And running out of assets to sell.

I'm upping the travel now as I really don't know how much longer I can safely travel overseas. Life has a way of tripping you up sometimes.

I remember one flight and there was a NZ couple, struggling with their bags, looking exhausted ect.

Making polite conversation as hubby helped them with their overhead luggage ect (the husband looked like he had a stroke/mobility issues), they said this was their "Trip of a lifetime" and were on their way home and she was miserable. She was tired, just wanted to "go home to my garden", hated the travelling, hated having to do a stop over in SIN. Over it.

I still think to myself, how sad that youve slogged it out for a lifetime and you finally have that trip youve always wanted (in J) and hated it because your body is tired.

I had to talk mum out of ending her trip early last year; the cost to bring her flight forward would have been the same cost again that she had already paid (ie multiple thousands of dollars). I'm not sure she actually enjoys it that much but it seems to be something she thinks she "should do".

Keeping up with the Jones's...

Even myself and hubby, I learnt last US trip that we pushed ourselves too hard and got very sick by the time we got home, the sickest either of us have ever been.

So now I plan rest days/afternoon nanna naps in our schedule. All day touring followed by a late morning and/or rest day/something small to do nearby. Last US trip, we exhausted ourselves by going from sunrise to sunset, literally as hubby was out taking photos.

You can make regular payments instead of that awful lump sum. As long as there is some savings to pay the gap between pension and the payment. The homes don't like that as they want the lump sum upfront which means that for us, it should be avoided.
True but I am not sure how much the family has investigated this. I think it is something that we push to the back, hoping we don't have to make a decision. There is also the issue of there being a vacancy when she needs it. Limited choices in a country town though she does know people in surrounding areas. The town has 3 levels - the lodge (Level 1 - independent), the home (assisted care), and the house (full nursing home). I know my grandmother only spent about a month in her nursing home as there had been no vacancies and she was on the waiting list. Not a lot of upsides in being very old sometimes.

MrLtL is at pains to tell me we need to make sure there is enough money for me to live well for another 30+ years, based on my mother's age.

My husband has this spreadsheet, listing assets, cash and his expected life span.. into his 90s (dad in law recently died at 94).

The spreadsheet is huge, takes up a wall - I think he printed it on a CAD printer

In our family, I think I am the one with the longevity genes. MrLtL's family now consists of a sister only. I don't think he is expecting to make a big age either.
