Being dux ain't what it is cracked up to be? Based on my Year 12 results I should have been dux but the awards are given before the results come out. I was never considered intelligent by the powers that be at my school because I wasn't one of the sporty/noisy/articulate ones. I just worked hard and studied.

The dux at my high school was the biggest boy and a fine rugby player.

Interesting. Every school I've ever been at, dux was the highest performing student based on raw scores.

As the results for the final year didn't come out until January, the 'dux' was announced before school broke up in December.

Our was always based on your internal school raw score (only applicable for Year 12 where you get 2 scores in WA, your internal school score and then your TER which is used to assess University applications).

I take great delight that I scored much higher in the Yr 12 exams than the Dux of my school...in fact, he only came 3rd!

I wasn't a sportsman or an athelte. Teachers were fighting to have me in their class. Every teacher that had me expected great things from me. Most teachers in high school were disappointed I did not realise my potential. Our GP during high school was hoping I would get into research as most members of our family have health issues. The people that ended up being lawyers, economists in high school did not have the ability I had. Something went wrong somewhere along the way and I just cannot remember what happened. I passed the HSC without opening a book the whole of Year 12. In fact I missed so many classes I lost count.

I know that may sound like I am blowing my trumpet but far from it. Something went wrong. It would be nice to know what.

There are still a few old dinosaurs that were taught proper Foreigner.

I believe you. Very few of the old school physicians remain in practice though. Some have retired and taken to travelling. Seriously though, I remember cardiologists who would listen to beat with stethoscope on the sole of the foot and also the neck.

Though those practising medicine in the 40s and 50s were the most skilled.Cardiothoracic surgery was decided using a stethoscope and a chest Xray and ECG.No echos, angiograms,CTs etc.
I was privileged when working on the Sunshine Coast to have 2 patients operated on by Frank Mills at RPAH one in 1949,the other 1951.Also another patient operated on by Rowan Nicks in 1956.All had mitral stenosis due to rheumatic fever. All survived into their 90s without any further surgical intervention. Two were still alive when I retired in 2006.
I also had the pleasure of looking after some of Rowan Nicks patients at RPAH as a resident in 1971.Both were true gentlemen whose stories deserve airing-

Pembroke? My school was MLC now Annesley. Intensely disliked it. Pembroke? Loved the school for our son.

Maybe because you didn't have to work to achieve academic success so in the real world that strategy translate?

Company undertakers are in control of Dick Smith Electronics this morning so their gift cards are probably as good as Ansett guest passes and Pan Am lounge entry passes.

Anybody that has DSE gift cards should use them right now before staff are instructed to refuse them (i.e. to use them, literally, right now).

DSE has now gone into voluntary administration

Dick Smith appoints McGrath Nicol as administrator

I almost bought a new computer from them last week. Glad I went somewhere else, considering my old computer failed after just 9 months and I ended up getting a refund from the store where I bought it. I'm guessing that if the same thing happened now with something from DSE, you'd be screwed.
