The best extra I have on my car is a radar detector which is still ok to have in Perth. Have all 12 points intact and it would save about $2,000 a year. Fines are not tax deductible so the saving is almost $4,000 in pre-tax dollars which is sweet.

Do these pick up fixed cameras and point to point cameras? We seem to have invested heavily in those in SA and they have well and truly earned their purchase. Rarer to see radar here in the city. I have had 12 points for a long time. Which probably means I have jinxed meself now. :o

Yes mine picks out red light cameras and all sorts of fixed and hand held pointed devices. Each of my last 3 Lexus cars has had it fitted and so I just buy them second hand and drive as carefully as I know how. My next car needs a side camera so I can park correctly between those white lines.

Must be the season for it...

I opened some mail on the weekend and have been snapped doing 52km in a 40km zone in the Sydney CBD. Was 50 last time I was on it (a couple of months ago) and I did not even register the change of speed signs. These days you're too busy dodging cars, buses, taxis, pedestrians and cyclists given George St is closed to even notice a speed sign.

Ironically the one and only other speeding infringement I've received in over 20 years of driving was about 8 years ago - caught doing 50 in a 40 zone that had changed the week before and I probably drove that road once a year if I was lucky...I knew the camera was there hence doing dead on 50.

This time - did not even know there was a camera there.

I drive out to work on a 70 kph road but the return road is a 60 kph road. The speed trap is always a downhill hiding spot on the 60 kph road. It would raise as much money as one of your eastern states toll roads.

The old Nokia maps were great for indicating with a beep where red/speed Cameras were positioned. Pity they got rid of them when they rebranded to HERE maps.

Had (successful) surgery a couple of weeks ago and saw the oncologist last week, who explained usual courses of action dependent on result of CT scan of nodes seen in lungs.

Currently on hold until next CT scan , middle of next month. Fingers crossed.

Used the new AArivals lounge at LHR today - nice and modern and plenty of showers. Unfortunately the showers only had 2 settings - hot or really hot. Gets a bit stuffy in the room so would have preferred something a bit more lukewarm!

Food options weren't too bad - a few items on the buffet and then a few items to order off the menu. Bacon butty was good but with the bacon being cooked American crispy style of course.

Certainly hope they disappear for you.
all the best.

Everything crossed for you RodgerK.

I too dread what each blood test reveals. A surprising one for me last week and most likely on blood thinners for life. I had reassured myself thinking it was just going to be for 6 months but the autoantibodies in the blood towards my blood (sort of) put paid to that. Lucky there is xarelto - no monitoring required. Oh well, no more squeezing into economy for long trips anymore - except Jetstar in a few weeks. Must move around - a lot. Clearly my immune system thinks I am an invader.

Well MrP will just have to stump up for the front of the plane all the time now to keep you healthy. Could be worse :)

Just don't cut yourself on anything - you'll be a 'little Aussie bleeder' - literally.

Hope all goes well - it's the waiting that's the thing.

You should see what happens when they take blood. I tell them, watch out, but do you think they listen?

Rather like when I used to take Pushka the cat to the vet for immunisations, I tell the Vets - "She will scratch" - their response "We know how to hold cats properly", I smile, then there is blood. Hilarious actually.

Sadly illegal in most other states. They also mostly use laser speed detectors these days. A member of the AFP has said they are really hard to aim, and if you see one the best action is to change lanes - if possible.

I'm trying to think of the timing for the last speeding fine, 6 to 8 years ago - doing 55 on King William Rd heading towards North Adelaide. The one before that was in 2000 in Whyalla. I drop to 9 points every 6 to 8 years.

If that's a radar it is probably illegal. The beam has to be aligned to be parallel to the road surface. If they are at the bottom of a hill shooting at cars coming down the hill then the beam will be getting reflection from the road surface. That was one of the announcements by Qld police when cleaning up after the moonlight state came out - "We will no longer illegally speed trap cars at the bottom of hills."

That is the one I was talking about. Gotcha!

Good Luck with your trials too Pushka.

But at least payment is voluntary in Perth and Adelaide. I hate toll roads.
