Don't get me wrong I will never get sick of holidays. In fact I am almost ready for another lengthy holiday that could just about take me through to retirement. :-|

My statement was more along the lines I don't really want to fly to get to a holiday destination. I am sick of airports, lounges, delays, flights etc. Everything feels stale. Some may understand my feelings having to commute every week....
JohnK,

I understand the sentiment but you have to admit that flying is on most occasions still better than walking, swimming or driving to your destination. From the job perspective I'm well and truly over what I'm currently doing but I now have only a nominal 13 weeks to go before putting my feet up so I'm currently planning the best way to tackle a trip of some sort.

oz_mark has got a good idea on this.

If I have to travel for work, then generally if the flying rate gets intense then what pretty much obviously follows is that feeling of "getting sick of this". For my part, I haven't had a real episode where flying around for work purposes has gotten that insane. My first taste was my last trip over to the west where I had 5 flights in 5 days with full days on site. For some people that's still a pretty lame rate. But throw in the pressure of work and then it starts to stack up. (Work didn't always plan out, the last thing you need is your PER-BNE to be delayed and the QP runs out of decent booze, food and/or chairs. That kind of thing.)

So it can be understandable why some of us start to get sick of flying - aircraft (even premium class), air commuters, lounges (even premium lounges), etc. - because it may not be the flying but the additional pressures we face around that. When flying starts to go awry then the whole issue just intensifies.

For others here, flying for work also places some pressure on their families, so again the "last thing you want is a delay", etc.

Now compare this to a holiday where there is no external work pressure and (hopefully) the whole family is along for the trip. Even if there are delays, as long as they are not exceptionally bad, because there is no external pressures to cause exacerbation, we tolerate it. (Even better if travel insurance kicks in successfully.)

Still, flying is one of the easiest and quickest ways to get from A to B.

Worst comes to worst, have you considered cruising? Slower, more expensive, but a new perspective on travel (provided you're seaworthy)....

Just spent a nice relaxing weekend in Cairns with a short arvo in Port Douglas. Beautiful views. Nice swim at Mossman Gorge (never mind that there was nearly a QF009 crash landing in FNQ incident...:p). Nightlife in Cairns limited but lively and vibrant. But what's even better was the fantastic and fabulous company of turtlemichael +1, and Platy over some tipples, an amazing Michelin-quality meal and some great convo. Thanks folks! :D

What's the story with Mon Jan 26?

It is a public holiday here in WA, but apparently other states are working? I an confused..

I think maybe the Monday not being a holiday is April 25th/27th, ANZAC day, which falls on Sat (25th). Monday is a public holiday only in WA and QLD currently, and the RSL have teir knickers in a knot. Not sure why- we can still celebrate/remember them on Sat while having a day off to placate the unions.

The lounges still have a small novelty value, but only just.
Maybe it is because I did not have such a great holiday and wanted to get home as quickly as possible but the lounges are really really boring.

<begin rant>

I turned up to BKK airport just over 3 hours before my CX flight. Checked in and got through immigration fairly quickly. Head over to QF First class lounge but is closed so over to QF business class lounge for 30 minutes until First class lounge opens. Bored quickly so head over to First class lounge but no boarding calls for CX flight so head over to CX lounge which is overflowing. My flight is delayed for over an hour so swap between CX and QF lounges getting bored very quickly. I would have been much better off strolling through the terminal browsing the various trinkets on sale.

I should have had 2 hours in HKG airport to relax before my BNE flight, but thanks to the delays and the useless signs in HKG airport, I managed 15 minutes in the Pier lounge. It is a while since I have been here so I look for the bar but could not find it. Ask the staff politely where I can get a drink and she snaps at me that I should order from her and she will bring it to me. Sit down for a few minutes with my water and vodka and orange when boarding had started for QF098. Head back to the bar and ask for another vodka and orange and again she snaps at me that I should go and find a seat and she will bring it to me. So I sit at the bar and have a final drink before heading off to board QF098.

[/end rant]

AFAIK, The First Class CX lounges at HKG do not have self serve bars ... It's generally just a matter of looking "thirsty" and an attendant will happily come over and assist - of course you may have scored one having a bad day. :-|

I normally have no trouble getting a drink - the hard part sometimes is remembering how many I have had ;)

I guess as I have transited HKG so many times in the past 2 1/2 years that I know the place like the back of my hand now - it is such a comfortale and familiar place for me...

Of course, JohnK was also at BKK - of which the CX lounge I have no experience ...

(Although I believe there is no separate F section)

It is 16 months since I was last at HKG and I found the signage terrible. I had forgotten the exact locations of the 2 CX lounges and with poor signage I walked from ~gate 40 past gate 32 and almost down to the Wing and then I realised I was in the wrong place so walked back past gate 32 up to gate 63 to the Pier.

By the way there was notices all over the place that they are trialling new signs, or lack thereof, in HKG airport and for people to provide feedback. I guess they would not be interested in my feedback....

Most Oneworld lounges, including Louis Tavern CIP lounges, in BKK airport are average in my opinion. The CX lounge in Concourse G is a combined First and Business Class Lounge although the CX lounge in Concourse D does have a separate First Class section which is small anyway. If I had to choose I would say the QF/BA Business Class lounge is the better of the 3 lounges in Concourse G.

I much prefer to have self serve drinks rather than a waiter coming around taking drinks orders....

There is a dress rehearsal tomorrow night in preparation for the BNE monthly drinks gathering later on in the month.

The venue is The Mill Hotel Bar & Restaurant. It is located on Wickham Terrace, on the corner of Bartley St, next to Brisbane Private Hospital, opposite the old Tower Mill and ~100 metres from Jacobs Ladder....

The dress rehearsal will start ~5:00-5:30pm and should be finished ~8:30pm or whatever time the thirst dies down.

Confirmed attendees are

Everyone is welcome to come along and any excuse will do. Yes I know the Amex promotion is over but the bar does accept cash....

I can pop in for a drink or few. Not sure if I'll be going to the monthly one this month though.

Is there a date for the February gathering yet ? I'm in Brisvegas again 23/2 - 27/2 (yes I know its poor planning and I should have gone for the preceding weekend but they're the free Amex Ultimate card flights).

Richard.
