I'm sure the mother knew from the way we broached the subject. We just did not say it directly: "Hey your baby is Rh+ that means your partner is not the father". Ethically no dilemma as mother and baby got correct treatment and we had no treating relationship with partner. As far as we were concerned he was just a visitor.
That would be a ticking time-bomb in that relationship. Even if the partner doesn't know/understand the implications of Rh+/-, it'll only take a change of doctors or even a throwaway comment at work or social environment to unravel the deceit. Or child has accident, needs blood transfusion, both partners are present and ER person mentions "Rh+". I suppose as long as the partner is the father of any subsequent child, Rh sensitisation won't be a problem, will it?
