Well the news tonight is the fellow who killed the bus driver was sitting on the footpath outside the bus when the police arrived. He is said to be a former QLD rail employee who had been sacked and has a history of mental illness.

The mental illness might well allow him to skip jail, even if that means he's carted off to the crazy house.

Some idiot was joke phoning me at 2am but stupidly didn't turn off their caller ID from their land line.

As I can't sleep now, I'm spending my time signing them up for time-share, insurance, banking ect and charity phone calls.

Because I'm petty.

I'd probably get one signed if I was to get married (not that I'm likely to any way, just not for me). Anyway, having too much fun at the moment to want to settle down!

Because he's a bus driver?

I dunno - according to sentiment going around the traps, bus drivers are just another on the list of people who are part of a service to the public but are regularly abused or assaulted (along with paramedics and others).

Most who abuse or assault are never caught; many who are charged don't get away with much more than a slap on the wrist after an apology, usually lacking in contrition.

This poor driver unfortunately is one of the unlucky ones who was assaulted but won't see another day.

When they find the low life scum who did this, I'd like to know how it would feel if it were doused in a flammable liquid then set alight. I believe such a punishment used to be performed very long time ago on those who were convicted of being wicked or evil.

What's the possible more to the story?

The driver owed someone a debt? He disgraced his family? Is the person he was engaged to have jealous or oppressed relatives or friends that he insulted? His race? Xenophobia? Did he annoy someone in his previous life as a taxi driver? The driver paid someone to kill him in place of attempting suicide? Unlucky victim in an anti-bus driver syndicate? The device was only meant to burn him but not kill him - the latter part was an accident? The accused, wherever they are, is deranged or insane, so they're criminally less liable?

Help me out here....

Let me help. Wait until the investigation progresses and some facts are known. Could be as early as this morning.

If I was my husband, I would have asked him to sign a prenup but he didn't.

I think if you own sizeable assets like a Sydney house outright and/or investments, you should in this age.

But in saying that, who are these 50% of all marriages end up in divorce because I'm nearly 50 and family, friends and work, I can only think of 3 divorces in 20yrs and even then, none of them were family or friends.

But you're not in your 20s or 30s today, where people thrive on the disposable society. Plus can't be bothered putting work into something when it goes wrong!

If a partner drops off the perch it is possible a gold digger may turn up. I think that would be a reason for a prenup for older folks. Then others meet up later in life so that may be a case for a prenup .

You cannot possibly guess that there could be more to the story? The first thing that comes to my mind is these 2 people may know each other and have a history. Drugs? Money? Love triangle?

It wouldn't be the first time would it?

The validity and enforceability of prenups can be contentious in certain jurisdictions. However they are generally a good idea in most cases, especially if one partner is financially substantially better off than the other.

Of course in funny places like Australia, changes to the law mean that de facto relationships essentially carry the same legal position as marriage on numerous issues, including separation and division of assets.

Everyone has assets. The question is whether those assets have any redeemable cash (or market) value. Or social value.

Happy wandering

Fred

My wife is my best asset. Without her everything else I have is worthless anyway.

Unrelated: checking out the National Anzac Centre in Albany today. It really is quite impressive. And the views are good too.

Miss FM asked us about this - people at work had suggested she should get one. We ended up advising her not to. It just doesn't seem a great way to start what should be a lifetime commitment. The boy she is marrying is such a beautiful person, that even if troubles hit and they couldn't work through them and ended up divorcing, I am sure it would be civilised.

Mr FM and I have set up a testamentary trust in our wills which will offer our children some protection anyway. That is if we leave anything - Mr FM and I are having far too much fun spending their inheritance on travel. :)

We set up our wills with that in mind. If one of us dies, half our assets go into a testamentary trust for the kids. That means a gold digger can only get their paws on half. Or if the remaining person goes a bit ga ga and starts handing money to people, at least half is protected. The problem with the gold digger scenario is that they don't have to marry you in order to have rights, just living with you for two years is enough. Taking half the assets totally out of the equation seemed safer. We also trust our kids enough, that if the remaining partner needed income from the money in the testamentary trust, there wouldn't be any issues.
