We actually have flip phones ! OMG .... I know ! Our 7 year old grandson has a better phone than us ! He says " Nana is that your phone ? " I tell him yes, but he says where are your games/photos/stuff ???!!!!

So 2017 we must get into the new millenium and get a smart phone so please recommend a smart phone for a couple of old dummies

Serious decision to make - do you go to the other extreme?

So with grand son you can reprise the 1988 quote, "You call that a smart phone, now this' a smart phone"....

Woolworths (Telstra 4G network) are effectively giving away an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 at the moment for signing up to their discounted from $80 to $60/month for 24 month plan. So you get QFF points thrown in with unlimited Australian talk & text, 300 international minutes (including to international mobile phones luckily) and 8 GB data.

If you want to be really cute you can gift the top-of-the-line smart phone to a relative/friend and purchase one of Wow or C's weekly special smart (but fractionally expensive) phones potentially.

Deal goes until Dec 24 I think.

Worth a thought.

In your carry on - Multiple changes of clothes for him. At least one change of clothes for you (exploding poos, wees, and vomits happen at the worst times).
Dummies, and a dummy strap (no 2 second rule on aeroplane floors). Wraps - you may want to use wraps for your own bedding layer over the infant crib on the planes. Wouldn't worry too much about toys for him at this age.

after this morning's explosive poo incident I have decided to take 4 changes of clothes for him (and maybe a mouthmask or 2)

I saw spotlight had some really soft muslin wraps at great prices. You could throw away as needed and they have so many issues.

wont make it there I think but send SWMBO to target to get an extra pack of wraps, better safe than sorry!

Hopefully, you'll be over prepared for no need. Which is what you want.
Last flight I remember a almost newborn on long or medium haul was in Y, didnt hear a peep out of the bub and yeah, I totally wanted to hold her but thats kinda creepy so I kept to myself but I really wanted to hold her!

that is what I am going for, the pure overkill approach just to make sure, even booked the Rydges at the airport so we don't have the stress of getting to the airport for check-in

Are you flying J or Y?

opted for a J only approach this time, the little guy's flightmemory has 13 upcoming flights for his first year and all in J

At that age, most probably all she'll want to do is nurse and sleep - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you on lots of the later.
Maybe have a shirt that mum can open so baby can get a bit of skin to skin if she/he needs the comfort.

I have told mum to pack a shirt for skin on skin, we are taking one of those mamaway slings so he can curl up on our chest, and it will be easy to take turns in holding him if he is unhappy in the bassinet

I have a baby carrier called a Tula (like a baby bjorn) which is great for transporting little ones around in, although I think your bub may still be a bit small for it. I still use it now and he is nearly 3. It saves having to gate check the stroller.

Woke up to see a for sale sign in front of the neighbours house. Problem is, it's meant to be in front of ours. Bit of a ropey start to the proceedings.
