On your birthday, does anyone expect anything special when they're out and about, or travelling?

I know that friends of my sister basically take the day off on their birthday and go around to various restaurants or ice cream places and the like, because they often have a policy of free or discounted stuff on your birthday. Some of this isn't written down or advertised; sometimes it's about who you know.

I know that sometimes if you stay somewhere and they look up your profile, you might expect a small surprise on your birthday (bottle of wine, a small cake, etc.). I've never flown on the day of my birthday (and it isn't happening this year - I'm working on the day of my birthday and can't get out of it), but some people get small surprises on board when they do so.

Having travelled yesterday I can say it was zip, zilch, nada - although I don't have any status with DL but 5k miles + $5.60 was too good to pass up for SFO-SEA-YYJ (compared to ~$250+ for a one way ticket on Alaska or AA codeshare on Alaska).

In previous years I've found there's been no recognition on airlines and sometimes the odd comment at check-in at hotels. Anyway, it's just another day.

Our little one has hand foot and mouth. Very common ailment for small children and not that big an issue, except she won't sleep. So we can't sleep. Wife is currently driving her around in an effort to keep her down.

It's not fun.

Uggh. I hope she gets better soon!

For birthday planning, this year will be spent in Tasmania, in August. My plan is to sit by a fire, drinking hot chocolate. Husbands plan might involved local Whisky (Whiskey?) testing and photography.

My Amex went on a little shopping spree yesterday to the tune of 400GBP...got the alert on my phone so called Amex straight away. Card cancelled, new one on its way, and the card is already updated in Apple Pay. Can't complain about that, though I'm guessing I dont get to keep the points

I am guessing that it wasn't you doing the shopping. If you ever do we find the topcashback site to be helpful.

Indeed it was not. Not currently in need of $600+ dollars worth of cleaning services in a different country

It really depends if:
a) They know
b) They care
c) You or someone makes a big deal of it.

I was fortunate enough to be comped me a bottle of Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne by a 5 star hotel last night, so I felt obliged to assist in its evaporation.

However, there have been numerous times flying, or at hotels where I have got nothing.

EDIT: I should add that I am a frequent guest at this property, so would be one if its higher revenue guests.

I think I need an intervention. Just ordered custom luggage tags and more packing cells.

On the plus side, ordered via Velcoity/Etsy so I get 4 points per dollar.

i'm flying Friday week, one day after my birthday, meanwhile, I'm wearing my new 'Che' t-shirt, got my Mao cap on and we're off to give a talk on 'socialism and it's place in current day Australia' with some of my comrades at a meeting of the Luang Prabang youth wing.

I am sure there is a few of your friends that would love to join you. Jump over to the housing thread or NBN thread and you can have your pick of them :)

said very much as a joke and not to be taken literally, nor seriously.
ditto... well sort of :)

I'll send this one off to the grammar thread. :)

That's what comes of fighting with a spacebar :(

I have to explain that my original post was a little dig at someone, as in another thread I was told I was an ínner city socialist :)

No harm, hate or angst intended, it's all just good fun, I hope.

(I actually live in the 'burbs.......) :)
