Times are tough when the Easter Bunny has to moonlight!

Like it when people who have to work get into the spirit of things.

No way I'm working in a bunny suit today. Making thesis corrections. :-|

Agree absolutely, and the precision with which the whole system is run is incredible. There seemed to be a some glitches though, as a few Shinkansen services were cancelled (equipment going tech?), and one line had major delays due to 'a passenger fall' - onto the track? maybe.

Reliability | Central Japan Railway Company

What is that, 36 seconds per train? Across 323 services a day. Not bad.

Damn windows updates. They mess our server up every few weeks. Now waiting for it to do its thing.

How does it mess them up? Apart from possibly slowing them to a crawl or temporarily locking system files?

Finished making waffles. And the chicken enchilada soup is slow cooking :D

I see you're a very good boyfriend :)

Chicken enchilada soup sounds interesting.

Sometimes when it reboots after an auto download it resets the modems. And they don't start properly.

I just know if there are going to be issues it will be after an auto download. Currently it seems to be in a spiral of download update restart download update restart cycle and can't get it itself out of it. It downloaded emails for a minute then went straight to reboot. And now it's reconfiguring windows updates. Again.

Ok. I think it's finally done and stable. When I arrived it was "stuck" on the "do you really want to restart computer" so it hadn't restarted after the first update. I can go home now.

Can you just configure Windows Update for manual installation of updates (i.e. either do not inform of new updates, or better, either inform of new updates but prompt to download, or download new updates but install manually)? That may work better, then all you would need to ensure is you actually conduct a check and installation of updates on a regular basis, or when noted security alerts are brought to your attention.

Of course - they were on my birthdays.

Sorry, like Barry - no tasting notes. Damn they were good though. Have my 50th coming up in a few years, wondering whether I'll go and buy my birth year bottle or just drink another of the 3 Grange I have left.

Which years are they? My birth year is 1959... (really)

But I have never met Barry O'Farrell.
well...
I don't ever remember meeting Barry O'Farrell.

Yeah, I've asked our IT external consultants to do this, numerous times. And they come back with all the usual security blah blah nonsense but it would save a lot of issues. I'll try again. :p

Hmmmm... I was thinking you all did this in-house. Right.

I can see where the IT guys might be hesitant to do this. They can't exactly make you absolve them of any problems due to security risks if it so happens that a security update which was delayed in installation brings down your server.

Alternatively, I'm sure there's also a way to delay installation of updates (or automatic installation of updates) until a certain time, e.g. 1am in the morning. Of course, if you run a 24/7 business where the server is expected to be up at almost all times of the day, that could still be a cause of issues.
