It's 06:45am and the pax near me is looking at MyDanMurphys on her phone. Bit early, but she must be one of us surely?

It's quite sad when you find out a friend of yours died, via Facebook. Mysterious circumstances, but you can't really probe as to what happened.

The AA FA was handing out JD for pre take off drinks the other morning - not bad for 5.30am

They were Miami based crew, and the flight was departing LAS - best crew I've had in yonks!

If she'd clicked through cashrewards and paid with an Entertainment Book giftcard-definitely

Learning new words takes me a bit of time.
First we had deplane which when I first heard it on a Delta flight in the US was a bit of a giggle. I thought that one had come from Fantasy Island where the height impaired actor ran around yelling De Plane, De Plane!
Now of course the opposite is enplane which we will all have to start using to its fullest.
OK have you got these words into your vocabulary?

Sorry to hear about this, Flashback. :(

Worse that you can't find out more about how it happened.

Supposed to be working from home today. The USB with all my work stuff has disappeared!
Well I thought it disappeared, actually it's in the TV after showing the family the latest travel pictures. Looks like I can't get out of work that easy.

Sometimes those best mis-laid plans....

Very sad - I had a similar thing happen.

It took months of backchanelling to find out it was a suicide, and the family did their best to keep it quiet. Very sad indeed.

I experienced similar with a school friend. I only found out because my mum saw the death notice in the paper. To this day her facebook page is still active and occasionally people post on it when theyve finally found out what happened.

You can imagine how often this happens, but it doesn't hit you until it happens to you.

If you think of the road toll (alone) - that's close to 1,200 people/year that are wiped out with next to no warning (may survive a day or two but not posting to anything).

Add in those who unfortunately the medical system did not work as supposed - that's another 25,000-40,000 on average per annum.

Add in murders/home invasions/one punch etc.

Really makes me think twice about ensuring all relevant accounts/passwords etc are somewhere in case of unforeseen incident.

Question - for parents with young children (now in the group of later teens ..) - you and partner coming back in car from rare night out for dinner and get taken out permanently by drunk/drugged driver.

  • Have you thought about if this did happen?
  • Who would pick up the pieces and look after your children?
  • Have you asked them if they would (are they physically able to)?
  • Have you made a will to reflect changed circumstances (or ever)?
  • What steps have you put in place?
  • Have you got all your financial & other details put somewhere that they know about?

Unfortunately over the years, with parents that we know well enough (no I don't use this as a conversation starter honestly) not one had considered that scenario until I mentioned in in passing. Often it would be after they remarked about some recent "drunk/drugged driver kills people" story in the media.

Prepare for the worst and you can only get pleasant surprises!

The facebook thing is easily fixed; you contact facebook with proof of death and the move the page over to a memorial page rather than an active page. No password required.

......

Earlier this year, I suddenly realised that a (distant) cousin had not been active on FB when in the past he had posted quite regularly. He had been involved in a lot of family research and so I got to know him and met him on a trip to BNE. Anyway I looked and his FB account seemed to have disappeared so I flicked him an email. Then I did a bit of a Google search and discovered that he had been found dead a month before on his property. It was a real shock - he had had a bad year with the death of his father and a number of other things. I think it just got too much for him to bear. I managed to contact his sister who said they had been shocked as they just didn't see it coming at all.
I was looking for a name in my contacts today and came across his so had to delete it. Quite an empty feeling.

Isn't it wonderful the way businesses try to put a positive spin on things when giving clients bad news? I almost never fly Virgin but had managed a status match a while back which has gradually dropped. Today I received an email:

We have recently reviewed your flying activity over the past 12 months and you have not quite earned enough Status Credits or flown the required number of Eligible Sectors during your review period to maintain Silver membership.

I love the 'not quite earned enough Status Credits'. Actually I earned zero! :)
