The totally off-topic thread

This is why I dont like computer medical systems for patient records.
Princess Alexandra Hospital has recently done away with files. My GP has been computerised for ages and he asks me for history.

Not everything is meant to be computerised.

There always needs to be a back up system. One hospital I work at is totally computerised. No back up paper files available. So when the system fails, the referral letter has not made it into the computer etc the day is wasted. There are just too many of those days.

I heard an interesting, and concerning, thing about a computerised medical system on Friday. Thankfully we don't use that particular system.

EPAS?
My brother had to deal with this a few years ago at IMVS. He left eventually. Made predictions about the future. Seeming like they are coming into fruition.

After 45 minutes the Receptionist was able to start processing people again and Drs could finalise their patients. The queue by now was so long it was out the door. Doctors not seeing anyone. I totally understand why computers are helpful but today they showed me how patient treatment can be compromised. In the first instance, the insertion into my 'file' of an urgent referral back in May that has never been acted on, flagged, etc. It was just I was giving this new Doctor a background history of the DVT, anticoags, subsequent cancer checks yada yada and then had to go give a pee sample that she had time to click on a few 'lines' and she asked me about the referral for barium meal. News to me!

And one Doctor spends so much time (not really up to speed on the PC skills) that he rarely looks at me - he is busy clicking away. Yet he still missed the urgent referral.

No something else entirely. Can't really say much more. but a classic example where someone has a disconnect between the real world and setting up a system. I'm sure the IT people who developed the system would agree the issue was a flaw, yet they still programmed in with that flaw. Lack of attention to detail, I suspect.

See I get around the problem of computerised medical records. I haven't been to the doctor for a couple of years and that was only to get some antibiotics for an infection. In my case I don't go looking....
It would be different if I was ill or had any symptoms or similar :)

Very wise Madam. I avoid going at all, hope that things will settle on their own, etc etc. Sometimes that doesn't work out so well, sometimes it does. Sometimes going to the GP sets off a whole train of events that might or might not need to have happened. One thing I have learnt is that sometimes you just know something isn't quite right and maybe you just bite the bullet.

Funny how life has a habit of repeating itself. Same person, different situation or at least on opposite sides of the same situation.

Not quite deja vu but certainly a curve ball. Oh those curve balls.

Agreed, it's knowing when to seek medical advice that is the important thing. And yes, you had no choice in that Dame this time; could have been nasty :(

Our hokey state government. A few days ago our train system triggered a fault and so some Port Adelaide footy supporters were delayed getting to the match before the second quarter. Our train system has been plagued with issues and people have been stuck on trains for hours, diverted with buses, late for work. No real apologies there.

But the state government has decided to give Port Adelaide Club $50,000 in compensation. WT? Port is associated with Food Bank, a great charity hey? But nup. The $50k is being spent on fireworks. Not sure whose decision that was, but it seriously stinks.

And in context of the $ value, several men in SA Health received half the prescribed Chemo dose a couple of years ago. A couple of died and others are just 'waiting'. They were offered $100k each compensation.

This issue is vastly more complex that it appears to the public. While I have no knowledge of those people's situation, it is possible that is a suitable amount of compensation. The emotive arguments will always win, but the reality could possibly be that the lower dose made minimum difference to the outcome.

In any case the Port compensation now sets a precedent for compensation of everyone delayed by train issues. What's a quarter - 15 minutes? Seems like a starting point for a delay deserving compensation.
