The totally off-topic thread

I am increasing and still play my collection of vinyl.

I don't have a CD/DVD player in my house. Or a radio. Which is somewhat ironic. Even my Xbox is dead, so can't play anything on that. My laptop has no CD drive. And while my car has a CD drive, it's easier to just plug in the ipod. Which I now also rarely use.

Life comes at you fast.

I think there was a point in time recently when LPs, for some reason, were making some sort of comeback. Either they were a kind of old culture or retro chic, or people really liked the whole turntable thing, or maybe the baby boomers were realising that they needed devices to help preserve some memories (similar to film scanners).

Needless to say, the turntable equipment, even in the mass consumer stores, is not cheap.

Imagine some time in the future if cassette tape players make a minor come back. Dare I mention video cassettes?

LPs have never really died, a lot of people think that the sound is still better from an analogue source than from a digital one, bit like people that prefer valve amps to transitor amps and even those that prefer to use electromagnetic speakers like Quad's famous ESLs over cones. If you want to be very esoteric(?) talk to hi-fi nut about speaker cables...... Multi strand, solid cable, $20,000 for 3 metres?

As for cassette tapes, you must have missed this! http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonev...alk-about-the-cassette-comeback/#1c4824471723

I personally don't think I can tell much of a difference, but some (a lot!) out there have way better hearing than me. Bit like people that can pick a wine from the vineyard that the grapes were grown it. I know they can do it, but I certainly can't :).

Or even those that say the taste of coffee is better after the beans have been through the intestines of a cat, don't reckon in a blind taste I could tell the difference..

Sorry, way off topic.

I have a nice '78 Linn Sondek LP 12 with grace tone arm and MC cartridge superfluous to current requirements if anyone's interested!

I doubt you would have any problems selling it, it would be a nice upgrade to my revolver, but I hardly use it anymore.

quote 'Hi-Fi Choice reviewers voted the LP12 "the most important hi-fi component ever sold in the UK" and The Absolute Sound ranked it the second most significant turntable of all time in 2011."

We have an aircon in each of the bedrooms (except for the smallest one), but no where else in the house.

It doesn't really get silly hot - particularly downstairs - as it does humid. Fans help a lot in the latter case.....................

When we built our house 25 years ago - we could have either a pool or fully ducted AC. I went with the AC ! We live 500 metres from the beach - so we often have a cooling sea breeze ! We also have ceiling fans in our bedroom and the family room. January is the worst month for humidity - that is when our AC is on the most.

No aircon in our house; we don't own the house so don't really have a choice. 1950s weatherboard. It resists the heat for a while then once it gets hot, its stifling. The only option is to open doors and windows overnight to hopefully cool it down, and have fans running in the lounge, kitchen and bedroom

Did I read correctly that the house will be going on the market in the not too distance future? Or have a good that totally a* about? (which is quite likely) :)

I may have to try this. Not so much for betting purposes, but just to finally see how many books I have. Not sure I will make 1861, but confidently more than 1000.
I have recently finished not only counting, but putting all the fiction books into an excel SS (title and author). The magic number was 1467. This does not include children's picture books, audio books, e-books, cook books, or Mr FM's considerable number of military and history books. As part of the exercise I was quite ruthless in getting rid of books to St Vinnies....

and here she is ! I am 5'6" and she only comes up to my shoulder !!

I still have the turntable my parents bought in the 70s. It works a treat and I can't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon. It is a bit tricky finding an amp/receiver that has a phono input when I update that every few years.

Record number of people in selfie?
...

Nah, seen more, though it depends on your criteria of "in a selfie". If it counts as long as your whole face is in the photo, that's not a record number attempt there.

Given that they have a selfie stick and simply not the old school holding the camera in a long arm, they should certainly be able to do a much larger attempt than that.

No AC here either. Double brick house that doesn't get any direct sun except to the laundry and bathroom. But like the weatherboard example, after a couple of days of hot temps, it holds its heat and becomes stifling.

Best I can hope for is getting a breeze through by having front and back doors open. And wind the Dyson fan up.

AC is not common in NZ - in homes or cars. Moved here 14 years ago in late May and bought a car within a week or so - no AC in it (little Dahiatsu Charade). Quickly learnt my lesson come November!
