The totally off-topic thread

I was slowly driving my husband's shiny new Merc out of our underground carpark after a few hour's work one Sunday, not slowly enough obviously. Looked one way not the other and crammed into an absolute s**tbox old commodore, not a single panel undinged. In fact you couldn't even tell which ding I did! About 6 young blokes piled out, and I thought - oh they are going to really try it on as it was totally my fault. No way they had insurance driving a total bomb. And I'm driving a flash car, naturally it'd be insured, cos we are responsible grown ups and that's what we do. I got out exclaiming 'oh my gosh, oh my gosh, my husband''s going to kill me, he will be absolutely furious" :evil:That last bit was true.....anyway they all got cheerfully back in the car saying 'don't worry love' and off they went. Phew.
JohnK I do think people try it on, and if they know you're insured will try harder. It's an anonymous insurance company and they have heaps of dough. How about telling the woman you can't claim through your insurance company and she may back off. Even if she doesn't she may then not try to inflate her repair bill. Maybe.

My only experience was when someone crossed 2 lanes of traffic to then cut me off so I slammed on the brakes and into the back of him. Chinese chap with a Chinese DL, no insurance, etc. Fortunately my insurance company happily found him at fault for his illegal actions, so my car was repaired under my insurance but no liability on me so my no claim bonus was fine, all repairs done and no worries. It probably didn't help his case that I don't think he really knew what was going on and he went to my insurance company and opened a policy with them the day after the accident perhaps thinking that would sort him out .... it did at least mean they had all his details, easy!

Any half decent forensic crash examiner can tell from the impact zone who ran into whom (and has any statements and claim form information to use).

The impression I got from the claim consultant I spoke to is the majority of car park incidents are hard to put blame on either party but in the majority of cases the person reversing is at fault. They want to avoid court cases and much easier to settle and ask you to pay excess.

It will be interesting to see what happens if I have to put in a claim.

You'll just pay the excess. And not hear of the outcome. Their assessor will know what to do about previous damage. Surely your parents have had their insurance long enough that one claim won't impact? Our Insurance has no penalty for a claim for life.

The excess seems a bit steep!

So you are saying it is OK for me to now say that dad was stationary when she hit the car as I misunderstood what dad was telling me?

It is a your word against theirs situation but even if liability is 50/50 we still lose $950 excess even though there is no damage to the car that needs repairing.

There are a lot of low life scum out there.

It is insured in my name and I have Rating 1 for Life. From memory NRMA was 2 claims per year and no impact but with Budget you are allowed 2 claims in one year and another in the next and then you lose it with a further claim.

From memory the basic excess was $600-$700 and I increased the excess to reduce the premium. I will back myself everytime except for freakish accidents such as this one where the other person is clearly at fault.

The last time my brother and I had an accident was in 1999 about 1 week apart and neither was our fault. I think I have had 1 claim and from memory that was in 1994.

Here is the best little item I have added to my travel accessory bundle in quite some time:

It is dentist bib clip rubber chain thingy - dentist put one on me 2 or 3 weeks back to hold up bib and it hit me like a ton of bricks - I just gotta have one of these to hold up the napkin during meal times to avoid all spillage stains - used it for first time on MEL-SIN-PVG last week then PVG-SIN-MEL on Tuesday - PERFECT. If you can handle sitting up in F or J looking like a tool I thoroughly recommend them. :D

They don't have the button hole in the napkin in J or F?
Yes on SQ they do - some airlines don't have napkins with buttom holes.

Have you flown SQ medhead? Sleeper suit provided in F has zip up neck section - no button. SQ J no sleeper suit provided - I always BYO PJ's whichever airline I fly - any flt over 3 hrs or so I always change - my PJ's consist of long or short legged tracky and t-shirt - no button - understand?

Several airlines, including CX and (IIRC, MH) provide small napkin pegs for the same purpose.

Love it!! I can handle looking like a tool at meal time to keep my shirt pristine. Nothing worse than getting off a plane with stains down your front - then you look like a tool!

There are also times where one has multiple sectors back to back - ie MEL-SIN then 2 or 3 hrs in TPR then SIN-NRT then 1hr off plane then NRT-LAX - or MEL-SIN-FRA-JFK or MEL-SIN-BCN-GRU - last thing you want is your in flight attire to cop a right 'ol sloppin' on 1st sector then you gotta tolerate it following 2 sectors - keep in mind that simple basic medical analogy - 'prevention better than cure!' :D - but YMMV.

Sourced from and cost?
