Since when? If true that's sad for someone who suffers from chronic pain.

It was announced today and comes into effect June 2016.

It's an interim decision but IMO won't be overturned and will come into effect in June 2016.

This will bring us into line with the US etc.
Those with chronic pain will still be able to access appropriate medications via prescription.
FWIW JohnK there is overwhelming evidence that ongoing opiate use (of which codeine is an example) is of no benefit in non-cancer chronic pain.

Health buffs and medicos: what are the best ways to support a good liver / liver function?

I've been recommended:
  • Drink citrus water (I do half a lemon in a mug of hot water)
  • Ensure 8-12 glasses of water per day
  • More vegetables
  • More fibre
  • Less sugar and fried stuff
  • Less alcohol, though I don't drink much at all
  • More exercise
  • Avoid medication

I know milk thistle is useful for milking the liver, but that's a bit hard to get.

Anyway, although I need to or probably should do all of those, seems just like a generic list...

All of the above are fine. No evidence at all to support citrus water but if you like it drink away.

Milk Thistle and all the other stuff is just total woo, wasting your money even if you could get it.

The concept of "De-toxing" is in medical science terms total b&llocks. Steer well clear of any program, potion or drink purporting to help with this. The only thing de-toxed will be your wallet.

MrP has chronic sinus issues and with all his flying, needs to actively manage it. He gets a script for the original sudafed and was told by the Dr for an acute situation he was having, to take it for four weeks (along with prescribed antibiotics and that was the way the script was written. The pharmacist refused to dispense the second lot as it was too close to the first refill (that lasted a few days). She refused to call the Dr to confirm. It was just very unnecessary and embarassing. This is what can happen when there is a restriction on usage and those people who need it are made to feel they are somehow doing something criminal. And some pharmacists love the power.

Unfortunately there are individuals in every profession who use their power and privileges indiscriminately, the medical profession included. Sadly as a society we must restrict/control access to certain medications as the potential for harm if they are unrestricted is death.

I think alcohol is a much worse and more widely abused poison yet if you consume at home there are no restrictions at all. I could buy a truckload of alcohol and no one could stop that.

Oh I don't disagree with that at all. The whole issue of prohibition is a very interesting one.

I think as a society we should be aiming firmly at harm minimization. The ways to do that are easier and more publicly accepted for some poisons (eg. stimulants used to make illicit amphetamines) and less so for alcohol and tobacco.

What about all those shakes (Optifast, Man Shake etc)?

A news report I saw tonight blamed the recent OD of a couple of South Sydney NRL players for the change.

Apparently cold and flu tablets will be the same. Pain in the butt as there's not usually any need to see a doctor for a cold.

Had a full on DYKWIA "lady" try to push some olds out of the way to get to the Langham Melba restaurant front desk line up for lunch. Later she was arguing with the server staff....loudly.
Just hoping we are not seated next to her at the MCG tomorrow.

On medical matters be totally guided by your medical practitioner. Dr Google can get you into trouble.
Life is NOT a dress rehearsal.

What about all those shakes (Optifast, Man Shake etc)?

They have some value in the short term as part of a weight-reduction plan. If you eat less and replace meals with VLCM then you will lose weight. The long-term benefits are at best doubtful.
Any nutritional claims made by the manufacturers of these drinks need to be approached with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Totally untrue. The consultation process and review has been ongoing for months. The medications taken by those players will already be S8, not affected by the current review as they have the highest restrictions possible.

For those old enough, can you describe the feeling or change in your life when log tables became somewhat obsolete in favour of affordable pocket calculators that could do the same?

Serious question; I'm trying to develop an understanding of how introduced technology affects those who have been used to another method for a long time and may or may not see the benefits of adopting that new technology. I think I was thinking about something like voice assistants, e.g. Siri, Google Now, S Voice, Cortana...

30 years ago the family doctor told me I'm allergic to codeine ... only one way to find that out! Anyway, I've been able to survive the seasons without drama.

I've also got a history of horrendous sinus issues however, since I've seen a chiropractor regularly - I haven't had an issue. Been going fortnightly for 10 years (cost is bugger all thanks to PHI) one of the (many) best things my wife made me do :)

Ohh amaroo, I could say so many things about your post (none of them in favour of chiroquackery) but whatever works for you ;)

Murphys Law suggests - Yes!

Ah. I avoided the log ruler although my older brother had one but your post reminded me of a long buried memory of those log table books.

I know my mothers generation (born 1928) experienced major changes but I reckon they could avoid a lot of the changes imposed on the world. My generation has to embrace them or perish.

hahaha not the first time I've sensed these sentiments  Anyway, the cessation of dose, after dose, after dose, year in, year out of antibiotics - is one the best things that has happened to me!

It's all happy days at this end
