I was told today that my position is being made redundant.

Depression? Don't want to be object of pity? Would you go see them if they hadn't lost their job?

The person I am talking about has been unemployed the whole time I've known them (about 6 years) so the unemployment & the lack of money isn't a new thing.

He said that he didn't have the money to come from the south west to London. I get that. So I offered to go to him instead - after all, what's a 2 hour train trip each way to me if I've flown halfway around the world?

The attitude back was "Unless you like touristy stuff & old buildings, there's nothing here for you."

I would have thought that a chance to hang out with me would have been enough but clearly not.

Oh well.

Sorry to hear that Shelf. I hope at least any package you are offered allows you to re-establish yourself quickly.

Hopefully the package gives you some breathing space, don't delay looking for alternatives as it's very tight out there for jobs. At least it's a good time of the year if there is such a thing, four months later and it might be a different story.

Given I am a contractor, I've never been in the privileged position of being made redundant, the contract just ends, thanks for coming. It's never much fun to be honest because it's difficult not to take it personally, and it clearly is to the person losing their job.

Hard to give you specific guidance except that you do obvious need to move past it, many do and move on to better things (and I know plenty who regard it as one of the best things that happened to them). Not always easy I know but try and remain positive, while it can be difficult, negativity will eventually get to you if you don't. Do be flexible, you do need to find something to do, it doesn't have to be for ever though but staying at home moping will never help.

Good luck and don't forget your family and friends, they will help you get through it so try and not to piss them off too much when you are feeling down.

Sorry to hear. If you get a good payout though that should make you feel better?

Well cricket can appear complicated, so here's a guide on how it's played

I know exactly how you feel, Shelf - I was laid off in late April; I've got good work experience, but in a very specialist band of Civil Engineering, so can't just walk into another job. It's the first time I've been unemployed since I started work in August 1991. Very scary stuff, to be honest.

My advice: be positive, be confident, and stay busy - either looking for work, helping out family (older or younger), or with a hobby. But be pragmatic, as you just don't know how long it will be before you are earning again.

And good luck!

My fiancé was made redundant the day before we were due to settle on our first home.

We took it as an absolute blessing, something to be embraced and enjoyed rather then dwelled on. It gave us a financial kick start while allowing for her to undertake new challenges!

We will all feel differently. Hopefully something good comes your way soon Shelf.

I'm with you Pushka.

Whilst I haven't experienced redundancy, I've had a lot of clients go through it. For some, it's the kick they need to change if they aren't happy with job/industry
