The totally off-topic thread

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I remember a newspaper published a couple of fake premiership ladders of the South Australian football competition. This was during the time when Collingwood wasn't winning any premierships even though years ago, well before I was born, they had won lots of premierships. The fake ladder had Collingwood as the winner of the SA ladder claiming this was the only way they could get a premiership. I remember celebrating whenever Port Adelaide won a premiership as this for me was the only black and white premiership I had experienced. If memory serves me correct, 1990 was the first Collingwood premiership I experienced. It was always rumoured that Port Adelaide would join the same football competition as Collingwood. I'm glad it finally happened.

Sad times at ABC in Perth with the report that Eoin Cameron has passed away from a heart attack. He had retired this year after winning ratings competitions many times on his breakfast programme on 720ABC.

Our hokey state government. A few days ago our train system triggered a fault and so some Port Adelaide footy supporters were delayed getting to the match before the second quarter. Our train system has been plagued with issues and people have been stuck on trains for hours, diverted with buses, late for work. No real apologies there.

But the state government has decided to give Port Adelaide Club $50,000 in compensation. WT? Port is associated with Food Bank, a great charity hey? But nup. The $50k is being spent on fireworks. Not sure whose decision that was, but it seriously stinks.

So what if they've decided to give them compensation, hardly hokey at all. Gvoernment's do all sorts of things for all sort of reasons. Really have to wonder about the motivation for whinging about it.

Submitted some work to a journal. sent in corrections for the printing proof, get the published version and they haven't made the corrections. Instead of saying "Table X shows" the text says "(Error! Reference source not found.) shows".

Really happy. Do these people even do proofreading!

I think you should watch the news tonight. I'm sure it is about to snow in the SE suburbs of Melbourne any minute now. I know we cough about the weather here (It seems to catch us by surprise every year!!) However - it's winter, it's Melbourne, it's always going to be cold, wet and windy. But I'm sure I just saw a couple of Emperor penguins scoot past, blown by the Antarctic blast

I'll be driving through the eastern suburbs tonight. I usually don't drive at night and hate driving in the wet but I don't have much choice tonight. At least I'll have heating in the car.

I know governments do all sorts of things but really it's only for one sort of reason - to make sure they get re-elected. The first post in this discussion was that there have been lots of problems with trains and the government has not provided any 'compensation' to those affected. Because this was a football match and some (note, not all) fans were delayed (they made it to the match) the government decided to compensate the football club. That's hokey IMO but YMMV.
Not only that but the club decides to blow the money on a fireworks display. They could have made quite a bit of good publicity out of using it for arguably a better purpose.

Sloppy work that that really annoys me. I can see why you are less than impressed especially as you had made sure to supply the corrections for the proof. I hope you have followed up with an email outlining your disappointment at their poor processes.

From the what the heck were thinking file:

Allan George Matthews, 56, from Glen Innes in the Northern Tablelands, was not a qualified nor registered doctor, police said.

The point remains there are plenty of hokey things in South Australia. But I dare not name them for fear of being falsely accused of talking about specific people again. Still that knob who almost killed me when I was driving to school pick up clearly had the south australia roundabout hokey.
As for a footy club, it is a business. Governments regularly offer compensation to all manner of business when government services fail. For some reason my opinion related to this particular compensation was deleted, but here is a repeat - the compo to Port for the trains is a great precedent for everyone financially hurt by transport failures to demand compensation.
As for the use of the money - the club has a big pot of money - impossible, hokey even, to track how any particular $ is spent.

Finally on hokey - someone has paid my gas bill. In fact the previous gas bill of ~$180 was paid from Australia Post to the value $420, so this bill still has a credit. The thing is I thought I'd paid the last 2 bass bills with a credit card via the phone service. Those payments are not showing. Plus of course I did actually have a debt on the last bill. Now that's hokey.

I did do email. But I am the previous editor[SUP]*[/SUP], so I also have some connections, officially. :(

It's called "poorfreading" these days isn't it?

My view is that the original offer of compensation to the football club was pretty 'hokey' for what occurred - the government wants to keep the club onside perhaps. If it allows others to demand compensation for being stuffed around and inconvenienced by the trains well and good but I can't see that happening. IMO governments handing out money should always be regarded with suspicion.
Your gas bill payment seems very hokey - someone has made an error somewhere perhaps? Chasing it up will be the painful thing.

A red letter day here too.No nothing to do with brexit but I have reached my end of June target-weight less than 100kg.
