Mobile phone numbers follow the standard rules. Country code, drop the 0, next number is area code, then 8 digits for the phone number.

Huh? Australian mobile phone numbers don't have an area code. An Australian mobile number written with the country code would be +61 400 000 000.

Is anyone silly enough to have that number? I use that number a lot with dummy bookings.

Umm, Yes they do - 04. Like i said country code 61, drop the 0 - 4 then 8 numbers 12345678

My various numbers:

mobile 04 1xx_ xx_X
Home 08 8xx_ xx_X
Work 02 9xx_ xx_X

There is a very clear pattern that all numbers fit.

Some companies are just stupid. Here's a recruitment situation I was in recently:

- recruiter calls to suggest a role (I had already seen it, but submitted my CV to the company generically to see if they would match me - and they did). We discuss what the role is going for, and for simplicity sake, let's imagine it was 12000 - 16000 (circa 15000). We agree to put me forward at 15k.
- Another recruiter also is advertising the role, and had similar figures.
- I go for 1st interview, then get called back for 2nd. Company likes me. Company decides to offer me 8k based on flimsy excuses (previous staff hire, my old salary). They seemed surprised that recruiters were advertising the range they were advertising.
- I push back, advise that 10K plus is my minimum. Reject the role and advise I would accept 10K. Offer withdrawn.
- Get advised that someone who asked for 5K, but was knocked out at 1st round is now being called back for 2nd round.
- See recruiter re-advertising the role at 5-15k.
- Recruiter #2 is still advertising role at old rates.

Sydney siege: backtrack over post that inspired #illridewithyou

GAPS have appeared in the story that inspired the #illridewithyou Twitter phenomenon.
University lecturer Rachael Jacobs had originally posted a status on Facebook, explaining how she offered to protect a woman who felt uncomfortable wearing her hijab.
According to her story, Ms Jacobs had seen the woman beginning to remove her scarf, and ran after her, saying “Put it back on. I’ll walk with you.”
However Rachael Jacobs has admitted that she “editorialised’’ parts of her story.
“Confession time. In my Facebook status, I editorialised. She wasn’t sitting next to me. She was a bit away, towards the other end of the carriage,” she wrote.
Ms Jacobs now says she wondered if she even needed to help.“She might not even be Muslim or she could have just been warm!,” she wrote.

Here's another thing I notice compared to home.

Who here (in Australia) buys supermarket branded products? And I mean not only brands like You'll Love Coles or Woolworths Select, I mean some of the bargain basement supermarket brands like Black and Gold, Home Brand, etc.?

Supermarket branded products here also have a range from budget to more expensive, but I tend to buy from the budget range. That's lots of things from edibles, milk and household products. Normally supermarket branded products get a bad rep in Australia even if they are cheaper, but over here I find that the products are pretty good. Food is edible, the quality is at least reasonable, and household products (like washing detergent) work pretty well.

If you bought supermarket branded budget products in Australia, people conclude either you are poor, tight or aren't interested in quality.

Comes down to business model.

When Adi came to OZ they initially sought level 2 or perhaps level 3 product from manufacturers. Level 1 = same quality as produced for brand name (cereal for example).

WoW, Coles etc would go for as low as level 5, 6 or 7.

Some of the difference (for the product) is related to the 'look' vs real quality attributes. Most is not though.

In Europe there is more competition within some countries so generic is really top quality in others not as bad as in Oz but not top quality.

Once Aldi had built up its reputation - feedback from suppliers is the 'level' has been dropping and local sourcing has given way to much from China & Indonesia (either directly of indirectly as the other majors are doing).

Much easier and on a lower salary.

Three bedroom semi in Randwick 370sqm land = $82,000 Dec 1986 - two friends dating (18yr & 19 yr old both working) bought it. No it was not in a bad way, they moved in on the Thursday and housewarming on Friday night.

Didn't take long to get a 20% deposit on those amounts anyway.

Now same semi sold for $1.1mn with new kitchen and bathroom only difference. Fast forward to today and 20% deposit = $220,000 - no way 18 yr and 19 yr could (legally have that amount of savings).

Progress.

These days our kids (anyone in 19 - 28 age bracket for example) needs the parents to 'guarantee" or use own/investment properties to get the kids into the market.
We were lucky and made it thru the 18% interest, on 1 wage and a baby in Sydney, petrol money was in the ash-tray, when it ran out - we did not go out.
