The totally off-topic thread

Sister just called and told me she may have fallen for a phish. Email address and password were requested and unwittingly provided. After changing password once, emails / notes were found in the account sent to banks requesting bank balances and SWIFT codes.

Just told her to change the account password and notify all financial services.

F word may have been suppressed...

Hopefully the banks would not repond to an email where they cannoy verify identity

Its quite common these days for people to use everything but hands to push public buttons. Especially on cruise ships due to rota and other virus borne diseases. Hate using hands to open public toilet doors.
If someone is afraid of germs and viruses then wouldn't gloves or tissues be the logical choice? The soles of your feet could have picked up anything and cause grief for the next person.

But as I said it's getting lower and lower.

There's a nasty email going around that virus detectors cant fix but they are working on it. It has a word doc or pdf attachment. Not the usual zip. And infected systems are sending out these emails so even an email from a known person could be risky to open. It is a data miner.

Yeah. Don't usually have a pair of gloves in me back pocket. And don't normally carry tissues. Cruise lines have big buttons you can hit with your elbows. I do dislike public toilets that have doors you have to open after you have washed your hands. The number of people who don't wash their hands after the visit is sickening.

I was saying this to my sister as well. Apparently some emails to the bank were trying to appeal that she was overseas and needed to expect a huge payment fairly soon, and that they needed current account balance and SWIFT code.

To be honest, SWIFT codes are publicly available, so big deal. Current account balance, although perhaps innocuous, needs some degree of verification, and I told my sister that any bank person worth their grain of salt would not reveal any information without verifying identity and almost certainly not over email straight away.

Of course, there are other things, assuming a malicious person having gained access to her mailbox, that could potentially be at risk. That's why I told her to secure herself as much as possible.

... The number of people who don't wash their hands after the visit is sickening.

I am with you 100% one this one. The number of times I see this seems to me to be growing, although my daughters argue it might be part of my grumpy old man syndrome.

As an old joke goes...

...a marine and a sailor are both at the urinals, but after the sailor is done, he goes to leave without washing up. The marine remarks, "You know, in the marines, they teach us to wash our hands." The sailor turns and retorts, "In the navy, they teach us not to p*ss on our hands!"

But I agree with you both. At the very least, run some tap water over to flush off the hands a bit (because sometimes soap isn't always available).

When I was working at a hospital (up until end of last year) I was amazed how many ladies left the bathroom without washing their hands....

Indeed. The only reason I mentioned BKK though was because it was always a special case for ex-BKK tickets. AFAIK it never applied to any other POS globally.
If you are referring to restrictions on QF website then ex-MNL was also an issue. Appears to be all fixed now.

There was one woman at the gym who never washed her hands. Made sure I stayed well clear of her. Maybe its cultural but the bathroom is small and she would see me watching her and just waltz out. Blech.

A few years ago in SA a metwurst company went (deservedly) bankrupt as one child died and many suffered HUS (kidney damage) which was traced back to a worker not washing their hands before returning to the production area.

You should worry about office doors, microwaves, chairs, meeting rooms. Where does it end?

It's not just grumpy old men ... strapping young lads also feel the same  I notice it most commonly at pubs/clubs, with the workplace bathroom a very close second.
