No, it's not a joking matter - terrorists like using rubbish bin. If you are eating or drinking something on the platform, put your used wrapper/can etc in your bag and put it in the next bin you see (at your destination).

We did exactly that (in theory) for the Sydney Olympics & after 9/11. In reality, many people dump their rubbish on the train.

A couple of years ago, bins started coming back. Even with the increase in the national security level, so far the bins have stayed.

At turnaround points (especially in the daylight hours), cleaners go through each train.

You are assuming everyone carries a bag.

Don't terrorists like using bins outside railway stations? Or how about shopping centres next to train stations?

It would be much better if people weren't allowed to eat/drink on trains but that's another argument.

I have previously seen clear plastic bins where the contents could be seen by everybody which seems more pragmatic.

You are not allowed where JohnK is, Brisbane public transport specifically prohibits it.

Which is commonly used in the UK. Not all stations have bins, and some areas around stations have no bins though!

At Melbourne CBD stations they had clear see-through bins for some years, until they were all removed earlier this year as a [-]cost cutting[/-] security measure.

No, I'm not. Those that don't just have to suck it up and hold onto their rubbish. Too bad if it's a banana skin. That's the rules...
We are not going to agree.

It makes no sense not to have bins.

Yes, I agree, we're going to have to agree to disagree :D. You must have a different personal safety ethos than me.
No I don't.

Do you remove all bins from shopping centres? CBD? Suburban areas? Where do you draw the line?

Someone with a hell of a lot more knowledge than me makes recommendations to the local councils, state and national authorities. I have a friend in counter terrorism, I'll ask them the question.

Who am I to question their knowledge - nope, I just accept what decision is made and trust that it reduces my risk of being involved in such an incident...

They (allegedly) certainly did for the Hilton but the impact of enough lack of bins would probably end up leading to many more deaths through falls, spread of germs/bacteria etc. Nothing worse than sitting down on someone's used tissues or...

But correctly designed then a bin can be an effective bomb deflection device. If the bin is sufficiently strong enough and designed with an expanding aperture then it turns a 'bomb' into a shaped charge which loses its explosive force into the air directly above.

You've probably seen the videos of bombs being set-off inside a portable device.

True, you would not want to be putting something in the bin at that moment.

I always like to see an optimist.

I think I've mentioned this in another thread but leading up to the Sydney Olympics I was involved in the South/East with planning/security etc. I noted a major security risk and detailed it - including how to counteract the risk. If hole had been used then it would have paralysed Sydney for at least 12-18 months.

AOC said the fix would be permanent so they would not pay for it and then asked a Govt authority to pay for the fix. Never got done - just lucky no 'smart' people spotted the gaping hole. Cost to fix only at most in 100,000+ range at worst.

So when bureaucrats get their snouts into public security then everyone is at risk.

Sydney has followed the lead of the London Underground, and introduced the clear plastic bags for rubbish at major stations with modest sized openings. This was after 3 or 4 years with no bins on stations, and the theory is that anything dodgy will be seen, or too big to drop through the slot.
