I just checked in at Sydney and mentioned that it's my birthday. I was handed my boarding pass and printed on it above the line where it mentions QP and Silver are the words BIRTHDAY GIRL.

I feel so special :D

Happy birthday!

Of all places I'm most impressed it came from SYD. Looks like they can print almost anything in that Service Information area.

Thanks! The one thing I really want is a present to unwrap. No one has given me one yet :(

The lounge naz_ didn't comment when I came in but here's hoping it's noticed when I board.

Well, that was an eventful morning. Looks like the neighbours in our apartment block upstairs called the Police after the all-mighty row the English couple next door were having.

I do feel sorry for their two young daughters, who high tailed it out of the apartment to get away from what was going on. Would have gone down to check they're alright but don't know them well enough.

Happy Birthday. At least the message is a lot better than "Catering not assured" ;)

I really didn't know they could do that ... perhaps Qantas should do it more often for people.

Happy Birthday! Did you get a new cake for your avatar?

The word of the day is emboss. Why? Two things happened to me today.

First, I got a message from Amex last year that I was offered a preapproved cobranded Amex Plat card, with an extra 10k MR points if I applied in December. Although I didn't meet Amex's strict criteria on paper, I sent in the form anyway.

Didn't hear from them, so today I called them up and they told me that I was actually just approved. The card is coming in the mail and should arrive next week; today it was actually being embossed.

Got one letter when I got back from work - from QFF. Since I've requalified as WP for another year, they've sent me a new WP card. As we all know, the new WP cards are not embossed unlike the previous incarnations. It doesn't look as "exclusive", but it is somewhat easier to read the name and number fields from a distance. It came in a cute paper wallet with a brochure "to remind you of the current Platinum privileges and your oneworld Emerald membership privileges." Some notable things from the booklet that confirm some airy fairy stuff:
  • Your Platinum privileges with Qantas said:
Access to dedicated First class check-in lounges
Complete check-in formalities in private and secluded suites when travelling from Sydney or Melbourne international terminals
Private? Only in MEL. Secluded? Again MEL, but not really if you walked through the terminal just to get into a marble box. (Only feels good if you drive up and get dropped off just outside the Qantas door). SYD does have a F check-in, but private and secluded? I don't think so. (Qantas could do a lot better for it's supposedly premier international gateway.)
  • Your Platinum privileges with Qantas said:
    Priority baggage
Your bags are tagged Business on domestic flights where applicable and First on international flights where applicable regardless of your class of travel
They seemed to have cleared up that WPs definitely get J tags on domestic routes. It isn't very clear in other places that I've read it (it just says you get priority; here it seems to make a difference that as a WP you will get J tags vs. SG/PS/QP you will get orange Priority tags).
  • Your Platinum privileges with Qantas said:
    Priority Economy purchase
If you're already holding a paid, Economy Qantas ticket, a priority Economy seat is available for you and a guest on any Qantas international or Australian domestic service
So let me get this straight. In order for me to buy a priority ticket for me and/or for one other guest, I need to be holding a ticket already? What the hell sense does this make?
  • Access to Qantas Lounges and oneworld airline lounges said:
Business Lounge at selected Australian domestic terminals
    • Access lounge when your next onward flight that day has a Qantas, Jetstar or British Airways flight number
    • Guest Privileges: up to 2 guests
Firstly, I think many of us have already found that we can access the domestic J Lounges without needing to fly, and still take our two guests.
Secondly, what if you fly on an American Airlines codeshare on a Qantas operated domestic flight? Are you out of luck? :-| Surely not....
  • Access to Qantas Lounges and oneworld airline lounges said:
    Qantas First Lounge
    • Access lounge when your next onward flight that day has a Qantas or Jetstar flight number or oneworld member airline marketed and operated flight
    • Guest Privileges: 1 guest travelling with you
This is interesting; one of the confusing things we've encountered on this board is that WPs booked on the QF codeshare of a FJ operated flight can't access the F Lounge. Or rather, they've had mixed success, but we've argued for a while that the strict rules say that if it isn't operated by oneworld or JQ then no access.
If you read that access clause carefully, it implies that as long as you are on a QF or JQ marketed flight, the metal doesn't matter - you will have access to the F Lounge. The "Qantas" and "Jetstar" in that clause have superscripts which when one turns to the back, reads:
    superscript #14 said:
This includes QF or JQ marketed flights. Marketed means that there must be a QF or JQ flight number on your ticket
So if you have a QF flight number on your boarding pass, you could be flying on FJ aircraft to NAN, an EY aircraft to AUH or OZ aircraft to ICN, but you can access the lounge. That would explain why there are non-QF, non-JQ and non-oneworld flights in the departures board in the lounge (except for MH to KUL - what's the deal with that....).

You’ll have to show off your new card at drinks next week!

I’ll try not to forget your other membership pack that I have sitting here ;)

Happy Birthday!!

Hopefully when you board there’s an upgrade for you too ;)

Thank you for the lovely birthday wishes everyone!

Unfortunately J was full but I did score 23D in this mini-cabin which had only 2 rows. The crew gave me a bottle of bubbly from the front with my dinner. Then when they were doing a water run I was asked if I was the birthday girl and I was quickly given another bottle cheers!

You will be happy to know I did get to unwrap a present on my arrival :D Then ended up at the casino betting on 31.......
