It will be strange as this has been your home for many years and the one you grew up in. (I think :))

Yep, lived here almost my entire house. Its the house my mum bought after my parents separated....back then it wasnt the suburb it is now. It was the cheapest place she could find, and now its a multimillion dollar suburb. I was made fun of at school for living "in the country" and now we cant even afford to live here.

So your mum sold the house from underneath you? I thought parents were supposed to leave it to children!

It's a good thing. As much as I'm sad, at least we can start making plans now.

Certainty is much better than doubt even when it involves change.

Speaking of which, our first dinner tonight in our (leased) Melbourne apartment.

My luggage over the last three trips has consisted of blankets, sheets, towels, saucepans and today the copper bowls, cutlery and even some clothes! Plus a shopping trolley. Ok these items are available here of course but without a car it's easier to bring them here by plane then taxi.

It's complicated things though as MrP has to make sure he has all his work stuff potentially in 2 places and I have to keep two stocks of household items as we can't eat out every night. Today I also brought over 5 frozen meals

Dunno where else to put this but might be of interest. Arrived MEL a few days ago and had goods to declare so didn't use the express card for customs. Was made to walk all the way around to the other end of the hall where the regular queue started and there was a border agent sorting pax... you then had to walk between the barrier ropes all the way back across the hall to another 'sorter' who directed you straight out or to customs/secondary. The second sorter was just after the express path entry.

So... even if you have goods to declare you can use the express path entry and go from there to customs/secondary if necessary. Saves a bunch of walking and waiting in the queue.

I *thought* the card says you can't use the express lane if you have goods to declare... but the new set up and long walk makes the cards valuable again whatever your circumstances.

Age of entitlement is not for every child. In 2017 I get to hear how many older parents are not doing so well financially in retirement.

If you save one whole salary each year between the two of you then it means buying a place is possible. Many DINKS can do this if they figure it out early in their lives.
So far the highest fee paid to go into assisted living has been $900,000 in WA and many financial planners have never considered this requirement possibility.

Yes, my mother is comfortably off living in her own home but if she needs to go into the Lodge she would need to sell up to make the fee.

You can make regular payments instead of that awful lump sum. As long as there is some savings to pay the gap between pension and the payment. The homes don't like that as they want the lump sum upfront which means that for us, it should be avoided.

Mine decided to retire before retirement age and without the funds to support her new desire to travel everywhere in paid J...

Sounds great that she will be able to keep on doing this and is young enough to enjoy traveling.

Yes, its wonderful. But there has to be enough money to last another 30+ years so its a little concerning when a person runs out after 2.

My husband is 56 and Im 48, we agree that we're travelling now as much as we can so in a couple of years, we can be happy enough to say home/local travel and still be able to afford day to day living and not be screwed.

Not for long if she keeps spending this way, she'll have a couple years before being destitute

And running out of assets to sell.

I'm upping the travel now as I really don't know how much longer I can safely travel overseas. Life has a way of tripping you up sometimes.
