The totally off-topic thread

When I was working at a hospital (up until end of last year) I was amazed how many ladies left the bathroom without washing their hands....

There was a 'anonymous' survey done every few years in Sydney CBD where motion sensor cameras were trained on the sinks (hand level) to monitor hand washing. Dome in half a dozen of the big towers (MLC, Grosvenor, 1 O'Connell etc).

In the very early 2000s it found 34% of men washed their hands, of which about 40% washed them (using soap) and quite well to well (ie semi effectively).

The result for women was 37%, of which 25% (may have been 28% though) washed using soap and quite well to well.

In 2008 the figures were worse:

31% of men washed their hands, of which about 35% washed them (using soap) and quite well to well (ie semi effectively).

The result for women was 28%, of which 23% washed using soap and quite well to well.

Just running water on hands achieves very little.

One of the easiest ways to catch meningitis unfortunately. Someone does not wash hands and samples a grape or something at a fruit stall/shop. You come along and sample one of the same bunch that they held. BINGO.

Also too often cleaners in office towers go from toilet to toilet (mens/womens then next floor) wearing the same glove(s) the whole time. Do wipe around toilet bowls, turn on sink tap and wipe around sink bowl and then walk out (still wearing the gloves) pulling open the doors and then go to the lift buttons for the next floor.

If you work in an office tower - just keep an eye open for it.

So - to minimise cross-infection - NEVER push a button with your finger tip. ALWAYS use the knuckle of you index or 2nd finger.

Most people never use their 2nd finger knuckle for any purpose - so lowest risk of wiping the new found germs on your food, eyes, nose, etc.

Taught all three of our children this approach from before going to kindy. Maybe a coincidence but while their friends seemed to have 4-10 colds/flu or worse a year - our three generally only had 1 cold/flu. Years between throwing up (thank goodness).

Funny (rewarding) today to be out with them now they're late teens and see them automatically push pedestrian crossing buttons/lift buttons with their 2nd finger knuckle.

No luck with room cleaning though!

Some of us don't have that luxury at work. Anyone can come and sit at your desk when you are not there. And the same story using the quiet room.

I bought my laptop, it belongs to me. I also bought my own chair but it doesnt stop others using it.

Because I bought my own laptop and others use my chair? ein confusen.
Because you don't work for someone and you can control what happens in your work environment . ;)

The rest of us have a never ending battle on our hands. Chair adjusting, theft of computer mouse and/or stationery etc.

LOL! Can I blame auto correct?

No, surely not auto-correct!

Freudian slip.

Wishful thinking!

I love my new office. No one touches anything! Its also not the communal printer room which helps...

Well, that theft isn't coming from your pocket - but from the people you work for, which could be people like me?
