coming back is OK because my clothes never the leave the suitcase unless I am wearing them. Clean clothes at the bottom, dirty clothes at the top with undewear in plastic bags in between
38. Depends on where I am going. If I am going to Europe then ideally I would want 4-5 weeks, in SE Asia 10-14 days is more than enough and in Oceania <7 days
39. I have used all options at various stages. I prefer to book on my own if possible
40. Only on return to Australia and it usually takes 3-4 days recover. The east-west travel instead of west-east travel is a myth as I get jet lagged on North-South travel. I think it all depends on adrenalin levels....

Re: The next set of "questions"...

31. Sightseeing: do you prefer tours or doing it alone?
Much prefer alone but will do a day tour if the journey involves lots of driving on the wrong side of the road eg going from San Jose to the rainforests in Costa Rica.
Mixture of a, b and c.
33. Hot weather or cold weather?
Hot but cold as well!
34. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan. Rank them in priority of wanting to visit/holiday.
China (cos haven't seen much of it), Japan, ('cos love it) Korea, (cos haven't been), Vietnam ('cos love it), Thailand ('cos seen lots) Malaysia (ho hum)
35. You've booked a standard room at a hotel and on check-in you are offered only one of the following complimentary options - room upgrade to suite, daily breakfast (full hot range, not just continental), internet access - which one would you select?
If two of us - breakfast, if alone internet
36. Do you usually plan your holidays (a) far in advance, (b) fairly late, (c) at the last minute?
a. Usually planning 4 or 5 ahead. It's the cough retentive in me.
37. Do you usually pack your bags for holidays (a) fairly early, (b) quite late, (c) at the 11th hour?
b
38. Do you prefer very long (months) holidays, long (weeks) holidays or short (days) holidays?

39. Do you book holiday flights usually via (a) a travel agent, (b) direct via airline websites, (c) using generic travel websites (e.g. TravelKey, Webjet), (d) direct to airlines over the phone?
b.
40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?
very susceptible - now have given up and just drink and eat and do all the other wrong things :D

Re: The next set of "questions"...

31. Sightseeing: do you prefer tours or doing it alone?
First visit tour is always good but next time alone, although if they speak English; like they do in London; well I never been on a tour there, I guess it can really depend on the language a bit as well, as I have never done a tour in the US either.
(a) and (c)
33. Hot weather or cold weather?
Cold weather first but I think I have a 60/40 ratio.
34. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan. Rank them in priority of wanting to visit/holiday.
Japan, (been there want to see more); Malaysia; Thailand; China; Korea; last Vietnam(no real interest)
35. You've booked a standard room at a hotel and on check-in you are offered only one of the following complimentary options - room upgrade to suite, daily breakfast (full hot range, not just continental), internet access - which one would you select?
Breakfast: yes its hard without internet but I think I could survive.
36. Do you usually plan your holidays (a) far in advance, (b) fairly late, (c) at the last minute?
I think about them ages out; but probably do the organising at the last minute.
37. Do you usually pack your bags for holidays (a) fairly early, (b) quite late, (c) at the 11th hour?
(b)
38. Do you prefer very long (months) holidays, long (weeks) holidays or short (days) holidays?
Short only because I am a business owner; well my dad keeps reminding me of this, he doesn't want to work forever.
39. Do you book holiday flights usually via (a) a travel agent, (b) direct via airline websites, (c) using generic travel websites (e.g. TravelKey, Webjet), (d) direct to airlines over the phone?
Depends on the trip; short internet with the airline; longer usually TA,
40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?
Well I got to the UK on a recent trip without any jetlag problem; but I was screwed once I continued onto the USA; I guess as the trip starts I usually deal with it fine; I think as the trip is longer or the last part then it gets worse.

Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard preloaded with money. Been wonderful. Previously it was using an account with Westpac that I used to open just to take advantage of the free global ATM alliance deal.

I had to laugh - you copied my answer word for word!

31. Sightseeing: do you prefer tours or doing it alone?

Alone is preferable, unless time is short and I'm in a new place. Tours are far too rushed.

Preloaded cash card (NAB Gold, Wizard Mastercard), but also credit cards for purchases

33. Hot weather or cold weather?

Cold definitely, if that's the only choice.

34. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan. Rank them in priority of wanting to visit/holiday.

China, Vietnam (before the tourists change it), the others in no particular order.

35. You've booked a standard room at a hotel and on check-in you are offered only one of the following complimentary options - room upgrade to suite, daily breakfast (full hot range, not just continental), internet access - which one would you select?

Depends on the hotel and the location, but generally I'd take breakfast, then room upgrade.

36. Do you usually plan your holidays (a) far in advance, (b) fairly late, (c) at the last minute?

Far, far in advance.

37. Do you usually pack your bags for holidays (a) fairly early, (b) quite late, (c) at the 11th hour?

Quite late.

38. Do you prefer very long (months) holidays, long (weeks) holidays or short (days) holidays?

Long (weeks) preferred but I'd like to be able to do long (months).

39. Do you book holiday flights usually via (a) a travel agent, (b) direct via airline websites, (c) using generic travel websites (e.g. TravelKey, Webjet), (d) direct to airlines over the phone?

Flights via a travel agent after doing a fairly thorough search on the web.

40. How susceptible are you to jet lag and its effects/symptoms?

Not badly affected, but certainly getting worse as I get older.

I had to laugh - you copied my answer word for word!

Oh, I didn't mind at all - I guess we are all looking for the best deals out there.

I'm lamenting the death of Washington Mutual in the US, too - I used to get money out of their ATMs with no surcharge.

Interesting observation waiting for the 6:54pm train in Toowong yesterday. The train was delayed and there was no announcement. A train finally arrives at 7:16pm but the screen is flashing this is the 7:22pm service. I am guessing that the earlier train service was cancelled. Train leaves straightaway and eventually had to wait 5 or so minutes before being able to arrive at Roma Street station.

If you had arrived at Toowong after 7:16pm waiting for the 7:22pm train service you would be waiting for the 7:55pm train service instead. I am sure the same would have occured at the stations before Toowong and then Auchenflower and Milton. This is not the first time this sort of incident has occured. What a way to treat customers? Well done QR Translink....

How do these companies survive? You can never rely on public transport. Back in Sydney I used my car most of the time and in the past have refused jobs in the city to avoid having to rely on public transport. I have no choice in Brisbane. If I had a choice they would not be getting my business....
