The totally off-topic thread

they know who I am

we know who you are - but what finally got you out of the wine threads ?
Like a Tasmanian exploration company I used to have shares in, the thought that there would be topics not related to wine was very foreign to me so I began to dig deeper. But in contrast to that company whose name escapes me for the time, I have dug up many gems and valuable resources. Broadening my horizons has sent me here where totally off topics are somewhat hard to come by. Censorship hopefully is very minimal here, but I ain't going to paint my face white and attempt to be a Boomer Harvey. Diversity is important in the aff world as is a very good movie. Anyone seen War Dogs as reviews seem to give quite the nod. I also do not read the entire review, but basically the first and last paragraphs if it rates highly. I don't want to spoil it too much should I end up seeing it.
That company was Bass Metals ltd.

Recent establishment perhaps?
Manly - beautiful place. The family had a fantastic week holiday there a few years ago staying on the 6th floor right hand side of the terminal as you ride in on the front strip.
Next time andye we'll go for a stroll down the Corso and have a beer together.

in a way, yes. been here not many times, but I like a bit or irreverent stuff like the card trick.as I was traversing town listening to the news, I hear the plebescite on gay marriage wont get up because the greens will oppose it.and labor has opposed it.I am not a political animal and really have minor interest since don chipp died but are these green politicians, and labor telling me, a voter, that they don't want me to vote on this topic?is this it in its simplest form. they will not allow me, and twenty million other voters like me - scary hey - vote for this issue?am I missing something here? do they want our elected politicians to do it for me and you?as far as aff goes, I have no idea how big it is but I sure as hell learned something today. a chinaman is better than david copperfield. and penn and teller. what a great show that was major, Fool Us by penn and teller.Life can't be too bad when you have time to submit questions like these, as opposed to why the hell am I dying? Not me though !
Regardless of sides, or views. I don't think the issue is giving 20 million people a vote. More that the proposed plebiscite is looking to be a big waste of money, with a large number of politicians saying they wouldn't support the legislation if the public does say yes. Meaning it gets back to a conscience vote in parliament. So why waste $xx_ millions, just do the conscience vote in parliament - that costs nothing extra. The majority public view is pretty much known as well from polling, but there is zero point in asking everyones opinion if they aren't going to implement that view any way.

In other news, I was having random phone conversations with mother the other day. At some point in the discussion of incomprehensible family posts on Facebook mother asks what does "lol" mean?
I replied, "you should google it."
She felt "it is something rude that you write and I just ignore it."
I reiterated that she "should google it".

Could have included the same sex marriage question in the Census. I think the plebiscite is a waste of money. We will have to watch ads that will infuriate us. People are fine with it, it is many politicians on both sides who need to get their act together and do as the electorate charged them to do.

It is a waste of $150 million bucks. Malcolm too scared to make the right decision.

I thought the rising opposition to the plebiscite is to do with the kind of hurtful language that the "NO" camp is likely to use.

Hannah Gadsby, Magda Szubanski and Penny Wong have all recently spoken or written impassioned pieces about how the language is likely to damage young/emergent homosexuals at a very vulnerable time in their lives. Also I'd imagine the debate would be very hurtful to children of same-sex couples as well. Adults have often learned to grow a thicker skin, but it likely wouldn't be a cakewalk even to those secure in their sexual identity.

Reports out of Ireland suggest that even though the popular vote was a YES vote, the debate beforehand was hurtful in the extreme for all LGBTQI.

Then there's the issue of the money and the willingness of MPs to actually follow through with the legislation anyway, even after the money's spent. Why can't they just GOVERN the way we elected them to?

And maybe after that, we can grow up as a nation and get some euthanasia legislation as well.

Yes suze2000. Agree re the No campaign. One can only imagine the arguments put forward. People know what they want but I think only the Yes campaign might move some to change their position. The No campaign will just be very difficult to watch.

I would vote for any Govt that agreed to implement Euthanasia.

You cannot and should not moderate anything from this forum unless it abuses common sense. That is a can of worms in itself.

Suze2000 talks about hurtful language being used. Hurtful to children of same sex couples. I am thinking that this percentage is calculatable but is it significant.

What a nation of softees we have become. What a shame that our elected politicians who have the power don't trust the very folk who put them there.

It's actually laughable.

Regardless of whether people are softies or not. (personally I don't agree, but no point opening that can of worms). We're facing a protracted process to decide the will of the people, that will then be followed by a vote that will not be guided by the will of the people, based on the current indications. Regardless of the reason that is simply a waste of time, a completely pointless exercise in futility. just do the vote in parliament and get it over with - Do the job they're paid to do.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support the right of the population to be polled on such matters. I believe a plebiscite is perfectly reasonable, in principle. But if they're going to ignore it then it is a complete waste of time that only serves to give a false impression that the public has a voice. Then if we go through a campaign that does turn nasty, or not, and we suffer all those advertisements and cough on TV; and in the end the public say Yes or No but the politician say No or Yes. What sort of angst will that create, if they ignore the outcome of the popular vote? In the current situation there is no reason to hold a plebiscite, only pain is on the horizon.

Not anything.

Politics and religion are 2 that come to mind. ;)
Comments on Politics and religion are fine, abuse of other members is not.

FWIW, Last decade a member of this site here was permanently banned because they believed comments contrary to to their personal beliefs should not be placed on public fora - among other things demanding all such content be deleted. They did this so aggressively and constantly they left admin no choice.

Actually IMHO it has nothing to do with money.

It's a lot easier to lobby and/or put pressure on a couple of hundred elected representatives than it is to to lobby the populace.
