With 40C+ you can at walk/pace/run with ease from the AC in the house/office/mall to the car and VV.....doing that in -40C and you'll probably find yourself in hospital with broken bones from falling on icy roads/footpaths/steps. Montreal hospital was overflowing with these cases when we were there.

The continual on with the layers....off with the layers is a PITA.

You can say that again ! The trouble with North East Coast America at this time of year - the over-heating of the buildings, whether it be shop, office or residential.

When our son lived in NYC - his apartment building heating was like an oven - you could walk around in a T shirt and shorts - with snow outside !

It's the same in the UK, annoying. Especially as they haven't adjusted for the fact we're still getting 10+ degree weather right now.

I was in Gothenburg on the weekend and they had it downpat. -6 outside but when you went inside .. it was warm enough to know you weren't cold anymore, but not so warm that you were too hot. It was the first place I've ever noticed this perfection!

Hope his knee fixes quickly. Have heard knees can be tricky, but I'm sure he knows more than me what needs to be done in the way of exercise to regain full movement.

Now he can join me and lots of others who have to remove everything before going through security screening, and then having a 'pat' down. Its a PITA!!! :(

I was in Niseko recently -20C with 2M of powder in the week we were there. It would have been nice if it snowed only during the night as snowboarding in blizzards is hard work but still fun.

One thing was highlighted though and that is that Australia is in the Cretaceous period when it comes to broadband speed. As only 1 tv channel was English speaking I thought I'd download a HD film to my Mac from iTunes, normally takes about 2 hours + in Au 15 minutes in Japan from a rental apartment which is presumably on the cheapest plan in Japan.

We are living in the dark ages here I kid you not :(

Density of population and country size places a large part in that....

Totally agree, and I've found this all across Asia.

In Thailand, China, Korea etc the internet is blindingly fast and very cheap often free in hotels.

Still one day we might have a national broadband network which could offer such a service. Or maybe not. :(
